The Federal Reserve, enlightening an individual
I was talking to my roommate and giving him the lowdown on the Federal Reserve. He is a business major and has been told the regular.
I told him the Fed is privately owned by member banks who, as members, are required to invest a percent of their capital in the fed each year and get guaranteed returns and they are not allowed to buy, sell, or trade their stocks of the Fed (off the website). Then I proceeded to show him the New York Fed Board (off the NY Fed site) and how all the Board members of the NY Fed were CEOs, etc of member banks. I also showed him the Dallas Fed Board (Dallas Fed site) where the same situation is true.
Herein lies the conflict of interest. Am I correct in assuming the State boards report to and advise the appointees of the national board? The CEOs of member banks will work in their own best interest and they have been given a stunningly EASY way to manipulate the system. Why if I fail, I'll just get the fed to give me some money!
Also, These member banks typically finance political campaigns so the politicians they push into office are obligated to return the favor. So not only do the member banks have influence over the national fed board, they have influence over the politicians who the fed board reports too and who make the laws.
He did find this disturbing and will ask his economics teacher tomorrow about this.
Also, he just learned today that inflation is good and I told him inflation is good for a debt economy which he made a fuss about then read an article that reinforced my statement. He said that credit is good and I said it is like heroin and we are addicted. Because we went off the gold standard, inflation was allowed to rise quickly leading to lower savings rates then forcing increased loans thereby enabling a positive feedback loop with credit from our banks... our addiction.
I told him debt was control but at this point he wasn't listening anymore...

Area of expertise is biggest blind spot
As business major, he "knows" he is right, he has all those hours invested in gaining expertise. Try to get an MD to take colloidal silver seriously. Or an attorney to consider the possibility that the Constitution is suspended under emergency war powers.
Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.
very good point!

They just cannot imagine that the FED is
1. Illegal and the constitution does not provide for its existence.
2. Fraudulent and equivalent to counterfeiting.
3. Is foundation for all the greed and corruption.
The most simple concept in the world, fractional reserve banking, is something that otherwise highly intelligent people just cannot fathom or choose to remain ignorant. Slavery and debt forever until this system is dismantled. Until people realize that as soon as this system is abolished and taxes eliminated, and that the amount of real capital and wealth will explode, we will live at a much lower standard of living than we could.

Yes
Yes, the only reason this system has lasted as long as it has is because of the surplus in energy that technology has provided us. We are losing those surpluses fast and our technology hasn't grown to compensate.

The Road to Serfdom
Hayek's book is the best thing going. It convinced me. It is so incredibly logical.

HAH! He has also said he
HAH! He has also said he doesn't believe in reading (books that is... they are a waste of time)
---------------------------------------------
Quick! Look over there!
Unfortunately, his lack of interest in reading books has become
too common; much too common. Internet or not, books are still the primary means by which previous generations are able to share their accumulated knowledge, experience, successes, failures, hopes, dreams and generally to communicate with subsequent generations of people. The internet is a helpful medium for distributing them and even publishing works that conventional publishers might not touch. If he does not believe in reading books, if he thinks that their reading is a waste of his time, then I'm not sure that you'll ever be able to bring him across, so to speak. If he doesn't believe in reading books, then it leaves me wondering exactly how he could expect to graduate from any school.....with any genuine degree of education. That assumes that he either did graduate or is attempting to graduate.

Then, there's no hope
if that is true. He is a sheep waiting to be led to slaughter. "I will just believe what my Economics Professor tells me, duh."

Ron Paul's Convention Speech
No, he has seriously said that.
I told him I was going to write an article about the fed for my school paper and he said, "why do that if it's not required?"

So he's there to pay his money, put in his time and get a
piece of paper that, presumably, will be used in marketing himself to some prospective employer?
