Please critique my latest HR 1207 flier
I was messing around last night on the computer and this the rough draft I came up with. Explanation of purpose below, and feedback welcomed!
In our busy, super rushed world, people don't have much time to read. This flier is the equivalent of a sound bite. It catches their attention with something familiar. The FedRes is a play on the FedEx logo, and the now well known quote "The Federal Reserve is about as Federal as Federal Express. I think Eustace Mullins said it first, then it was picked up on by Ed Griffin, and I heard Kucinich say it somewhere. It is catchy and effective, and most people don't know it, and are shocked when they hear it. It catches their attention.
I envision this not only as a flier, but as a postcard. You can get a stack of 500 postcards printed online for super cheap - $25 or so. Upload the image, and a week later, you get a stack of post cards in the mail. This is the beauty of being digital. Then you can send these to your representatives in Congress. Shower them with them. Have postcard writing campaigns. Letters are one thing, but visual images are another, especially if they get a bunch of them.
So, what do you think? Feedback encouraged. I'll probably do a couple of variations, based on the feedback.

Looks great! Now let's get it into every lawmaker's office.
The bill is in committee with the House Financial Services, where Ron Paul is a member. Only 71 members on the committee. I've noticed other members of the committee have also signed on as co-sponsors, which is great. The push will now be to squash the bill in the committee, like most are. You can bet there will be a tremendous effort to do this. Lot's of arm twisting from all over the Government spectrum. But this is a great start. People are starting to really question our monetary policy. Even the mainstreet economic novice is starting to smell a rat. And that rat is the Federal Reserve! With these flyers, we can turn up the heat with all Congress people, hopefully, to the point where we can "shame" them into supporting Ron Paul's bill. I hope someone with a keen parlimentarian procedure knowledge will keep us posted on the movement of the bill, because there will be several attempts to "assasinate" the bill in committee.

"Alaney," note ad is largely work of ART; best art is something CONCRETE--a PERCEPTION, not fuzzy abstraction, which people looking on can all agree upon without doubting, and upon which they can then think as they please. Present ad is LOST in abstraction and in-distinctness, hazy, blurry, and fuzzy for necessary definiteness--CONCRETENESS, again.
People absolutely need to face un-deniable fact: Fed is COUNTERFEITING--that's all it is and does, PERIOD. Present Fed criminals (which they know very well they are) and bribed/extorted/terrorized politicians/accomplices will do all they can to distract and divert the people. Even Ron Paul lets himself too easily get lost in fuzzy abstraction.
Politicians must fear the people, and we presently only have TRUTH for weapon--which truth we must keep as PERCEPTION not negotiable for abstraction and quibbling.
Pressure must come fm people, BOTTOM-UP: THERE'S NO OTHER WAY. We're on brink of a bolshevik dictatorship where folks can't even GROW THEIR OWN FOOD on their own property. "Hate"-speech squelching of truth and dissent, disarming of victim citizens, and legalization of foreign invaders are presently being pushed in our very faces, even as we speak.
CONCLUSION: So we must see this ad art as simply a political offensive WHICH MUST NOT BE WASTED for effort and resources. So don't dissemble and mis-lead the volk with false optimism and cheap compliments. Ad should and must achieve distinct CONCRETENESS or else it's gross failure--again--in platitude and abstraction. I disagree with "cultivator"; for an ad is mostly a work of art, in our case for purpose of INFORMATION, and thus the art of this ad is seriously DEFECTIVE--why?--because nature of topic subject, Fed, is left hazy, blurry, a mere indistinct abstraction for what it truly is in CONCRETE REALITY--a COUNTERFEIT scam/operation/mechanism, again.
Fed must be destroyed; yes, it should be audited. But it's no different fm looking at a cancer growing on a friends face--we all know it needs to be removed and destroyed if possible--but we'll first say, "go see a doctor," like now we say Fed should be "audited."
CONCLUSION: Primary purpose of ad (and art) is to ESTABLISH the un-deniable PERCEPTION and CONCRETE REALITY of the problem: Fed is COUNTERFEIT operation which must be abolished, no less than cancer must be removed. Honest elections and death to the Fed. Apollonian

I find now I've gotten caught up in all this most excellent political activity begun by Mike Nystrom on this most interesting Fed subject. Having emphasized CONCRETENESS for the people's general knowledge, I find there's good reason for interest just in that subject alone--concreteness.
For the question arises and won't go away--WHAT is the Fed, in actual fact? Note all the mystery attached--as there must be for any fraud--its real nature has to be HIDDEN. For many people already know: it isn't "Federal" and there are no "reserves." Thus the very mystery to it HIDES it's real nature.
For the Fed is a scam, by essence and fundamental nature. So what is the Fed exactly?--IT'S A COUNTERFEITING racket, scam, operation, mechanism--and there's simply no other way to put it without hiding the truth and resorting to mystery and mumbo-jumbo which only works to confuse and deceive the people.
And verily the truth is so often a difficult thing. People will want to avoid that truth, not willing to acknowledge they've been fooled. But soon enough knowing and facing the truth will be necessary JUST TO SAVE OUR LIVES, seriously.
CONCLUSION: That's why we should be concrete for our definitions, avoiding needless abstractions when we can. The Fed is really a noxious thing--a COUNTERFETING operation, pure and simple, and the sooner people face this dread truth, the better off they'll be. Honest elections and death to the Fed. A rewrite
Here is a first draft of a rewrite. The villain is secrecy. There is a subtle appeal to people's fury about the misdirection of "bailout" funds that's currently raging.
What is

doing with our money?
The Federal Reserve System (the "Fed") creates and controls our money. The Fed has created trillions of dollars for the "stimulus" and "bailout" programs. Who got that money?
The Fed is not subject to the Freedom of Information Act.
The Fed has never been audited. Do you think that is right?

I like the first sentence: "Villain is secrecy"--but "bailout" topic then is distraction.
Next, the best question is, What is the Fed?" pure and simple--it COUNTERFEITS the money, as I note (see earlier and later Apollonian notes). Fed is a fraud by its very nature and essence--this is the dirty little secret which people are so reluctant to face and grasp.
CONCLUSION: But otherwise I like the brevity and directness of this essay; the last few sentences are quite compelling. Keep up ur great work. Honest elections and death to the Fed. Apollonian
Re-write it then.
Keep in mind that mixing "Fed bad" with "Fed secrecy bad" dilutes the message and will distract or divert many who do not yet know how evil the Fed is in concept from writing to their congress critter about Fed secrecy.

Okay "Jive," I'll accept ur challenge. Easiest thing then for me would be to leave it (ad) basically like it is (as shown, above), but with only modification regarding the first line under the big "FedRes": Where it says, "The Fed: A private global banking cartel," I'd merely append a question mark (?) at the end.
Then I'd add under that (above-mentioned) line: "But WHAT is the Fed REALLY?--Answer: it's actually just a legalized COUNTERFEITING operation/mechanism which inexorably works to inflate the money supply, debasing value of money, defrauding the people. Counterfeiting (only "legalized" for a favored few oligarchs)--that's literally what Fed does."
Then I'd only add a reference: "Check RealityZone.com for expo/ref., also see G. Edward Griffin's "The Creature From Jekyll Island." These, foregoing, would be only thing I'd add, leaving the rest as it is.
The absolutely fatal problem at present moment is Fed is not understood for the CONCRETE entity/thing it really is, left as just a hazy, blurry abstraction--which NO ONE can understand in common with other good people and citizens. This absolute, indisputable, concrete existence is what must be established so that minds of citizens can come together.
CONCLUSION: Again: Fed is a sheer COUNTERFEITING scam--that's the truth which we must establish as a PERCEPTION, NOT as fuzzy abstraction in minds of fellow citizens. Probably better to say "More mysterious than the CIA"--for we know what CIA is and does--what about mysterious Fed? People don't even know what it really is--or does.
"Cause of what crisis"?--"inflation"?--true, but then how so?--answer is Fed is COUNTERFEITING scam/operation/racket.
"Spending...," this is fairly true--but then Fed just COUNTERFEITS the money, rendering what money already exists to be less and less valuable, defrauding the people. Fed really is a gross fraud operation--and this is what people need to understand in some basic detail.

The first line
Only the first line, "More secret than the CIA" is on topic. ("Secretive" might be better.)
If the object were to get someone to come to a debate about whether the Fed ought to exist, or who caused the financial crisis, the other lines might be in order. But the goal is to get them to contact their representative about the bill. The flier ought to avoid any confrontational assertions and stick with the "sunshine" theme.
Who and what?
Think about who the audience is and what you want them to do.
The audience is anyone of voting age.
What you want them to do is to contact their representative in favor of the resolution. Everything should be directed at that.
The object is not to convince the reader that the Fed is private. It is not even to convince them that it is evil. We want people who think the Fed is necessary and good to join the call for an audit.
Tailor the flier to appeal even to the politically naive, to Keynesians, to Democrats, Neo-cons, Cramericans - everyone. Emphasize the Fed's secrecy. End with an assignment: Contact your congressman.
The classic book, How to Win Friends and Influence People spells out how to motivate people to do what you want. It applies as much to fliers as to letter, essays, and oral arguments.
Added later: It occurs to me that I probably broke most of Carnegie's rules in doing my pitch to change the theme from "Fed bad" to "Fed secretive." I seldom think about the "influence people" part when I am dealing with friends.

Right now the Fed has announced it will directly buy Treasury bonds, as I understand fm Peter Schiff, which means we're headed for HYPER-inflation. So it's good for people to understand who and what is and will be responsible for this horrific catastrophic disaster.

Audit the Fed, not FedRes
I would strongly suggest striking the Federal Express theme.
The first words at the top present an arguable assertion that the reader will question. That's a no-no. You want to inform, not distract the reader with questions in his mind. Notice how the master hypnotist Obama (or his speech writer) always begins with obvious and unimpeachable facts. That is not by accident. Besides, even if the Fed were not federal, it would not matter. The theme ought to be secrecy, not "federalness." Secrecy is why we need an audit.
The assertion that the Fed is private has the same problem as the allusion to Federal Express. It can put the reader in an argumentative or disbelieving mind-set, and it is off topic. The reader will either question it, or just toss the flier away muttering, "I know that's not true." Just stick to unquestionable facts.
It may be that the FedRes logo is what gave you the idea in the first place. Nevertheless, it needs to go. It echos the comparison with Federal Express, and the reader will wonder what FedRes is. They have never heard of FedRes. They have heard of the Fed though.
There's a saying among writers: "Kill your children!" It means, if something does not work, remove it ruthlessly, even if you love it, even if it is the very thing that inspired the work to begin with.
Good Critique, BUT....
The fed being private is a major "hook" or "eye grabber". The target audience assumes the Federal Reserve is part of government. The revelation of it being private creates more questioning; the most you can expect out of a flier, which is a one sheet of paper sound bite.

Besides, I think the target audience happens to be right. The Fed is essentially a fourth branch of government that is not subject to general election, or to any of the checks and balances or scrutiny that the three legal ones are supposed to be subject to.
Assertions about the general evilness of the Fed are counter-productive in a flier whose purpose is to call for an audit. For this purpose, secrecy is the villain, not the Fed.
Once an audit is done, it will be much easier to expose the Fed for what it is.

Logically, preceding any "audit" for Fed, we want to consider WHAT in specific terms Fed really is. For it's demonstrably not "Federal" (part of gov.), and it has no "reserves," etc. So it's legitimate thing to bring up that subject as to what Fed is, premise then for any subsequent auditing.
Note serious, honest people understand there's something "rotten in Denmark." If u don't know already there's corruption in gov., how serious can u really be about things?

I love it
As a graphic designer I would experiment with another color for the small text under the FedRes perhaps alternating them. Also, nothing says you can't use the colors like that, they are different words. I have no idea what the FedEx colors are, if asked would have said black or blue and orange.
Also I would kern the bottom line out to read more clearly like this:

I REALLY like it, but I sure would hate for there to be any trouble w/copyright infringement. What if you simply reverse the colors for FedRes?

I'm watching the Sheppard Fairey trials, which is interesting because he's THE HOTTEST artist.. And he's certainly making whatever money he will need to sustain any AP... suit, which...Ap shpuld reconsider, as Shap is gaining POWER as an image man.
I also am reading how corporations are going to schools for art instead of paying an in house artist. Copyright is a hot topic, and it's all risk.. Your poster made me think of all the ingenius tee shirts that spun off corporate logos.. "Cocaine" spelled like Cocacola, and so on... so I wonder if someone had a patent for that... Seems corporations love to sue people, knowing it's a slam dunk.
