The Great Thanksgiving Hoax

by Richard J. Marbury

Each year at this time school children all over America are taught the official Thanksgiving story, and newspapers, radio, TV, and magazines devote vast amounts of time and space to it. It is all very colorful and fascinating.

It is also very deceiving. This official story is nothing like what really happened. It is a fairy tale, a whitewashed and sanitized collection of half-truths, which divert attention away from Thanksgiving's real meaning.

The official story has the pilgrims boarding the Mayflower, coming to America and establishing the Plymouth colony in the winter of 1620-21. This first winter is hard, and half the colonists die. But the survivors are hard-working and tenacious, and they learn new farming techniques from the Indians. The harvest of 1621 is bountiful.

The Pilgrims hold a celebration, and give thanks to God. They are grateful for the wonderful new abundant land He has given them.

The official story then has the Pilgrims living more or less happily ever after, each year repeating the first Thanksgiving. Other early colonies also have hard times at first, but they soon prosper and adopt the annual tradition of giving thanks for this prosperous new land called America.

The problem with this official story is that the harvest of 1621 was not bountiful, nor were the colonists hard-working or tenacious. 1621 was a famine year and many of the colonists were lazy thieves.

In his History of Plymouth Plantation, the governor of the colony, William Bradford, reported that the colonists went hungry for years, because they refused to work in the fields. They preferred instead to steal food. He says the colony was riddled with "corruption," and with "confusion and discontent." The crops were small because "much was stolen both by night and day, before it became scarce eatable."

In the harvest feasts of 1621 and 1622, "all had their hungry bellies filled," but only briefly. The prevailing condition during those years was not the abundance the official story claims; it was famine and death. The first "Thanksgiving" was not so much a celebration as it was the last meal of condemned men.

But in subsequent years something changes. The harvest of 1623 was different. Suddenly, "instead of famine now God gave them plenty," Bradford wrote, "and the face of things was changed, to the rejoicing of the hearts of many, for which they blessed God." Thereafter, he wrote, "any general want or famine hath not been amongst them since to this day." In fact, in 1624, so much food was produced that the colonists were able to begin exporting corn.

What happened?

After the poor harvest of 1622, writes Bradford, "they began to think how they might raise as much corn as they could, and obtain a better crop." They began to question their form of economic organization.

This had required that "all profits & benefits that are got by trade, working, fishing, or any other means" were to be placed in the common stock of the colony, and that, "all such persons as are of this colony, are to have their meat, drink, apparel, and all provisions out of the common stock." A person was to put into the common stock all he could, and take out only what he needed.

This "from each according to his ability, to each according to his need" was an early form of socialism, and it is why the Pilgrims were starving. Bradford writes that "young men that are most able and fit for labor and service" complained about being forced to "spend their time and strength to work for other men's wives and children."

Also, "the strong, or man of parts, had no more in division of victuals and clothes, than he that was weak." So the young and strong refused to work, and the total amount of food produced was never adequate.

To rectify this situation, in 1623 Bradford abolished socialism. He gave each household a parcel of land and told them they could keep what they produced, or trade it away as they saw fit. In other words, he replaced socialism with a free market, and that was the end of famines.

Many early groups of colonists set up socialist states, all with the same terrible results. At Jamestown, established in 1607, out of every shipload of settlers that arrived, less than half would survive their first 12 months in America. Most of the work was being done by only one-fifth of the men, the other four-fifths choosing to be parasites. In the winter of 1609-10, called "The Starving Time," the population fell from 500 to 60.

Then the Jamestown colony was converted to a free market, and the results were every bit as dramatic as those at Plymouth. In 1614, Colony Secretary Ralph Hamor wrote that after the switch there was "plenty of food, which every man by his own industry may easily and doth procure." He said that when the socialist system had prevailed, "we reaped not so much corn from the labors of thirty men as three men have done for themselves now."

Before these free markets were established, the colonists had nothing for which to be thankful. They were in the same situation as Ethiopians are today, and for the same reasons. But after free markets were established, the resulting abundance was so dramatic that the annual Thanksgiving celebrations became common throughout the colonies, and in 1863, Thanksgiving became a national holiday.

Thus the real reason for Thanksgiving, deleted from the official story, is: Socialism does not work; the one and only source of abundance is free markets, and we thank God we live in a country where we can have them.

Richard Maybury

As a homeschooling mom I have found the Uncle Eric series,
which begins with the book "Whatever Happened to Penny
Candy," by Richard J. Maybury to be invaluable in educating
myself about economics and government, and I plan to use the
whole series with my children when the time comes. I give full
credit to Richard Maybury and Dr. Mercola, through their
websites, for introducing me to Ron Paul, and I am now 100%
behind Ron Paul for President.

The Uncle Eric books gave me the knowledge necessary to
understand nearly all of the ideas Dr. Paul is talking about,
including his references to Austrian economics, yet they
are surprisingly easy to read and are recommended for using
with students in 6th grade and up!

It is not property...

that undermines the idea of free markets but greed and usury. And this is what we have to fight against!

The Author's name

Hi,

I thought I would mention that I believe you have the author's name wrong on this piece. You should be crediting Richard J. Maybury.

I strongly recommend your readers learn more about Mr Maybury as he publishes a financial newsletter: U.S. & World Early Warning Report that is extremely insightful. His web site is www.chaostan.com . He is also the author of a series of books with an umbrella title of "Uncle Eric's Model of How theWorld Works". These books are very easy to read and give you a very clear non-statist view of the economy, history and politics. They can be purchased through Bluestocking Press at www.bluestockingpress.com. These books are a MUST READ.

The entire article, author

The entire article, author and all, was taken directly from Dr. Mercola's site. You may be correct that the name is misspelled, but I don't know.

You know

Rush Limbaugh has been telling this story for about ten years on the wed. before Thanksgiving. Good to have the original reference.
I'm not a big Rush guy, but I heard this from him long ago, and when he puts out things like this it almost makes the crap he spouts worth it.

Good post.

An early version of

An early version of Distributism?

Liberty = Humanitarian

At a rally in Cheyenne, Wyoming on Oct 28 Ron Paul said:

"If you care about people, if you have any humanitarian instincts, and you want to make sure the maximum number of people have the maximum amount of prosperity, you have to vote for liberty."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qO7hmNpSA34

"If we lose our prosperity, and it's going down now...believe it or not...If we lost our prosperity but we had our liberties, we would be back on our feet in no time, and we would be prosperous."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=07LUTjYJto4&feature=related

That turkey is not cooked

Too symplistic to be true:

What happens when you have the maximum amount of property (prosperity) in the minimum number of hands? What happens when those few with the maximum prosperity decide to take the last bit of liberty and the last bit of property for themselves? The laissez-faire capitalism in the stile of the Chicago School leads right to where we are now in America. And it will go hard on our liberties because unfettered and concentrated capital very quickly becomes anti-liberty. It is true that communism does not work but you are inviting tyranny in though the back door.

So

Fettered

Laissez-faire economics is what Ron Paul (and I) believe in precisely because free exchange by two consenting parties is the hallmark of a society that features individual liberty. 'Fettered' capitalism is what we have today, in which total government expenditure is 44.9% of GDP. Are you saying that number should stay the same, rise, or drop slightly? That is the concentrated capital that Ron Paul Republicans are fightng against.

The first 5 million supporters of Dr. Paul are 'early adopters.' The next 10 million will require a modified approach.

I agree the current system is rotten to the core but...

I do not believe that there is any such thing as a true laissez-faire economy or if there was it would last a couple of minutes.

While it may work in small human communities, on an international scale in a hugely complex global marketplace there are serious, proven problems. Big capital inherently tends toward monopoly and monopoly crushes competition. Monopolies also crush democracy. This is what the “Chicago Boys” brought to the world with devastating results for the LIBERTY of millions of individuals around the world. Not much free enterprise in Iraq these days by the way. Iraq was a NeoCon’s laissez-faire pipedream…. But you will say it wasn't laissez-faire at all and it was corrupt.

I agree with your libertarian understanding of human nature (and rights) with regard to enterprise and responsibility but as a socio-economic model it has limits. Laissez-faire economics, without government, is a utopian ideology equivalent to communism. Human nature will never be so pure or our laws so precise to make it work. Personally I believe utopian ideologies to be delusional and dangerous—to liberty.

Now please don’t vote me off the island for being blunt.

Your quote

'The laissez-faire capitalism in the stile of the Chicago School leads right to where we are now in America' is not true. The New Deal headed away from laissez-faire and the Great Society is near opposite to it. The number question defines our discussion. Is total gov expenditure at 44.9% of GDP too high, too low, just about right. Just from his speeches, it is obvious (and I agree) that Ron Paul prefers much less, say 20%. Neither RP or I would argue for no government, so you need to discontinue using that as a straw man. What number is right for you?

As for monopoly, jfree below is right, government is monopoly by definition, and therefore much more prevalent and damaging. Through it's size, gov entangles itself with business (i.e. $2 billion paid for lobbyists), giving corporations power they would not have in a more laissez-faire system.

Corporate monopolies are a form of big governemnt

We have no defense against monopoly when our legal system means nothing to trans-national corporations. Our courts are in corporatist hands. This leads to a corporate form of authoritarian state. We see it growing under Bush, Clinton, Bush, and Regan. For example, the oil companies are a monopoly and they have nearly full control of our current government. That is why we are in Iraq.

Also:
Communism is virtually dead because it failed against mixed capitalist economies. But laissez-faire capitalism will bring it back from the dead.

Monopoly is almost

Monopoly is almost inevitably a result of government sponsorship/laws/etc - not a result of competition/markets.

Personally, I do see a real value in having serious anti-trust laws to preserve competition (JIC) - but IMO the courts are the proper venue for those issues - not the legislature/executive.

Same thing in USSR of the 50's and 60's

The workers farms spanned 10's of thousands of acres. The workers had barracks. Each family had a tiny plot.

You guessed it, the tiny plots that belonged to the families produced more food than the gazillion acres being worked for the state.

I hate statists and as far as I can tell? Everybody else does too.

America Needs a Crank

Interesting article in OpEdNews.com on Ron Paul.

I like what he has to say about the neocon/neoliberal war party.

It's looking more and more like the Washington Establishment is starting wars as an excuse to raise taxes, spend money and increase their power over the rest of us.

Amuzon1 Thank you, and Thank you Dr. Mercola

Dr. Mercola at www.mercola.com who has a 1.3 milliion subscriber list has Endorsed Ron Paul in the same newsletter as this "Thanksgiving Hoax article"
http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2007/11/2...
This is huge and a big boost for the Dr. Paul campaign.

You have far more influence with Michael Nystrom than I do as my post got ignored but here you are front page on Thanksgiving day with this great article.

For anyone who wants the best natural and alternative health perspective, (from a great Ron Paul supporter no less) on just about anything be sure to sign up for Dr. Mercola's free newsletter on his site.

Haha, I don't know about

Haha, I don't know about more influence and I'm not sure what post of yours you're referring to, but I think the post message is what was most important to Mr. Nystrom. Though, I must say I am pleased it made front page! (now I don't have to go hunt for it to see what others think of it! :)

Blessings,
Danielle

You're welcome

I'm glad you guys are happy to be reading this today. Though I can't take the credit. Dr. Mercola shared it on his newsletter today. I contemplated whether or not I should post it because, after all, it IS Thanksgiving, and history notwithstanding, it is always a good thing to be grateful and thankful for the many blessings we have. Having said that, it also just reiterates our favorite statesman's position on free trade and the benefits of it. :) GO RON PAUL!!!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my fellow Paulites and fellow human beings, no matter their journey, on this very Thankful day!

Danielle

Thank you for this

The original idea of the strong helping the weak was a Christian idea. This is still a good idea. BUT the difference is that it must come voluntarily, not be imposed on us by a law or third person who is probably a parasite. The very early Christians probably lived by this maxim, but it was not something that was imposed on them by any law.

Can can we be totally happy when there are those in the world without clean water to use? We will be happier if we are generous and share our excess to help others who do not have the basics needs of living.

Stopping Thanksgiving day prep

to thank you for posting this. Plymouth Mass is not far from me and free enterprise education is my career. A recent poster spoke of gun rights not getting enough "air-time" on DP. I feel the same about free enterprise.

Your post should be shouted from the mountaintops, because disrespect of free enterprise is a core reason for Big Government and, subsequently, a core reason to elect Ron Paul and others of his ilk.

Thank you Amuzon --

Abe Said It Best

The year that is drawing towards its close, has been filled with the blessings of fruitful fields and healthful skies. To these bounties, which are so constantly enjoyed that we are prone to forget the source from which they come, others have been added, which are of so extraordinary a nature, that they cannot fail to penetrate and soften even the heart which is habitually insensible to the ever watchful providence of Almighty God. In the midst of a civil war of unequalled magnitude and severity, which has sometimes seemed to foreign States to invite and to provoke their aggression, peace has been preserved with all nations, order has been maintained, the laws have been respected and obeyed, and harmony has prevailed everywhere except in the theatre of military conflict; while that theatre has been greatly contracted by the advancing armies and navies of the Union. Needful diversions of wealth and of strength from the fields of peaceful industry to the national defence, have not arrested the plough, the shuttle, or the ship; the axe had enlarged the borders of our settlements, and the mines, as well of iron and coal as of the precious metals, have yielded even more abundantly than heretofore. Population has steadily increased, notwithstanding the waste that has been made in the camp, the siege and the battle-field; and the country, rejoicing in the consciousness of augmented strength and vigor, is permitted to expect continuance of years with large increase of freedom.

No human counsel hath devised nor hath any mortal hand worked out these great things. They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God, who, while dealing with us in anger for our sins, hath nevertheless remembered mercy. It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. And I recommend to them that while offering up the ascriptions justly due to Him for such singular deliverances and blessings, they do also, with humble penitence for our national perverseness and disobedience, commend to his tender care all those who have become widows, orphans, mourners or sufferers in the lamentable civil strife in which we are unavoidably engaged, and fervently implore the interposition of the Almighty Hand to heal the wounds of the nation and to restore it as soon as may be consistent with the Divine purposes to the full enjoyment of peace, harmony, tranquillity and Union.

Honest Abe

To be honest about Honest Abe, he was a pretty questionable character himself.

I won't delve into that can of worms today though.
