What book should I recommend to my friend who wants to know about U.S. history?

I could not put these down after I started them. I then purchased them by volume and handed them out to people I knew.

5000 Year Leap, hands down. I don't agree with starting them out on all the "conspiracy theory" stuff although I think your friend eventually should get there, but the 5000 Yr Leap is an easy read, dead on and will explain what and why our Founders secured for us. It looks at 5000 years of tyrannical governments.

This is going to sound strange, but you know when a single girl meets a married man/committed boyfriend who is the real deal, a great catch.... She'll say something like, man do you have a brother? She wants something she has neve had. That is this book, it introduces you to a system that you can see for yourself no longer exists, without anyone shoving it down your throat. It was like a liberty romance novel for me...

In the years following independence, a close business relationship had developed between the cotton growing aristocracy in the South and the cotton manufacturers in England. The European Bankers had decided that this business connection was America's Achilles Heel, the door through which the young American Republic could be successfully attacked and overcome.

The 'Illustrated University History', 1878, p. 504, tells us that the southern states swarmed with British agents. These conspired with local politicians to work against the best interests of the United States. Their carefully sown and nurtured propaganda developed into open rebellion and resulted in the secession of South Carolina on December 29, 1860. Within weeks another six states jointed the conspiracy against the union, and broke away to form the Confederate States of America, with Jefferson Davis as President.

Very easy, but good reads, that give a decent history of the events that have shaped the world in which we are now living...Published in 1971 and 1987 respectively (I think), when read today, they tell a chilling tale. Much of what the author discusses has come to fruition since published...
