Sterilize / Neuter / Spay / Vaccinate Pets?
Submitted by cultivator on Thu, 04/23/2009 - 14:25My wife and I want to get a dog. We have a 4 yr. old son. Looks like we are wanting a chocolate lab (our first dog as a family). We are leaning torwards a female.
The big question I have is why do all pets have to be sterile? We don't want to become 'breeders', but I personally find having to sterilize "everything" is a bit odd.
And we are not super hip to getting shots...but...should we? What ones?
Any thoughts? Suggestions, Opinions...?
btw - We live in the country, on almost 2 acres and yes there are other dogs around - plus we are not going to ever be totally fenced in. I thought if we had puppies we could give them away.
Thanks,

I'm suprised nobody hs mentioned this, but female dogs
menstrate. You can buy little undies and pads, but it's not a good situation and can ruin your furniture. Spaying is definitely a good idea.

WOW! Thank you everyone!
I have enjoyed and value all of your replies! I think this will help us make the right choice.
So far it looks like we will get a female choco lab, spayed, with minimal shots, but for sure getting the critical ones. We are almost always home on our small farm and our dog will get tons of love and attention from us and our son. There are rivers everywhere around where we live and we go to them pretty often for recreation. We know someone who has a pregnant lab and just confirmed today we will get the pick of the litter.
Thanks!
Jon

I Personally Think Its Cruel
to castrate, etc. animals. May be some exceptions, not sure exactly what the exceptions would be at this moment.
Takes the life out of the males. Not sure what the fixin' does to the females.
Parvovirus will kill your animal in two, three days sometimes without warning, seemingly. Some, if caught early, can survive it, I had one that did (basset hound 8-10 years ago).
Don't play with "parvovirus" less ya wanna be burying your puppy.
Have you heard of, "I don't know why it died, two three days it was dead, without warning". Parvovirus!
Good choice!
Labs are great. Chocolates are awesome but yellows are more mellow and sensitive. Stick with a female if you want a calmer dog. Males tend to stay very energetic much longer. (labs can be very hyper) YES SPAY!
It will make them safer and better pets for many reasons. 1 A male will always be running off looking for females and fighting other dogs and the female may get hurt in the proccess.2 Have you ever had a female dog in heat in your house? It can be messy. Yes they do bleed. 3 Both male and female can be agressive about mating time. Male dogs will in many cases try to be alpha male of you household. Trust me. Spay or neuter.
Get shots for the first year but not as close together as they reccomend. Then yearly for 3 yrs. Rabies a must for outside animals and it's required. Use heartworm preventative and frontline or advantix. For heartworms use interceptor. it takes care of other worms too. 3 yr rabies shots for cats are showing cancer at the injection site on cats so keep an ear out about dogs. Informed cat owners are going to the one year shot.
At the very least Spay/neuter, Heartworm, flea&tick protection and rabies.
If you get a lab I hope you like and live near water. Mine goes kayaking with me and loves all forms of water except bath.
Why spay/neuter??????
Go volunteer at a shelter for a while. I volunteered at a shelter for a year and got to see first hand the problems with unresponsible pet owners. They have litter after litter and when they can't give them away they pass the puppies (responsibility) on to someone else (where do you think the money to run a shelter comes from). My first week at the shelter I got to watch 4 nice dogs get euthanized. I live in the country too and had 5, now have 3 hunting dogs. Trust me, neutered dogs don't roam and are much more content. And while you're at it FENCE YOUR PROPERTY! Your dogs have no business on other people's property. My husband and I busted our asses fencing 56 acres so our dogs could run free and wouldn't impose on our neighbors.
By the way, Obama did a great dis-service to this country by NOT going to a shelter for their puppy, like he said he was going to do. He could have found any type of dog in the rescue network.

Some thoughts.
I worked as a vet tech some years ago and have owned my own animals.
I have seen HORRIBLE slow deaths from parvo. In all honesty, it is an absolutely disgusting way to die. My dog came from the pound where she picked up kennel cough. She's 14 and still hacks up pflegm and has coughing fits over it due to lung scaring.
My one and only female lab was not spayed. Like many people, we wanted her to go through one season first before we had her fixed. Two different males jumped a six-foot fence and she ended up pregnant. I felt she was too young and two small to carry so we took her down for an injection to abort the pups. The injection didn't work and she ended up having ten pups. I regret giving away the puppies. I'll never know what kind of people took them or how they were treated. Out of ten pups, chances are a few suffered in their lives. I will never give away animals again. Even with "muts" I would require an interview and proof of income.
During my training, I volunteered at the county shelter. We had animals coming in so fast that we had no room. Even the "cute" ones had to be euthanized to make room for the new arrivals. They came in hungry, thristy, and scared out of their minds. We put them to sleep quietly and quickly and then threw then in the trash. I'm sure somebody loved them once. I think if you had an idea of what might happen to your potential puppies, you'd have your dog spayed.

To help save money! You can give your dog a 7 in 1 shot, puppy shots, parvo, distemper, are part of this shot. You can get them from a farmer's co-op. make sure to keep the shot cool until you get it home.If your not squeamish to giving shot's to your dog, you can save a lot of money this way. If you can't bare to give a shot, you can all so save money, before you take your dog to the vet, by calling them for an appointment and (specify) that you only wont first round of puppy shot's,/ Heart worm test, and Rabbies shot once they are older. when your at the vet's, pay attention to how they give the shot's,This way your not paying for a Doctors consultation. They raise the skin at the nap of the neck and at angle insurt the niddle. quick and simple
Be careful - I've read
where these "multiple" shots have had negative results - same as the "multiple" vaccines have had on our defenseless babies/children.
Giving that many in one shot makes your pet a guinea pig.
I'd do some research and ask several vets their opinion.
I have a chocolate and a yellow lab.
My male is chocolate ,and female is yellow. The female came from the country, and the male from someone that wasn't a breeder, but was into the pedigree thing. Both are AKC pure bred with papers.
My male is a classic case of over breeding. He has allergy problems that could have come from vaccinations, or over breeding, or both.
He is absolutely beautiful, and has a big block head you could set your drink on. But he is very puppy like ( my way of saying simple) in his adult life. I also don't know if this was from over breeding, or vaccinations.
Whenever my female went into heat, either he was too dumb to know what he was doing, or she wouldn't let him ( for whatever reason). Either way, it was probably natures way of saying, that's enough. We never got puppies.
I have not given him any more shots, and don't plan to. I do not do the heartworm thing either.
By comaprison, my female runs circles around him. She is a one in a million dog. She is called a "dudley lab" because she has pink eyelids, and nose, as opposed to black.
EVERY WAKING MOMENT is consumed with fetching and retrieving. They say that these type of dogs make the best "drug dogs" because of this incessant need to play fetch. She is the only dog I have ever been able to put key words into sentences, and have her understand exactly what I was saying.
When I used to take her to the lake as a puppy, she would lay all her toys (frisbee, stick, ball, etc) out in a semi circle, and then get behind them and look at me like which one you want to play with, just ask.
I can't even think of the day she will be gone. It breaks my heart. She is truly special.
I don't trust most vets as far as advice either. Do your own research.
There is no better dog than a lab IMHO. They have been the greatest companions anyone could ask for.
They need a lot of attention, and space to run around. They are NOT a potted plant that sits in the back yard all the time, and gets water occasionally. You will be adding a member to your family, and if you don't look at it that way, then it is probably best not to get one.
It is a big responsibility, not a novelty. Nothing more rewarding though.
Only have them fixed if you don't want to have puppies, and if you HAVE puppies, make sure that when it is time for them to go, that you are EXTRA picky about who you let have them.
I wish I could upload pictures as they are the coolest couple of dogs around.
Good luck...

My husband always says that you are just setting yourself up for heartbreak when you bring home a puppy. I can vouch for that.
This will be our "second child"
A playmate for our over energetic son. He or she will be loved like no other. I had a dog as a boy, and my wife had dogs/cats growing up too.

I would do the humane thing...
and get my next dog from one of these shelters. They are spayed or neutered, have their shots, trained, and waiting for someone or family to love.
Go there and see which one with which you make the connection & bond. Over the years we have taken dozens of "throw-away" dogs, brought them home and found homes for them. Not from a shelter, but from people who no longer wanted them and would have ended up in a shelter..
I was responding to the absolutely idiotic question about
whether he should get his dog fixed or not, not whether shelters are good places to adopt pets. They are. By all means the poster should get a shelter dog. Most shelters that euthanize don't want to and look forward to the day it becomes unnecessary.
Maybe if he pays for the operation up front, as required in most shelters, he'll get his dog fixed instead of letting him roam around (farther and farther, by the way, if the dog isn't fixed and can't find a mate) making more puppies that will only be abandoned or brought to shelters to be euthanized.
This is going to sound terribly cruel, but if he's so dumb he can't figure why his pet should be fixed, maybe he's the one who should be sterilized.
thank you,
but I am not a politician.

I use to work at an animal shelter
here in SC and I assure you it was nothing for them to put down 20 to 30 dogs and cats a week. Sad. Consider spay or neutering your pet. Personal choice and responsibility.
I agree with the posts below
The only thing I'd add is - strongly consider a lab mutt. Unless you plan to breed & show, a pedigree is purely bragging rights (I paid $1,000 for this dog and the dam & sire are champions, etc). My experience has been more health issues and shorter lifes with purebreds. You are also much more likely to find a lab mutt at a shelter. Be prepared for a year or so of hell with a lab pup, they are a somach with legs, and everything in their reach is food. The reason lab pups are so cute is so you don't kill them before they mature. Once they mature (and they will), there is no better dog. Oh Oh Oh ... unless you want to continuously play fetch, never (or allow anyone to) play fetch with your lab. Also, try to find a country vet - city vets care a lot more about transferring your wealth to them than caring for your pet.

Chocolate Lab! YES!
I have always had Labs and they are the best around children! I have an 8 yr old female black lab now and she is the most low key, well behaved dog you could ever want! I rescued her from the pound when she was 1 yr! Definitely spay her and get shots! There are too many unwanted pets in this world! Also I have mine on a radio collar and she is free to roam a 90ft perimeter..no lines to bury and it's portable! There is a series of beeps to warn her she is getting close to the perimiter. I have moved 4 times with this system for her and it works great!

Hi Jon. When I got my first
Hi Jon. When I got my first golden retriever I felt the same as you did. It only took 1 year to see the error of my ways. My dog was an indoor dog. I was told that I should let her go through her first season so that she would develop feminine features before I decided to spay her. This was absolutely not true. After her second season, I had had enough.
She was a house dog but I had to watch her carefully whenever I took her outside. The males came out of the woodwork. They prowled the house. My windows had muddy footprints from the feet of dogs looking inside my house. I had her spayed and she lived to be 16 years old.
But the main reason that I recommend spaying and neutering is like healthnut4freedom says. The sheer number of euthanasia's that occur every day and the number of unwanted and abused dogs that sit in shelters.
Also don't be afraid to get a male. If neutered, they are just as good a pet or even better than a female...almost more affectionate from my experience. A lab is a very good choice for a home with children. And you must also ask yourself what you will do with the dog when you will be out of town.
Whatever you decide, never ever get your puppy from a pet store, over the internet, or from an unknown breeder. Puppy mills are a curse and should be put out of business. Research them. They are horror chambers.
Your windows were muddy with footprints
My older neighbor lady warned me when I had a female German Shepard and a six feet high wooden fence, that the males would climb it to get to her. Of course, I didn't believe her until I seen a doberman climb over my fence into my yard and back over the fence when I chased him out. I had my 9mm if he started chasing me (I'm not neutered).
I think we should Sterilize

I never wanted a dog again
Why, the biggest reason, there are 15,000 unwanted pets destroyed in this country every day. Do not breed, do not buy, adopt !
My fully grown 45 y/o daughter thought it would be cute to get a little toy poodle to cuddle. Wrong, we have the dog now by default. He is 1 1/2 y/o, #10 and pure white like the driven snow, and a real show stopper. But he is very eccentric and I'm afraid if we gave him up, eventually he would euthanized.
Make sure you get the distemper and rabies shots and the heart worm pills year around.
I should have him neutered to keep from overpopulating and running across a street to a female getting hit by a car and killed (3x for me), but haven't. We just have to make sure we keep him fenced in. After all, I wouldn't want someone to cut my maleness off, would you ?
you will want to vaccinate
distemper and parvo still occur in unvaccinated dogs.
We've had dachshunds for 40 years
And I think females are the best. They are better natured and more lovable, at least in my opinion. We had a male doxie years ago and he was mean and bit a few kids. That doesn't mean that all male dogs are like that as I know many, many male dogs that are really nice but that's my opinion. It's true about getting them spayed when they're young as it will cut down on their chance of getting breast cancer. Labs are great dogs and I think you are making a good choice. Good luck on your new pup and the SPCA is a great place to look.

Hi Jon
Go to an animal shelter and watch how many animals are euthanized every day. It is tragic. You might be a responsible pet owner and not plan to breed your pet; however nature is much stronger. You leave that lovely Chocolate lab in the backyard and when she is in season every male intact dog for miles will be leaping the fence to have at her. Also, female dogs are messy in season.
ANOTHER big reason to spay a female is breast cancer. Breast cancer is highly likely in dogs who were not spayed as pups. I had a little shihtzu that we got at a year old. She had not been spayed and she was in season. We spayed her but it was too late. When she was 13 she developed breast cancer when in every other way she was incredibly healthy. She hiked miles with us and loved life. It was tragic. Several vets I talked to said it was because of her exposure to estrogen and not being spayed.
Don't feel bad about it. Your pet will be healthy and a wonderful companion. I have a black lab. She is the most amazing friend. You are doing the dog population a favor by spaying.

Unless you're planning to raise puppies, it is wise to get your pets neutered.
