Glenn Beck as Network's Howard Beale. What do you think?

0 votes

That's what Beck says himself in the recent NYT spread:

In an interview, Mr. Beck, who recently rewatched the 1976 film “Network,” said he identified with the character of Howard Beale, the unhinged TV news anchorman who declares on the air that he is “mad as hell.”

Here's Howard Beale admonishing us for being TV-watching idiots and imploring us to turn it off. Do you think we'll hear Beck say anything of the sort?

Network. Have you seen it? It is one of those films that is required viewing. Do you think Beck wonders if he'll meet the same end as Howard Beale?

Beale was better than Beck

Beck is so plastic, when he talks about his personal life, it;s as if he's reading the back of a video box... sure Beck as beale... if Beck only had real balls. Beck has plastic balls. That's funny.

For the love of CHRIST can

For the love of CHRIST can we please STOP with the Glenn Beck nonsense! No Ron Paul supporter should be doting over someone who loves war and empire as much as Glenn Beck does. Quit grasping at straws here people and demand better. Beck may come around some day but until he stops advocating the slaughter of innocent blood in the middle east, he does not have my respect.

Well said.

Thomas Jefferson would NOT work for Fox news.

What I like about Beck is that he pokes at both sides.

Beck

I don't believe he is sincere...let him talk like this for a few years 1st

Never heard of it

Until George Noory started playing it over a year ago. Often when he had Icke or Jones on.

To me, it's more johnny-come-lately bandwagon jumping, taking what he thinks worked somewhere else and co-opting the message for his pied piper misdirection.

I still like Beck though. It makes it easier to talk about this stuff with my Rep/Conserv friends. Sooo soo glad it was Obama and not McCain doing this.

Beale was "real"

Beale, in the movie, was certain of his beliefs and didn't really waver from them. Beck, has figured a new way to make money from blue collar types.

I refer to him as a "poor man's Rush Limbaugh". Both say the same thing.

"poor man's Rush Limbaugh" - really good....

I have to agree. I was starting to change my mind about gb when I heard him being interviewed by Napolitano (sp?). But after listening to him today on the radio, my past impression of him (mostly negative) was reinforced. A caller asked him if he would discsuss the legality of the federal income tax, at which point he began mocking Wesly Snipes for fighting his taxes and basically agreed with the caller that it is "our duty" as Amerikans to pay taxes. You can recognize this breed of neocon by their hipocracy. They complain the most about high taxes, then, when you say that the income tax is illegal or at the very least we should get rid of it, they back down and say we can't do that. (They are benefiting more from the structure than it costs them)

"Do you think we'll hear Beck say anything of the sort?"

I sure won't hear him. Even if he does say anything of the sort.

Why are we still talking about him? He's neither relevant nor interesting nor trustworthy.

Who Cares

he is just there to hopefully create "good tv" for his boss....
all of his talking and all of our talking is never going to change anything -

we need to get proactive and try to do something quick -
and stop talking about stuff - and listening to guys like this as if our
hearing things from these types is going to ever do anything to change the
way things are!

I think Beck....

is a big ole gate keeping fake.
Other than that he is ok.

I'm not sure about Glenn

I'm not sure about Glenn Beck. I'm mean, the guy actually said in that NYT article that he hopes people don't take him seriously and that he's a "rodeo clown."

What more can the guy say?

Please, let's forget this guy....

Stop

with the fake Beck posts.

I think you're right. Howard

I think you're right.

Howard Beale is fictional as is Beck's sincerity.

Yes, the network is great

No, this has nothing to do with advancing liberty in this country.
I almost never post. I am today.
I too cannot stand seeing this movie foolishly manipulated, commercialized and referenced.
Still I am more sick of the Beck topics. Whether you like him or think he's the anti-christ - I do not care.
Questions of Beck's character do not deserve the front page of the DP.
Lets please move on to more constructive topics.

Yes! Thank you!

Can we please stop talking about this gasbag yet? It's pointless!!!

What happened ...

to Howard Beale ?

Dead

He was shot for shock amusement, to the applause and cheers to an ignorant and reactionary TV crowd.

Funny thing just happened...

I was here a few hours ago.. then I went to peter schiffs myspace page while I was checking my account there.. then I left a comment asking if he was going to run. Then I said, "Self, you should email Beck and ask him to bring Schiff on."

And here is what I wrote:

There is a rumor that Schiff may take on Dodd for his senate seat. He has said he hasnt ruled it out, but he needs to make up his mind soon. So far 5000 people have signed up to support him at http://www.schiff2010.com/ and he has raised over $25,000 without even asking for a dime. This facebook page has started http://www.facebook.com/pages/Peter-Schiff-for-Senate-2010/4... and here is another blurb about it: http://digg.com/politics/Peter_Schiff_considering_Senate_run...

And of course, the online Paul supporters are behind him 100%: http://www.dailypaul.com/node/77565

I dont trust many people in media. I believe Thomas Jefferson summed it up best, "Advertisements are the only truths to be relied upon in newspapers." Although I want to trust you, Im apprehensive. I do respect you. You take on issues that nobody else will touch in the media and I hope you continue in your pursuit of the truth. Ive been listening to you for years and will continue to do so. My only hope is that you dont use this liberty movement exclusively for yourself. You might not agree with Paul on foreign policy, its even hard for me to. For me, I would rather disagree on a few issues and have a leader that I can trust than one that I cannot and tells me what I want to hear.

Please bring Schiff on your show and ask him if he is going to run. There is alot of left over energy from Paul's campaign and it sure would be nice to get behind the guy who called this financial mess we are in. I believe, and Im no political genius here, that Dodd could have his ass handed to him. He lies, flip flopped and now his home state is scratching their heads asking themselves if they want him around. We need more free market people on the hill and it would be an underdog victory for those that support conservative positions.

If there is one thing that America needs the most in DC is dissent. As Jefferson said, "Dissent is the highest form of patriotism."

Thanks for reading. I wish you the best

'Peace is a powerful message.' Ron Paul

Very nice

You should talk to yourself more often.
I hope Beck takes your advice.
Ditch that dude Dodd!

My 2 Cents

I would suggest Beck be contrasted with characters from Less than Zero.

Beale is a better ACTOR

Beale is a better ACTOR

Ventura 2012

I really like the message in first video. Favorited.

The second just annoys me. I don't think we should be screaming, I'm of the mind we should be fighting.

Ron Paul's Convention Speech

Is this...

supposed to be a bashing of beck. Did you not read the NY Times article today? Beck said if anyone takes what he says as gospel, then they are an idiot.

Interesting...

why is he promoting what he says so heavily then?? He is a FAKE...he wants people to think the liberty movement is for idiots.

Love the film Network

I first saw clips from it of Howard Beale in some great Ron Paul videos last year so I had to go out and buy it for myself. It is great. When I read that Glen Beck envisioned himself as our Howard Beale, I laughed at the obvious push to try and make Glenn be the "one" whom "liberty lovers and truth seekers" follow to be set free from the evil empire of the media and of government. It is a set up and a joke and he is such a phony. Come on frogs. Can't you see that getting into this water bath with Glen Beck is just a ruse? Once the water begins to boil, it is too late.
