Gun and ammunition sales have been spiking, partly due to fears President Obama will reinstate a federal ban on assault weapons, but the weapons aren't practical for home protection, a state governor said.
"It’s nuts for ordinary citizens to go out and buy assault weapons," Gov. Ed Rendell, D-Pa., told CNBC. "Assault weapons are difficult to operate, they jam easily. If you want a gun to protect your home it’s the last thing you should have." (See video for more.)
Rendell, who has been a vocal supporter of reinstating the ban on assault weapons, which expired in 2004, says federal and state lawmakers must stand against the gun lobby and support reinstating the ban.
"These weapons have one purpose," added Rendell. "...They’re to kill and to maim, and they shouldn’t be in the hands of anyone else but the police and the military."
ok, what does he want then....
If he wants to ban all weapons that kill or maim, I'm sure he'll want to ban the living citizen as well. Because anything can be a weapon.
They want to ban everything and "protect" us from ourselves.
If he is so worried about our weapons jamming or that we don't know how to shoot, then he needs to show some evidence.
"Ordinary citizen". He implies 2 things. He implies that assault weapon people are not ordinary and pro-gun people are not ordinary. He praises the rest for being "ordinary citizens" who are not nuts.
Someone better vote him out of office before he spills all his nutty language out.
For any ladies out there...
I have a friend who has an "assault weapon", and she says that it is VERY lady-friendly: low recoil (doesn't hurt your shoulder-shoot all day and put on the strapless dress that night!)) has adjustable stock (for shorter arms) and comes in less heavy models (easy to carry). It's a .223 caliber, which isn't too different from a .22 lr or magnum cartridge. Only one bullet is fired for every time you pull/squeeze the trigger, but another cartridge is advanced into the chamber, ready to be shot (hence, semi-auto or auto-loading). I can't wait to visit her and try that puppy out!
What the oppressors can't do to you in person, they do through legislation. As far as what a person prefers to keep in his/her home for protection is his/her business and responsibility ...the politicians have no Constitutional jurisdiction over our choice of personal protection - especially in our homes.
Now, if I could have Fluffy, the giant three-headed pitbull from Harry Potter as a guard dog... =}

that my Saiga does not jam often, in fact it just might be one of the least likely guns to jam in the world. What exactly IS an assault weapon?
I have been curious as to what an assault weapon actually is. I know it is a gun, most likely a top of rifle, but shouldn't it be fully automatic? Speaking of which, where the heck can you buy a full-auto gun? I can only find semi-auto guns that look a little like the big guns.
Is my semi-auto ruger .22 carbine an assault weapon? What if I give it a nifty clear-plastic bannana clip for holding 25 rounds? Is it odd that the first time I fired it, I was actualy shooting targets accurately at 65ft, seeing as how the only other type of guns I have fired are a BB gun and a paintball gun (so much for my theory of "first person shooters don't make you good at shooting").
And very good point that people brought up about the "assault weapons are for killing and maiming, which is why only police and the army should have them".

or run over cars, but because I have more of a right to own whatever the hell I want as long as it doesn't adversely effect another, than the government has the right to spend my money on it, use it to harm me or you, and not let me own one myself.

I am also going to get nothing but tweeters and put a 500 watt amp in my tank, and park it at the fuel pump and blast Flatt & Scruggs out of my tweeters for all to hear.
