Swine flu empties Mexico City's churches, streets

MEXICO CITY - Churches stood empty Sunday in heavily Roman Catholic Mexico City after services were canceled, and health workers screened airports and bus stations for people sickened by a new strain of swine flu that experts fear could become a global epidemic.

Mayor Marcelo Ebrardo said two more people died of swine flu overnight in the overcrowded capital, and three other deaths are suspected to have been caused by the strain. Another 73 more people were hospitalized with influenza, possible swine flu.

City Health Secretary Armando Ahued said most of the fatalities involve victims who only sought medical help after the disease was well advanced and urged people to seek urgent care

President Felipe Calderon has assumed new powers to isolate people infected with the deadly swine flu strain that health officials say has killed up to 86 people and likely sickened about 1,400 in the country since April 13.

The flu has spread beyond Mexico's borders with 20 confirmed cases in five U.S. states and suspected cases as far away as New Zealand.

British passengers screened for swine flu amid fears that disease has spread worldwide

British passengers returning from Mexico were being screened for signs of swine flu on Sunday night amid fears that the disease has spread across the world.

Two travellers were admitted to a hospital in Scotland when they complained of flu-like symptoms after returning from holiday in the country.

Alan Johnson, the Health Secretary, said Britain was on "constant alert" after the previously unknown influenza spread from Mexico to America and cases were reported as far afield as New Zealand, France, Spain, Israel and Canada.

WASHINGTON (AP) - U.S. officials will begin asking travelers about illness if they're entering the country from areas with confirmed swine flu.

Passengers won't be barred from getting into the United States. But they could be referred for further testing.

Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano characterized the step as more "passive surveillance," saying airline workers certainly could tell people they shouldn't fly if ill.

She spoke at a White House news conference Sunday.

As someone below was so kind enough to mention, this already happened in 1976!!! President Ford made everyone get inoculations, many of those people suffered paralysis, and the inoculations were stopped--then the epidemic was swept under the rug.

So, in summary, Ford made Big Pharm millions!

CDC says too late to contain U.S. flu outbreak

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said on Friday it was too late to contain the swine flu outbreak in the United States.

CDC acting director Dr. Richard Besser told reporters in a telephone briefing it was likely too late to try to contain the outbreak, by vaccinating, treating or isolating people.

"There are things that we see that suggest that containment is not very likely," he said.

EXTRA: Influenza death toll rises to 81 in Mexico

Mexico City - The death toll from a spreading wave of influenza in Mexico has climbed to 81, Health Minister Jose Angel Cordova Villalobos said Saturday evening. Twenty of the lethal infections have been definitively linked to the newly emerging strain of swine flu, he said. All told, 1,324 people have been admitted to hospital for examination.

In the United States, 11 non-lethal cases of a similar strain of influenza have been identified by the Centres for Disease Control, with tests pending on another 10 cases.

The Geneva-based World health Organization declared the outbreak of swine flu in Mexico and the United States a "public health emergency of international concern."
