DailyPaul Convention — Calling a Strategy Session — WHAT DO WE DO?

0 votes

Reading a recent post warning DPers against being lulled into the sweet sounding message of Fox, Beck, et al., and offering suggestions concerning how effectively to implement our agenda, I again realized the extent to which the DP has become dominate by ancillary messages (many of which I find interesting and informative).

The point is this: I'm a little afraid that the momentum may be slipping away from US. Instead of actively organizing and pursuing a grassroots, bottom-up renovation of our political system, are we receding back into the comfort of arm-chairing? If you are all still frequenting the Daily Paul, a website dedicated to a presidential candidate nearly a year after his bid failed, it's because you have made it your mission to some extent. That, to me, is the real danger of the Glenn Beck phenomenon: that we begin to allow him to fight our battle for us, only to become despondent when he fails or falls short.

WHAT DO WE DO?

If anyone responds to this post at all, I'd love to have some suggestions, to engender a "strategy" room that would serve to foment, direct, inspire action on our part.

A few general ideas:

1) Education - Without disseminating the truth and winning new converts or activating the latent believers, we cannot reach the critical mass of people required to change the system.

- Media - working on the development of our own liberty media (has been considered and even attempted, but effectively?)

- Schooling - Formulating ways in which to reclaim our youth's education and to counteract the stultifying indoctrination into state-dependency

- Rhetoric - While a delicate subject by nature, given its proximity to propaganda, we need to think seriously about how people are won over.

Hint: it isn't by sheer force of reason alone. If this is couched in an aggressive or inimical tone, it serves only to foster resentment and fortify the objections of our interlocutor. Since we're humans, and all have egos (plenty of those on this sight), conversions must be won by seduction almost. This doesn't imply a vitiation of our message, doesn't require us to sacrifice our principles, only to employ a more congenial, Socratic method of bringing others to understand them. We know our philosophy is right, and the reasoning compelling, so we need to consider ways to circumvent the defensive posturing that inevitably ensues when people feel like they're being attacked. In short, be KIND.

2) Political organization - I have received a lot of encouragement from those reports posted here about the successful efforts to take over local Republican political organizations. It seems to me that efforts to elect a presidential, or even congressional candidate are desperate if not entirely futile without the establishment first of such a base of support.

- Local organizing - the necessary first step.

- Galvanizing, inspiring, directing, and marshaling the support. We need those generals among you who will get on the horn and keep the troops from flagging (sorry for the mixed metaphor).

What do you all think?

WHAT DO WE DO? HOW DO WE TURN THIS NODE OF CONTEMPLATION INTO A HUB OF ACTION? HOW DO WE MAKE THIS GO VIRAL?

You Are The Leader We Need

Yes, YOU!

What can you do? Really! Think about it . . .

What are your resources? Make a list. Headings might include Skills, Knowledge, Contacts, Tools & Equipment and any other category that makes sense.

The Task At Hand
How can you apply those resources to the task at hand? What task is that? Understanding the political hierarchy and timeline so we can propel proper candidates into office at all levels.

Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?
Who are you? What lights your (political) fire? What makes you get up, go out and spread the word? Where do you do that? When do you do that? Why do you do that? How do you do that?

Here are my suggestions:

Who are you? I don’t mean your name; that’s your identity. I mean, at your core, who do you think you are? What type of person are you? Do you love people, prefer the hermit lifestyle, or something in between? Do you communicate best verbally or in writing? If you don’t know, figure it out. Now.

What lights your (political) fire? What inspires you to take action? In this case, I mean what has to happen to you, personally, that you will take deliberate action to make a phone call, email, fax, write a letter, or speak in person to another person who may not be familiar with your goal? Do you need Ron Paul to come to your house and speak with you? Do you need to see a video of him? Is there someone else who inspires you to take action? If you don’t know, figure it out. Now.

Where do you commune with like-minded people? If you are isolated, where do you go to encourage others to join you? Do you strike up a conversation with people in line at a bank or grocery store? Do you chat with clerks? Do you belong to a club or association? Do you attend events with your children (school plays, sporting events)? Do you attend events (P.T.A.) on behalf of your children? Do you chat with your doctor, dentist, or other medical staff? Do you attend fundraising events for a favorite charity? Make a list of your activities and think about how you interact with people.

When do you commune with others? On special days of the week when you attend religious services? When you take your kids to sporting events and talk with other parents? When you go to dinner with friends? When you go to business meetings? When you travel on common carriers (planes, trains, boats)? When you are mowing the lawn or gardening, and speak to a neighbor? Make notes. Mark your calendar so you are prepared to speak about news pertinent to your goal.

Why do you perform these various activities? Probably because you enjoy being with like-minded people; people who hold the same religious beliefs, people who enjoy watching their kids play sports, people who enjoy hearing about your life and telling you about their lives while sharing a meal, people who have common business interests, people who attend the same community meetings, people who are traveling to the same place you are, people who live in your neighborhood, your extended family. Family. Neighborhood. Community. How far does your reach extend? Write down names and make notes about past conversations and known common interests; be prepared.

How do you go about broaching the subject of politics without marring the natural flow of conversation? Think about it. How would YOU like to have someone else present their personally-held political views? Probably in a way you could relate to the circumstance without feeling irked and becoming aware that you are actually talking politics. Be kind yet focused.

In short: educate yourself on all aspects of your goal, be as patient as necessary to win over someone’s mind, and learn to recognize—and overcome—objections.

If not you, then who?

Take action now!

I would like to see someone

I would like to see someone start a phone jam on tv talk shows. if they wont educate them we can. call up with a qoute about the federal reserve documentation is a must. alex jones told his audience to do that on hannity and it worked great. we shut him down on his own show! the air waves go two ways. I would volunteer to do it myself but i havent hardly watched tv for something like 5 years. I dont even think about what's on t.v. tonite.
If hannity cut you off id remind him that he is supposed to be broadcasting "in the publics interest" and you being part of the public deserve to have your opinions heard. criticism of the u.n. for example has not been heard. If we are going to wake up the older people its not going to be by the internet. They may start to remember things like the word free enterprise and other concepts that they have not thought about for 50 years because those ideas have been banned on t.v. They could be our greatest asset because they may remember thier parents talking about the stinkin u.n.,tariffs secret police etc. They dont have to be taught. Believe me they remember what this country was and are probably the angrier than anyone. What if we had 3,000 retired bored crotchety people who could make phone calls to the senators?

What I want

I would LOVE to see a movement in my county. I am between Charlotte-Asheville-and the Greenville/Spartanburg SC areas...
I have been speaking to strangers in line when I go out. The latest thing I have been telling them is to support HR 1207, and to please call everyone in state government demanding they stand behind the bill. I tell the ones I speak to, that if the bill passes, it could be the first step in not only saving more money in their pay checks, but helping to save the country they love.
I have spoken to, and gotten at least 20 Vets in my area to listen to, and see the truth. Now they are all against Obama and they all agree..they want to see the birth certificate. (All I ask them was: Would you go back into a war and risk your life for a president who refuses to prove hes a true American? Then why do you support Obama?...That did it)

Freedom is another way to God...A corrupt government is a straight way to hell.

I believe in Hope & Change..I Hope the government will Change
Spindale-Rutherford County-North Carolina

What we are doing...

Much of what we are doing is focusing on educating people locally. There is a decent size group that has galvanized over the last 6 months. Many of whom have been activists for a long time. This is some of what we are doing:

1) Remaining active in Campaign for Liberty. Precinct leaders, District leaders,etc..Participating in regular C4L meetings. Canvassing our precincts with C4L and similar literature. Recruiting new members.

2) Organizing the Philly End the Fed rally 04-25-09...March down Market Street, rally at the Federal Reserve, culminating with an indoor assembly at the National Constitution Center. We have an excellent line-up of guest speakers, including Michael Badnarik. http://educationalrevolution.wordpress.com/2009/03/11/end-th...

3) Providing a venue to host Michael Badnarik's April 26th "Constitution Class" in Philadelphia.

4)Using our primary meetup groups "Campaign for Liberty" & "Philly Truth and Freedom" as a vehicle to network with other area meetup groups in the freedom movement. Our target groups to interact with are other C4L meetups, JBS, Antiwar, and of course the fastest growing group of conservative minded people, GB's 9-12 project members.

5) Remaining active, or stepping up activity in local party politics (all parties). Running for local office, and supporting other liberty minded candidates in the region, county, state, and federal levels, seeking committee level seats.

6) As futile as it seems, still contacting state and federal legislators on a daily or weekly basis on upcoming legislation, impending votes, or providing feedback on their recent or overall voting record.

7) Public outreaches similar to this one at a recent gun show in Valley Forge, PA http://www.campaignforliberty.com/blog.php?view=13288

8) Blogging, posting videos, handing out slim-jim fliers everywhere you go (keep a stack in your car or the inside pocket of your favorite jacket.)
http://www.youtube.com/user/robpatozz

Our objective is simple. We are on a mission to educate and invite as many people into the freedom movement as humanly possible. I personally believe that supporters of GB's 9-12 project are one of the best target groups to receive the message of individual liberty, and learning the truth..We know, that we will go nowhere without ACTIVISTS. If you really care about freedom do something.

Here's my list that I'd like to see

1) Focused Fundraising-People "vote with their dollars" for area targets
2) Resistance Networks-forming coalitions with all different groups
3) Legislative List-The acts that need to be repealed, stopped or helped
4) Candidate Catalog-A list of the people running at all levels of government
5) PAC training-how to form and maintain a Political Action Committee
6) EZ precinct leader program-a survey and checkup program to get a base

Just heard today...

that we are giving even MORE money to Mexico and money to rebuild Gaza that the zionist destroyed, when we, ourselves are bankrupt. What the hell is going on?

Thank you thank you Gabriel,

for this great post, and for starting a thread with many excellent responses.
Your lines, "conversions must be won by seduction almost...In short, BE KIND," is advice worth gold to this movement.

Great post!

I'm reading all the suggestions and I'm impressed both by their number and their variety. Makes me feel a LOT more optimistic...

One small suggestion, which I think someone else made a while back: could we have a place to check for legislation we should be concerned about? I am new here and haven't posted much content, and the first thing I posted had to do with internet legislation of WiFi...I thought this was important stuff, but got no comments and was soon buried in obscurity. If we had one place to post this sort of thing I think we could be a lot more effective in fighting unjust legislation.

I guess I'm also really excited because tonight I just got my first email from my precinct leader in C4L and hope I really can be of some use...

I personally use every schmooze opportunity to....

turn a conversation with a stranger into a way to talk about the economy, not the weather! Once I do that, I try to gauge the level of dissatisfaction the person has with current events, then I go in for the "kill" and bring the conversation around to the fact that the only one that would have been able to steer this country in the proper direction was ridiculed out of the debates and possibly prevented from winning the election, and that he - Ron Paul - really does now have bragging rights! (No doubt, unless they are living under a rock - they have probably seen some of the "face time" that Ron Paul has had in the past months even on the major media, so they would probably know who you are talking about!)

Look for excuses to talk to people wherever you come in contact with them - at the supermarket, at the mall, at the gas station....anywhere you can have the chance to talk small talk with someone.

Once you get the conversation started and you are successful in steering it in the right direction, you have given another citizen something to think about. Multiply that by all the people who have supported Ron Paul's message out there and there will be nobody left who hasn't heard of Ron Paul and that we must reinvigorate our Constitution by getting involved in the process.

I think that there are a lot more people willing to listen now....because they are scared and they are beginning to see that they have been lied to.

"Bad men cannot make good citizens. It is when a people forget God that tyrants forge their chains. A vitiated state of morals, a corrupted public conscience, is incompatible with freedom."

One thing we can continue to do

is support our candidates for 2010 RJ Harris,Debra Medina and Rand Paul maybe its time for a Daily Paul moneybomb.

Learn From Barry

Whenever and wherever I post this it seems to get a big yawn. Either I am crazy or few seem to understand. The way we spread our messages is on the street, in person, away from our computers. With all of Barry's tech savy, what is he doing now? Recruiting his supporters to go door to door selling his message! He gets it.
There is a power in face to face contact which the computer will never attain. A subliminal message of importance is delivered.
This is not to say electronic communication is not a valuable tool, but it is that; a tool, which can do only so much. It is a tool which our enemies can and will control to our disadvantage. If we experience a societal collapse, roving blackouts are likely, rendering this tool useless. We need to develop our non-tech skills and communication networks.
Many people who can be or are on our side do not have computer access. The reasoins for selling our messages face to face go on and on. These are just a few.

Vote for Liberty...Buy Silver Eagles.

eye to eye is the only way

I hold the position that I won in the GOP, but I do not waste one minute on politics. I talk eye to eye with my neighbors.

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

Well I was hesitant to go on the offensive over Beck ....but

Almost everyone is now in agreement that Glenn Beck is OVER.

There are a lot of great ideas -- the further we go down the page here.

We need to develop a Consumers Constitution and a Voters Constitution; (1st)!!!

We must know what we are "standing for."

We then need to develop group stickiness (2nd) -- In these trying times our Liberty Mind Militias (10 - 15 strong -- small - organized - no infiltrations) should focus on Passive Incomes, a Barter System, Entrepreneurialism, Homeschooling, Private and Secret Gardens, Precincting, Contacts in the Black and Red Markets, DVD Parties, DVD Door to Doors, Slim Jims, et al).

We want to develop Liberty Cells -- that are functional when the leader dies or quits. I've trained Navy Seals in Defensive Tactics and Conscious-Sleep exercises and we've discussed the tactics and sustainability of terrorist cells. Their networks are ingenious and are 100% non-reliant on technology.

Here's our Covenant: 1) Vote-out-the-Incumbent (this would increase lobbying costs by 2000% -- 535 people to bribe rather than focusing primarily on the Senior Politician), 2) Vote-out-the-Corporatist (Consumer Union - no purchases from welfaring seekers), and 3) Vote-out-the-Unionist (Consumer Union - no product made by union hands).

Why do we know this would work?

Corporatist Revenue Stream: 1) Consumers-who-Purchase, 2) Consumers-who-Invest, and 3) Consumer-who-Abdicate to Gov't (Gov't Subsidizes Inefficiency and then they Abdicate to The Fed)

We are 3/3 of the problem and solution.

Let's write a Consumers Constitution (CC) and a Voters Constitution (VC)

CC -- "We the individual consumer will buy products and services from corporations (by industry) who engage in the least lobbying; from workers who are part of no union; and who help to keep the educational system innovative - entrepreneurial - and privatized. We the individual consumer will buy local producers and services when possible -- we will buy organic food exclusively or sincerely try to -- lastly we will never abdicate consumptive dollars to corporatists who seek to usurp consumer demand as their sole voice of business solvency."

VC -- "We the inividual voter will never elect an incumbent; we will ONLY elect an invidual who will first pledge to NEVER issue one new tax, revise an old tax, continue an old tax, doll out regulatory advantages, nor vote to spend beyond tax revenue. Politicians will rise without party affiliation - no voter will elect a politician who even hints at affiliation -- there must always be 100% competition and Zero Cronyism between the candidates -- otherwise collusion and monopoly of ideas may occur."

My question--Food for Thought:

Why do we waste time squabbling over these media talking heads? What do we have--Stockholm Syndrome? The US news media is a complete joke.

Why not create our own news media on the Internet?

Great idea Kevin..

I have been thinking of starting
just that.
Here's my credentials....
http://www.swbvideo.com/tv_video_production.html

it's certainly doable.

Create an outlet that other sites link to, for a common sense approach to news.
there are tons of unemployed Newspaper workers, wondering what they can do, itching to write. Not all of them are extreme left wingers, or right wingers.
Before they were let go, they were told what to write. Many would jump at the chance to write their own minds, instead of someone else's agenda.

If we tried hard enough we might even be able to locate a cartoonist! hehe..

And one other request Kevin:
Please do a cartoon, in a movie poster theme, captioned "raiders of my last buck".....purty please?

Gabriel,

Both you and Kohmar make good points: we need to do SOMETHING, and we’re WAAAY behind. The long-term, purposeful mis-education of children actually goes back to the early 1800s and beyond, as John Taylor Gatto (former NY State and NY City "teacher of the year) points out in detail.

To your point: Consider educating yourself about organizational techniques employed by non-profit entities that successfully perform fundraising on a vast scale, without government assistance. Some organizations to look at include St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN; The Orange County Performing Arts Center in Orange County, CA; National Public Radio; any nationally-known religious organization; and, sadly, Obama’s Presidential Campaign. They all use a hierarchical structure that funnels the funds up to the top level.

Consider the patience exhibited by these groups as they move through time; setting goals, communicating those goals to a wide variety of individuals, performing fundraising activities, comparing results to goals, making adjustments in tactics, reaping rewards, repeating the process. Why, they almost look and feel like they are modeled after corporations!

The difference is: the non-profits are working with disparate individuals who voluntarily come to them because they are attracted to their cause and are only bound by a common desire to achieve the organization’s goal. There are no employment contracts, no stock options, no paychecks (except possibly at the very top of the administration)—only recognition in the form of photographs and column inches in news publications and on websites, adulation at community events, and occasional token mementos; essentially, free-market voluntaryism: trading skills, time and influence for that wonderful feeling of satisfaction that makes one beam with pride when a job’s well-done.

This is all about creating social capital; encouraging people to like and respect you so that when you express a political opinion they at least consider your viewpoint and, hopefully, decide to join you. Picking apart arguments and other fault-finding activities are for petulant inside-the-box thinkers and control freaks. Expansive, outside-the-box thinking works to include everyone; individuals are free to walk away if they are unwilling or unable to fully commit to your cause. You might check out Joel Spolsky’s Smart & Gets Things Done and Eric Chester’s Getting Them To Give A Damn for fresh ideas on motivating people.

As for getting the public excited enough about a return to liberty, consider the following commentary (including an excerpt from my husband’s recent article):

The biggest reason people are not responding in huge numbers to the message of liberty is that the message has become damaged, and is thus no longer as attractive as it might be. The Founders and much of the American public of the 1700s and 1800s were, by and large, classical liberals – which is to say, they understood the connection between love and freedom; between compassion and liberty. Love and freedom are a duality, and neither works well without the other. Would a politically-free society peopled by sociopaths remain free for long? No, because the widespread sense of brotherhood and connection with others is the lubricant and anti-corrosive for the market, and for social interaction generally. (This—the high level of neurosis in early America, not to mention institutionalized slavery and genocide against the Indians—is one of several reasons the nation has slowly degraded into the tyranny it is now).

Conversely, would a compassionate society run (or even simply funded) by government coercion remain a warm and healthy place or long? Of course not. Every Communist nation is a blatant, screaming example, and even the more enlightened European socialist nations, such as Sweden, are degenerating into outright tyranny while also seeing their wealth constantly erode.

A modern version of classical liberalism—a version that specifically asserts the need for love as well as for freedom, while acknowledging both that love cannot be imposed by force and that even funding programs aimed at "compassion" with coercively-obtained tax money corrupts them (e.g., Child Protective Services, the FDA, the USDA, and—well, just about every nice-idea government agency you can think of).

Really: how do you command someone to love? Coercion harms and eventually destroys love, so how can you use coercion, defensively or otherwise, to make someone love you or to show compassion to others? You can't. While love and compassion must be widely supported and explicitly acknowledged as human needs, in order to effectively foster that love (or compassion or universal brotherhood or whatever you prefer to call it) the support must be voluntary. Otherwise, you end up destroying love and the foundations for love in the long term.

I repeat that support for compassionate behavior and for a compassionate viewpoint must be explicit (i.e., spoken of in direct, unambiguous language), frequently voiced, widespread in the culture, and effective enough to create and sustain reasonable levels of individual and societal health, but none of that requires government edicts or laws, and indeed none of it can long survive the levels of coercion involved in large, intrusive governments.

As a practical matter, the young in particular must be treated with respect and compassion because early experience creates later character and guides later behavior. The foundation for a compassionate sense of connection with others is developed early in life or not at all.

Voluntaryism (a.k.a., "civil society") is the necessary framework for all this – for both compassion and freedom. Coercion is the polar opposite of freedom. Coercion is the enemy and corruptor of love.

My husband writes often on these topics; for more detail, see his website and his archive at Strike The Root.

That was an excellent post.

That was an excellent post. Thank you so much for sharing that.

This is the kind of strategy and philosophy we need: no more bickering, manipulating, or analyzing celebrity figures -- just a reminder of the basic principles we need to live by. We need to be reminded of what liberty and love really mean and seek to live that philosophy out in our daily lives.

BILLBOARDS

I've stated on numerous occassions but I think BillBoards on Major Freeways in metropolises are a very, very good way to spread the message of freedom. I think it was Mike Lawson that stated he ran a business putting big decals on cars/trucks which is another method of advertising our message.

I think having moneybombs for Billboards and setting up a *meetup group* specifically for discussing what our billboard messages should be would be a great idea. I'm not sure if that can be done on the Campaign for Liberty site or even the Daily Paul, hence the meetup group suggestion.

At any rate, that's what I have been thinking. I would be able to do some of the art for them and having it centralized would allow us to get m ore than just one creative mind working on the various messages.

Billboards are an excellent way to grow the movement.

A few thngs to remember:
1. It's a printed sound bite. Keep it a single thought with a website reference.
2. Determine your target audience as narrowly as possible, and custom the message to that audience. This may become several different messages depending upon the location of the board.
3. Think big. You will need substantial resources in order to make a national buy, which will leverage best prices and locations.
4. Repeat #1. Keep the message SIMPLE. Never crowd the board.

Vote for Liberty...Buy Silver Eagles.

You can start a group on

You can start a group on http://community.paulslist.us for this. You can discuss things there and brainstorm, put up some polls, solidify some ideas in a wiki (maybe post how other people can go about putting ads up on billboards near them, etc). This is one of the many things the site was built for.
