Swine Flu - A Distraction?
The oh-so-trustworthy media has jumped on this so-called pandemic with an intense fervor, and it clear that we here on DailyPaul have as well as it dominates the active forum topics. Not to minimize the tragedy of those who have lost their lives, but we are talking about a very small number of deaths and cases. While this outbreak could certainly spread, it does not justify the outright panic that is occurring. The death rate of those infected is not actually all that incredibly high, and it appears that will good medical service (which is readily available in our country), chances of fatality are quite low.
I think we need to step back a moment and really think about this situation. We know that the media would like nothing better than to pull the wool over our eyes. I see a couple distinct possibilities regarding this outbreak:
1) It will be used to enact martial law or enforced vaccinations. This is, of course, the prevailing theory here on Daily Paul as we love to consider such dictatorial conspiracy theories (and not without good reason), but in our own efforts to discuss this line of reasoning, we are playing into their hands by whipping up FUD (fear, uncertainty, and doubt).
2) It is a distraction to get our mind off important matters. Think about it. In the last two weeks, we have seen unprecedented interest in the Federal Reserve and wanton government spending. The Audit the Fed bill was getting a huge influx of support. Now, suddenly people are no longer paying attention to this important matter as everyone panics over what is at this point a trivial outbreak.
We must not lose focus here. We must not allow this to dissuade us from our plans or our vital efforts to restore freedom to this country.
I recommend we let this swine flu story fade and focus on the very important tasks of hand: keeping pressure and heat on our government officials.

I'm of two minds on this. My X father-in-law has been hospitalized since Friday in really bad shape.. I guess he got an infection that has spread from his kidneys to his pancreas to his heart. He is in San Antonio, retired military/civil service. Again, he was in tough shape in the first place.. nothing ~flu~ related. Just age.
Today he has been moved from the hospital WITH THE EQUIPMENT that is keeping him alive to his house. They moved him from the hospital because a flu is going around there and they think if he catches it from the hospital then he will probably not make it.
This is just odd.. I've never heard of moving someone like that.
So while I'm maintaining a healthy sceptisism here, I'm starting to worry.

I think this is a "Cry Wolf" strategy. They are overplaying the threat of swine flu so that when a real epidemic occurs, people will redicule the threat and ignore the warnings. This way the sheeple will not run from the wolf the next time he comes around.

I believe this is indeed a distraction of sorts or a scare tactic to vaccinate for next year's season or...(fill in the blank).

Yes, exactly. The numbers being reported with this outbreak are not exactly staggering. Yes, there is another outbreak of influenza, but it does not appear to be something any worse than any other outbreak -- certainly not enough to warrant this kind of panic.
I do not trust the media, and if they think this is an important subject, I will look elsewhere for the really important news.

Dr. Richard Besser, acting director of the Centers of Disease Control and Prevention, said that so far the disease in the United States seems less severe than the outbreak in Mexico, where more than 1,600 cases have been reported and where the suspected death toll has climbed to 149. No deaths have been reported in the U.S, and only one hospitalization.
"I wouldn't be overly reassured by that," Besser told reporters at CDC's headquarters in Atlanta. He raised the possibility of more severe cases in the United States.

UNITED NATIONS, April 27 (Reuters) - The world must make sure that poorer countries hit hard by other crises do not have to bear the brunt of any possible swine flu pandemic, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said on Monday.
"The swine flu outbreak shows yet again that, in our interconnected world, no nation can deal with threats of such dimension on its own," Ban told reporters.
He added that if the swine flu outbreak becomes a pandemic, global solidarity will be crucial.
"Poorer nations are especially vulnerable," he said. "They have been hit hard by other crises this year -- food, energy, the global economy, climate change. We must ensure that they are not also hit disproportionately hard by a potential health crisis."
He said that the World Bank and other U.N. development and humanitarian agencies would "mobilize to ensure that countries needing additional financial resources to combat an epidemic will have them."
