Nor does the tapes' Osama sound like Osama. In 2007 Switzerland's Dalle Molle Institute for Artificial Intelligence, which does computer voice recognition for bank security, compared the voices on 15 undisputed recordings of Osama with the voices on 15 subsequent ones attributed to Osama, to which they added two by native Arab speakers who had trained to imitate him and were reading his writings. All of the purported Osama recordings (with one falling into a gray area) differed clearly from one another as well as from the genuine ones. By contrast, the CIA found all the recordings authentic. It is hard to imagine what methodology might support this conclusion.

First, they only tested 1 unauthenticated Osama tape, not 15. They used 15 Osama recordings to train it, then 15 authenticated Osama tapes, 15 Arabics speakers, 2 workers from the IDIAP institute, and 1 unauthenticated Osama tape. It was correct on all the Arabic speakers, the 2 IDIAP workers. It said 2 recordings had a chance of not being him. The unauthenticated tape, and one of the authenticated tapes that they know was him. The authenticated tape had a higher percentage of not being Osama than did the tape in question. The tape is question was just over the limit of casting doubt. Not certainity, doubt.

Conclusion

The work reported here was mainly motivated by pure scientific curiosity, also aiming at showing the possibilities and limitations offered by automatic speaker authentication system in non-optimal conditions (typically, noisy environments and limited amount of recordings). While this study does not permit us to draw any definite (statistically significant) conclusions, it nonetheless shows that there is serious room for doubt, and that it is also difficult to agree with some US officials saying that it is 100% sure that it is bin Laden. When addressing a problem with a scientific perspective (as opposed to a political approach), one has to be ready to also accept the uncertainty of the results. Even if the confidence of these results can be boosted by exploiting multiple automatic systems and multiple human expert opinions, it will never be possible to authenticate the latest bin Laden tape with 100% assurance.
