When the populace become "Pirates" they elect those that reflect their values.
This actually started on another thread which proposed that for the past 8 years the government has become corrupt and has lead the people down the wrong road. I believe it is the other way around and unless we understand that, we will not be working as effectively as we might to change things.
We can actually go back further than 8 years to see horrifying and corrupt actions of the US Govt. I remember during the Clinton administration there was the big uproar over Elian Gonzales. On the day that the swat team broke down the door with their guns drawn and kidnapped that child from law abiding citizens..... it was all over the news. I was sitting in an airport. I was sick to my stomach reading the article and looking at the pictures of that terrified child with an automatic rifle pointed at him. I thought to myself, "well, it is not significant that the government DID this because that is what governments DO. What will be significant will be whether the populace ACCEPTS this or demands prosecutions". Needless to say..... the populace did nothing .... after all the stock market was doing well and portfolios were growing by leaps and bounds....so why rock the boat. At that point I knew that the country was officially over because the PEOPLE had given tacit approval of this police state action.
When a society as a whole rejects it's moral compass, prefers the immediate unearned pleasure to the long term pleasure that must be earned, prefers stealing goods from one's neighbor rather than working for one's own livelihood, prefers the convenience of immediate pleasure over the responsibilities of family, prefers eliminating unwanted children or elders as too much trouble, and prefers to allow others to do the "thinking" for them, in effect that society leads itself into extinction preferring a culture of death over a culture of life...... At that point, the society itself sets the tone and ELECTS LEADERS LIKE THEMSELVES.
This is a bottom up phenomenon that we are seeing now, not a top down. Of course evil will entice the weaker nature of man into this position, but it is the choices that a society has made for generations that determine it's course.
This is why educating the masses to Libertarian thinking, and respect for the rights of every individual over the theft of the collective is going to be a long-term task. What we are trying to do is turn society's direction back to the only truly moral course. That of the freedom of the individual over the collective. We must make OUR philosophy "the norm" of thought.
I think that if we see it this way we can see a whole different picture of our purpose. Instead of continually banging our heads against the political machine, we would see that the way to change the politicians is to change public perception and social mood so that they will ONLY elect Constitution minded Libertarians to office.
But this is a tough and long road...... so we get tempted to point upward and shake our fist instead of looking at those around us and working one on one to change minds and hearts. This is why I get much more encouraged when people are giving needed information to the uneducated masses (like at the recent Tea Parties..... gather a bunch of ignorant sheep in one place and hand them info while their minds are sitting there vacant) than when they are screaming at the politicians. Educate, Educate, Educate in order to change the country and the world.
It is the PEOPLE that must change their outlook and their demands upon their elected officials. THEN we will get different people elected. WHAT THE COUNTRY HAS BECOME IS WHAT THE POPULACE HAS WANTED! Clinton and Bush and Obama were elected because THEY ARE what the country has BECOME - not the other way around. We have become a nation of killers, thieves, liars and con-men..... a nation of PIRATES.
So again.... this is a project that MUST be worked from the bottom and move up.... Replacing those at the top will ONLY be possible if the people DEMAND it.

When the slaves become pirates, eh?
Since our elected in BOTH major parties find Corporations what they prefer to represent, who together, appear to have come to the conclusion, that this world is not big enough for we the people, and corporations don't need people as consumers, when they have representatives as consumers, we the people are not left behind, we have become what corporations and politicians are blaming. After all, corporations are made by, of and for people, eh? So people are the problem, not the corporations, who after hurting people, gets a second life with the people tax money... God blass the corporations, may they live to eternity in the name of the people....who are slaves, now deemed pirates, eh?
WE ARE GOING TO WIN!

Better Yet............
When a population becomes Unconciounable Barbarians, they elect politicians that reflect their values. or Populations that are sheep beget wolves as their leaders.
Interestingly..... 40 years ago my dad told me.....
"Rome got invaded by the "barbarians". But we are creating our OWN barbarians to take down our country".....

elviejo, you and rp1 state the problem
clearly. It's much easier and more fun to just hate Bush & Obama, but they are just symptoms of a lazy or corrupt populace.
It's that huge job of education and inspiration RP has been working on diligently for so many years. Knowing his patience helps me stay a bit calmer, patient but determined.
Great thoughts but...
I like the way you think Elvie but you're missing a big part of the truth here, and that is that a lot of Americans aren't immoral, but they are hopeful idiots, which has the same effect. They have a basic unshakable trust in their government and therefore let it get away with anything. There are even a lot of educated, sophisticated people who have this mindset.
What you cite is definitely on the money, but it's no greater problem than the hopeful idiot problem. We need to address both.
Yes, there are a lot of hopeful idiots......
but having "unshakable trust in their government and therefore letting it get away with anything" is the problem. They CHOSE not to THINK, they CHOSE not to be DIFFERENT, they CHOSE not to stand out from the crowd or "rock the boat" and therefore allow mass murder, torture, police brutality, infanticide, genetic engineering, euthanasia, etc..... that they wouldn't do THEMSELVES.... but are too lazy or cowardly to object to from their government.
If they allow "hope" to take the place of their MORAL COMPASS then they are just as culpable. Torture is WRONG, mass murder is WRONG, theft is WRONG. If a society allows these things because EVEN THOUGH they know that THEY shouldn't do these things, they wont pass judgement on their government, they are guilty too. THANKS for the good input.

The point is...
The point is that many might agree with us on basic principles, but don't recognize how far from those principles America is (Randians come to mind). They need a different kind of "education" than the kind you were originally referring to.

Too Right
The average American voter is venal, larcenous, and cowardly. Too many people want to hurt other people, take their stuff, and let their armed goons take all the risks for their perfidy.
It's all well and good for brave men like Ron Paul and Peter Schiff to make a public noise above the din of statism, but we must do our part as well. Resolve to never let a statist cliche go unanswered. If you vocally disagree with what "everybody knows" you immediately put the lie to that particular superstition. If you disagree, then clearly, not "everybody" believes it.
Refuse to use their candy coated euphemisms. A draft, or conscription, or mandatory registration, or community service -- are all different ways of saying "slavery". Save some time, and maybe save a few lost souls, and just call slavery what it is.
Slavery is slavery. Don't call it national service.
Theft is theft. Don't call it revenue enhancement.
Mass murder is mass murder. Don't call it shock and awe.
Kidnapping is kidnapping. Don't call it protective custody.
Stupid is stupid. Don't call it naivete or innocence.
Evil is evil. Don't call it a sacrament of a sacrifice.

Why don't we want to see the obvious
I hope you don't mind me quoting you because you say it like it is, well put.
When they wouldn't let us see the news in Iraq [embedded news persons no photos of the fallen soldiers,or blown up baby's] I knew someone was making money because it wasn't about the truth!
One thing about the truth is...
Truth doesn't have to hide..
anybody that tells you different probably shouldn't be trusted.
Our next question should be what don't you want us to see???
Check the contributions and you will see why a country that was based on fair is taxing the little guy and giving away our tax dollars to the already rich
One you missed?
Involuntary TAXES = THEFT
We now have courts that will not let a jury listen to a tax argument?
Just want what seems to be missing, Truth and Justice for ALL
Quote on, comrade
Everything I post is for the widest possible distribution. Unless you see a statement of copyright on the title page, please feel free to quote me endlessly. There is no limit to the amount of stroking that my ego can soak up.

Good idea.... sort of Libertarian "shorthand"

I believe the NWO is terrified of pirates.
This is obvious by their recent dog-and-pony show in the media.
If you think about it, it makes perfect sense. The empire runs on oil and money. The ocean is huge, and very hard to track, even with modern satellite and GPS technology.
There was a prominent pirate in Atlas Shrugged who was a modern terror of the seas.

In this case.....
the "Pirates" are not the good guys. I mean the pirates who refer to "Our Oil", and kill men, women and children on "our" way to getting "our oil".
Pirates..... argh! I could almost hear Bush singing "I am a Pirate King" (from Pirates of Penzance) and the populace dancing behind him.
