I refer to myself as a libertarian even though I'm registered Republican.
The terms are all so loaded that one wrong word can shut down any conversation.

Not true. Real American conservatives are worshipers of the past. The constitution is our past. Therefore, say the constitution and they will melt and come running. Anyone who does not do so is not a conservative but a neo-con. Its the best litmus test.

Please do use the word conservative, at least when speaking with Republicans. We have the advantage that other countries do not have because conservatism means constitutionalism in the US.

Well, you have a heck of a fight on your hands to reclaim a word.

What I'm seeing--for good or for bad--is that mainstream GOP conservatives are busily setting up shop to coopt and usurp our entire movement and anything that can be termed 'constitutionalist'. I knew that would happen as soon as Obama won the election. There's no way we can operate politically as Republicans without becoming Republicans. It's irrational to sugest otherwise.

There are some good aspects to it, because some of our ideas will become mainstream. But it's too late now, in my opinion, to balk at being hijacked.
