If you had $500 to prepare for economic collapse, what would you get?

0 votes

So my wife and I are getting a tax refund, and have done some end of the world preparation, but we just don't have the money to get 1000oz of gold, 50,000 cans of soup, a 5 acre piece of land and 500 guns and ammo like some of you. If you had $500 to spend, what would be your priorities for maximum survival time, comfort and preparation? Any thoughts would be helpful!

Here's what we do have roughly:

30 cans of food or so, 50 lb bag of sugar, flour, beans, 300 bottles of water, hand-operated can opener, pepper spray, military grade knife, baseball bat, camping stove, propane bottles, tent, sleeping bag, water filter, a bit of silver

I see

anti-biotics listed here fairly often. I would like to add that if you keep your system with a balanced ph then viruses, bacteria, fungi..even cancer cannot live in your body.
One of the fastest easiest cheapest ways to do this is with apple cider vinegar ( the kind from the healthfood store with the 'mother' in it...very cheap per gallon) and honey.

Use 2 T. vinegar with 2 T honey in 2-4 oz of water. Drink this combo 3x per day.
If you are exposed to colds, flu, yes, even bird flu...simply make a glass of ACV and honey and sip on it all day long to keep your Ph up thru the day. Voila!!
The advantage to this is you don't need a prescription...a gallon lasts a long time for a family. Check out ACV uses on the web. You'll be amazed...I was.

There is no such thing as magic

This is snake oil sales talk. The simple fact is, anyone may eventually develop a cancer of some variety, although cancers that run in the family may be a strong indicator of possible cancer growth in the offspring.

Additionally, the human body harbors a range of bacteria (something between 500 to 1,000 types) that are not simply eradicated with a home remedy. There are trillions of microorganisms in our gut alone.

Drink vinegar if you like, but you are not ingesting a magic elixir.

Spend it on activist materials and we could avoid a collapse

Well, spend $400 on activists stuff and $100 on storable foods. You can get a ton of stuff and a 30 gallon tote to keep it in at big lots or a dollar store.

I would sell everything and get plane tickets out of this place.

I would definately go for

I would definately go for gun/s and ammo.Self defense should be your first priority. As someone said earlier, food is not a concern if you and your family are dead.I agree with the SKS, however there is a more cost effective rifle and ammo set up.The Mosin Nagant is a Russian military surplus rifle that can be had for $100.00 or less.It is a large caliber rifle(7.62x54r), very capable of self defense and hunting most any North American game. This ammo is priced at about $160.00 for 800 rounds. The rifle is a bolt action and pretty darn accurate. It does have a bit of kick to it though. With this rifle and ammo combo, it would allow for a cheap used pump action or new single shot 12 gauge shotgun and ammo(better for home defense and good game getter). In my humble opinion you would be fairly well armed for the $500.00 allowed in your budget. Then I would move on to other "survival" supplies as your finances allow....Good luck and God bless!

I would probably buy:

More food, maybe some dehydrated eggs and milk.
Candles, solar flashlight and LED lamps and lots of batteries
short-wave solar radio
Seeds
gun and ammo (if you don't already have one)
An 8 quart camping stock pot in case you would need to cook outdoors(you can bake bread in these if you need to)
matches
extra toilet paper

Seeds are your best investment.

Try investing in seeds, they can be planted and will bring you real return on your investment.

I actually inventoried and organized my supplies. One thing not mentioned that I've been stocking up on is Charcoal. I have 10- 20 lb. bags and 6 cans of lighter. Can't go wrong with a webber, they last forever. It took me almost 3 hours to sort and inventory everything and I feel alot of relief now that it's all organized. I've also been dehydrating fruits. Stocked up on batteries of all sizes. Have my garden started in the house and used heirloom seeds. I have antibiotics and an extensive first aide kit that I put together myself.

I've been preparing for some time.
5200 watts of solar panels on 50 acres and a Yurt and Travel Trailer

$500 -
- I'd buy rattlesnake anti-venom kit in case of a bite ($50-$100)
- Another 18-20 gauge gun with some Ammo ($200)
- Some dry goods ($100-$150)
- Antibiotics ($50-$100)
- 50 gallons of diesel fuel for the tractor/generator ($100)

Wow!

That's a lot of solar power! Do you sell surplus to the power company or are you completely off-grid? If off-grid, what size battery bank do you have?

I've got a foldaway 30-Watt thin-film system for wilderness bug-out location use and have 480 Watts' worth of panels plus 660 amps' worth of AGM batteries and a couple 30-amp charge controllers (one as backup) waiting in my Northern Tools shopping cart. I already have a 3kw inverter and two deep-cycle batteries for another 202 amps of storage, plus a very quiet Honda 3000i generator for backup electricity.

It sounds like you've got the juice to power an interstellar laser cannon, although I suppose it's not that extreme compared to peak usage in a big, modern household.

I tend to agree with the gun advocates

because you'll have a chunk of money that it sounds like you rarely have available, so use it to buy the bigger-ticket item. Check local ammunition availability before you buy and get ammo right away so you know you've got it. Find someone who can help you learn to use your gun if you've never had one before.

Next is water and food. The water won't be difficult or costly but don't risk putting it off. For an entry-level goal, figure out what you would eat in two months vs. what you have, then work at making up the difference. There are many ways of saving money if you put your mind to it:

Combine trips. Shop on the way home from work.
Question the necessity of every item you put in the shopping cart.
Look for store brands and other bargains.
No more Saturday/Sunday shopping trips.
Eat a low-budget breakfast. Oatmeal is really cheap and healthy.
Make your own coffee for the day. Instant works.
(Or go off of coffee. It's a drug dependency.)
Plan dinner. Thaw, soak, pre-boil, throw in crock pot, etc. in morning.
(No excuse for takeout or eating out later.)
Don't buy anything but gas at the gas station. Nothing!
Skip your mid-morning snack or eat an apple you brought from home.
Eat a simple lunch you made at home. No chips, no desserts.
Skip your mid-afternoon snack.
Cancel your magazine subscriptions and your cable TV.
(Get a part-time/volunteer evening job if your life seems suddenly empty.)
Lower your phone bill. Call when it's free. Don't call when it's not.

There are many things in your life I have no clue about so you need to do a faithful budget and look at each dollar you spend during a typical week or month. Do you wear clothes only once before washing? Do you take showers whether you need them or not? Do you do dry-cleaning more than twice a year? Do you have a bowling night, card night, give money to bums, kids, grand kids, did I say bums? Do you put money in the collection plate because your pastor said God demands it of you?

Do you spend money on a hobby? Is your hobby emergency preparedness? How about switching hobbies.

What do you NOT need to buy for your car? Don't buy it then. And don't wash it so often. Do you own your house? Do you hire people to do maintenance that you could do yourself? Do you spend gobs on your lawn? Look ahead to when the utilities quit working and the trash man hasn't come for three months. Is your great-looking lawn really so important to maintain? Let the lawn suffer now so you don't have to later.

Bottom line, set new priorities. Set a one-month savings goal and see if you can beat it.

Or maybe this survival thing isn't for you. I know, tough choice...

Wood burning Stove

Living up here in the Great North, if you don't have a backup plan for heat, you are Nuts! I have a wood buring stove for cooking and heat. IF we have electricity and natural gas, that is great. I am assuming at some point, we will have no utilities and will be screwed if you do not have a wood burning stove for heat and cooking (melting snow for water). And, not one of those stoves that has a fan. Newer homes up here do not come equipped with wood burning fireplaces any more, just gas!

Also, I am looking into those build your own Solar panel kits/directions they sell for 50 bucks. That would be the cats meow if power goes out and I still have juice for the fridge and some lights and radio. Would save a ton of batteries and candles! Might also be able to power a small fan to put behind the wood burning stove to spread heat around the house.

Does anybody have more details on a SKS Rifle? All I have is a 20 gauge Remington shot gun for protection, which is making me nervous. It would only be good for short range FEMA hunting. I was thinking a 30 caliber rifle would come in handy.

What back up heat/power plans do other fellow Northerners have?

Agree

Everybody should have a wood burning stove - even if you live in an area where burning wood is not legal (I have 3). You can buy a funtional stove stove from Northern Tools for $250 - $500. However, you need to spend about $1,000 for the chimney system. Don't cheap out on the chimney - a wood stove isn't worth much if it burns your house down. A couple of years ago, a freak snowstorm stranded me on my property for over a month. Power was intermittent. Life would have really sucked without a wood stove.

An SKS is a really good weapon, especially for the price, that uses the same ammo and clips as an AK47. The SKS is more accurate than the AK, just not as manuverable. The SKS is about 1/2 the price of an AK. Ammo is about 20 cents per round in quantity.
