Near the top of the article, we find this quote from Capt. Ted Ross, head of operations for the department:
"Anything we can do to make the officers and the general public safer, we're willing to do. We hope we never have to use it."
However, apparently they did not hope for it very much, as later it is revealed that
"The vehicle was pressed into service its first day back from the shop in February, when the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency executed a "high-risk" search warrant on Portland Street, at a reputed drug house where guns were present. No shots were fired."
To those who noted it is an APC, I realize I omitted some quotation marks that I will include. The average person does not know what "APC" means, and I got the term "tank" from the article:
"The department is in the process of configuring an M113 armored personnel carrier – affectionately referred to as a "tank" – for civilian law enforcement."
Lying, drama-addicted, egomaniacs with tanks. Yay.

Just because it does not have a turret, does not mean it's not a tank.
It's an armored vehicle that can be fired from - it puts superior firepower and power in the hands of the government taking an equal amount from the people.
If the government raided you with this "tank," how would you defend yourself?

i avoid portland as much as possible. the police there are instructed to harass you if they see you carrying a gun.
I agree its pretty stupid and a waste of the budget.
But ANYTHING that small can be taken out with just two concussion grenades or a good ol explosion so its not worth making a big fuss over.

I find it insulting to see that kind of equipment commissioned for use against the citizens. If they are peace keepers, perhaps they should invest in some people who have training in de-escalating situations instead of the equipment to mow down anyone they can't "reason" with.
Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

my point was that there is both a wheeled vehicle and a tracked vehicle. there seemed to be confusion on this. i was not getting into the semantics of tank vs apc.

I love it when Dr Paul rolls out this old chestnut: once again we're asked to prove a negative. Because you cannot prove the Portland police will not need such a vehicle, tanks (or APC's or whatever) are deemed useful tools by the government. You can't prove it won't be needed therefore having one is a measure of just how much they care about your safety. Ain't that sweet. As the gov escalates their firepower our society will become more and more violent. As ying is to yang. Where's the wisdom?
Safety is paradox. You cannot be safe if you do not trust people.

.50 caliber rifles can trash these things in one or two shots. I don't see the use of one but I have met people in gun stores that apparently feel the need.

That is not a tank (it has wheels not tracks). It is an armored personnel carrier and civilians can own/insure/drive APCs.
Let's call a spade a spade, and APC an APC.
