Misdemeanors such as assaults, thefts and burglaries will no longer be prosecuted in Contra Costa County because of budget cuts, the county's top prosecutor said Tuesday.

District Attorney Robert Kochly also said that beginning May 4, his office will no longer prosecute felony drug cases involving smaller amounts of narcotics. That means anyone caught with less than a gram of methamphetamine or cocaine, less than 0.5 grams of heroin and fewer than five pills of ecstasy, OxyContin or Vicodin won't be charged.

People who are suspected of misdemeanor drug crimes, break minor traffic laws, shoplift, trespass or commit misdemeanor vandalism will also be in the clear. Those crimes won't be prosecuted, either.

"We had to make very, very difficult choices, and we had to try to prioritize things. There are no good choices to be made here," said Kochly, a 35-year veteran prosecutor. "It's trying to choose the lesser of certain evils in deciding what we can and cannot do."

I live in Contra Costa

I live in Contra Costa County, and all I can say is "it's about time"!!

I have lived here for 3 years, and in that time I have had 12 citations from the San Ramon police/ Code compliance.

I have fought and won all 12, and I am close to filing a lawsuit against the city. These guys will give you a ticket for having "for sale" written on your car (which I got), they will give a ticket if you park in front of your house for more than 72 hours in a row (which I have received), they will ticket you for having a 5 foot tall pine tree in your yard if it isnt perfectly groomed (also received) and almost anything else.

That's what being greedy will get you

I don't know what kind of area it is, but sounds like they're more about image and communism, than some of the other more liberal areas of California. Good for you for taking them to court! Otherwise you would have been lining the pockets of some greedy politician.

This is how the Revolution can happen!

In the 120 years before the Revolutionary War, American were constantly rebelling against the British authority. Contrary to popular belief, revolution didn't start at Lexington. It was occurring for years because the laws, taxes, acts, and regulations that the British tried to impose on the Colonies were always undercut by an American black market, essentially a free market.

If today government can not get enough funding to ever enforce the laws, then what are why do we feel compelled to obey them? Of course this is only one case but do you no think that this could spread. Eventually, could the govt just be seen as a joke and the people just do as they please, as the individuals of the Colonies had done?

If we don't change our direction, we're likely to end up where we are headed.

If we don't change our direction, we're likely to end up where we are headed.

Good.

Now people can take back their neighborhoods from the thugs, cops and others who have stolen their lives. They can once again, defend themselves and their property as it (rightfully) should be. I bet crime would drop like a rock.

before this will work

the city needs to lift ordinances, and allow gun-ownership and militia, so that your neighbors can help you.

im all about ending the war on drugs, but i sure as heck wouldn't feel better about the da announcing that they aren't going to presecute burglary with one hand, while the other hand prevents you from protecting yourself.

california is the worst next to dc when it comes to gun ownership.

if i couldn't buy a gun, i suppose a cross-bow would do.

Why? If no one is there to enfore the ordinance...

..it's as good as repealed.

My thoughts exactly.

they said they are still

Prosecuting all firearms charges.

So what then...

they'll prosecute a person for defending his life and property because they won't come to their neighborhood? You have a "natural" right to defend yourself. Jeez. It's common sense to me but, when you're assaulted, you can get in the fetal position and pray that they leave you alone.

I was just discussing with a

I was just discussing with a friend this afternoon about how any level of governement, when faced with a dollar shortage, will cut fire protection, police protection, prosecution of criminals, teachers and books for kids, but they never seem to take out those ridiculous bureaucracies like Planning and Zoning that people would like to be rid of. Schools cut teachers, books and supplies, but never get rid of those expensive but generally useless administrators.

Not enough money? Punish those damn citizens for refusing to vote for more tax dollars!

Pat

BOHICA!!

Pat

BOHICA!!

You are so right!

But it's the same old song, cut from the bottom of the totem pole not the top! Californians need to bring this up at townhalls and protest.

Drug War

Take the money away from the government and get some of your liberties back. What a novel idea.

i called the congressional

i called the congressional switchboard to support hr 1207 and they transferred me to ron pauls office by mistake. i did mention i was calling about hr 1207 so they must be getting a lot of calls in order to know it was dr. pauls bill. anyway since i was on the phone with one of his assistants I asked him what was ron pauls posistion on comprehensive annual financial reports. He did not understand my question and seemed unfamiliar with the term. didnt find out anything but i tried.

This is nothing...

There is a town where peace and brotherhood broke out and people stopped committing crimes. They shared all things in common and it even got so crazy that all the former drug users stopped using drugs because they realized it was stupid and harmful. They only used them in proper context as needed for medical pain or whatever.

There was no need for enforcers of regulations or regulations at all. No need for police. The police ended up becoming community organizers and paying more attention to looking after the elderly and the many other good things police do. People realized that force has never worked in human history and that the power of love and example was truly powerful.

People no longer speed because they loved and respected life and didn't wan't to risk harming it. Theirs , another person or even an animal. The place became possessed with peace.

Even when criminals from distant places came by they felt it and couldn't steal from these people of the way of peace. Darkai Shalom.

Just where is this town?

Is it called Galt's Gulch?

Liberal Insanity

Okay I don't agree with drug prohibition laws especially on the Federal level!

But to stop prosecuting potentially violent crimes is absolutely rediculous as it relates to assaults, thefts and burglaries!

I find it interesting that California local governments absolutely refuse to address the issue of illegal immigration and the gangs that stem from it.

REFORM THE WELFARE SYSTEM USING RON PAUL'S SIX POINT PLAN FROM HIS 2008 CAMPAIGN!!!

The article actually mentioned misdemeanors...

Burglary is a felony, and I believe the article specifically named petty theft, minor traffic violations and vandalism. I understand your concern, but assault and burglaries are legally not in the same category - misdemeanors. The poster above is correct, it will now be up to the shopkeepers and neighborhood watch to police their neighborhoods, within legal limits. The economic impact this will have will be interesting...that is whether business that are getting vandalized and thieved, will remain open under this county budget problem.

The democrats

are easy on illegals because they want the Hispanic vote and that's important if they want to keep Ca locked up. Keynesian economics likes their spending, and businesses and homeowners like the low wages they accept.

They don't care

About your vote. LOL, that's FUNNY. They could care less! We live in a FORCED SYSTEM!!! They also have DIEBOLD. They do what they want anyway!!! It doesn't matter WHO they put in place, IT STILL RUNS THE SAME. The families at the top OWN US.

I don't agree

The Immigration issue is a MSM fabrication. What I see happening here in CA in we have major agricultural organizations like Conagra and Monsanto, renting the farms out from under the farmer and govt subsidizing and making offers.. few years ago the government was paying $200 per grape vine destroyed.

The chemicals used in these massive operations, and this goes for ranching, and organic farming because pepperspray is a pesticide, so unless there's a prison camp that has enough workers, these BIG corporations, which the liberals in CA protest, and the GOP protects, needs workers who can't sue their asses if they get sick or hurt.

They send people to Mexico and promise them jobs and opportunity. You can drive through the bread basket and see signs on banks, in Spanish, "Send $3,000.00 to Mexico for $5.00".

Farming is a seasonal job that has since it's beginning DEPENDED on immigration.. migrant farm workers are NEEDED.. and Americans say they will do the jobs, but notice.. those jobs are NOT offered to you.. those jobs, because they are working in a hazardous area, are being given to prisoners and migrants willing to risk their life to send money home to Mexico.

Meanwhile... we have migrant laws in CA, and the ranchers and farmers, with govt help, parks, land management, etc, they enable some young workers to rise by going into business, growing pot along the Sierra (parks have become a war zone, armed rangers and LAOs.. MSM says the marijuana industry is $40 billion (and how one sends home $3,000.00 to Mexico).. fast food chains, another thing liberals loathe, has been set up for the migrant worker. All these jobs that pay under $100.00 Hr are Migrant worker jobs, and why if you have a job that pays less than that, you are probably going to be moving.

The NAU is here. Now it's a matter of getting it on paper, and to do that, they need a war. Also, some of the weapons that we have created need to be tested, these robotic machines and drones. Bush said he was keeping the war over there. Well, Obama is going to bring it home with Arnold Schwartzenegger's blessing.

First they came for the immigrant, but I was not an immigrant

I don't agree that the illegal immigration issue is an msm fabrication. If you say that, then you seem to be basically saying Ron Paul has been fooled by the msm because he strongly opposes illegal immigration and amnesty for illegal aliens and made it a significant part of his presidential campaign. I don't believe Ron Paul could be fooled so easily and I don't believe illegal immigration is an msm fabrication and I believe Ron Paul is right to oppose illegal immigration and amnesty for illegal aliens.

Wasn't there news of some other area

doing something similar a few weeks ago? I believe the police were basically going to "rope off" a certain area because it was becoming too difficult to police or some such thing? Anyone remember that? Where was it? Michigan? I think I saw it on here and there was a link to the article. If anyone knows what I'm referring to it might be appropriate to post it here and keep a log of them. I think this is going to become a lot more common place.

Yes, in Flint Michigan

Yes truthy, you remember correctly, the city is Flint, Michigan. Flint is a post-industrial ghost town. I believe shutting down quadrants of the city and stopping the policing of said quadrants is currently just a proposal. But something will have to be done, and soon. Looks like a way they may approach this is........

From a recent NY Times article

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/22/business/22flint.html?hpw

"Instead of waiting for houses to become abandoned and then pulling them down, local leaders are talking about demolishing entire blocks and even whole neighborhoods."

Actuarial Militia Reform

To create property rights beyond those that would exist in the state of nature and to ensure the social stability of said property rights, the following actuarial militia is proposed to operate in locales occupied by no more than a few thousand people:

To minimize tactical voting and the resulting political parties, all votes are under the approval voting system (you can “approve” of more than one candidate). To minimize campaigning all voting is continuous—a running tally of approval is maintained at all times. The militia members accept new members at the 2/3 approval threshold and reject existing members at the 2/3 disapproval threshold. Militia members invite someone to be their leader with a 2/3 approval, ties are broken by degree of approval. Leaders are rejected at 2/3 disapproval of militia members.

By mutual consent with customers, renewed annually, the militia accepts insurance premiums in an amount set by actuarial calculations based on any information deemed appropriate by the militia, and paid in militia-issued scrip, for protection of property rights, and for their indemnification in the event of loss due to criminal act, including impositions by illegitimate governments.

Militia members are:

1) paid equal dividends as equal holders of voting shares, and

2) expected to self-equip under principles similar to those intended in the 2nd Amendment to the United States Constitution.

Militia scrip enters circulation via dividends to the members and is removed from circulation by withholding militia dividends.
