Some experts on false testimony resulting from torture have begun to question some details in the Sheikh's confession: "How could he have been involved in the Red Sox trading babe Ruth or the OJ Simpson acquittal, nevermind getting Bush elected a second time! would be 6 times a day every day. I doubt it. These people are too lazy to leave their computers to put in this sort of effort. Torturing people is actual work and if there is one thing I have learned about the CIA is that they are LAZY both intellectually and physically.

Why torture?
My theory is the US government uses torture for the exact same reason every other tyrant in history has used torture. To force a confession so the "guilty" can be convicted in a kangaroo court and then disposed of for political reasons. This is the only thing torture has ever been used for. Torture is a symptom of bad policy not the cause. As such it should be prosecuted without mercy.

If it's gotta be a guy then I guess there's no better villain, but aren't we missing something?
As a psychology major I remember studying how dangerous 'groupthink' can be, because of diffusion of responsibility, etc. There's a blanket protecting individual actors because there are many working in concert under the guise of a favorable (for them) ideology. Horrible atrocities are enabled and allowed to happen under such decision-making structures. For example, Monsanto is evil, but those who (who, exactly?) managed its sinister operations somehow avoid our direct scorn and subsequently, somehow, incarceration.
