GENEVA, April 28 (Reuters) - The WHO said on Tuesday it awaited formal confirmation from U.S. authorities the new swine flu virus has spread significantly between people, a sign that could indicate an "imminent" influenza pandemic.
Confirmation infected people in two countries are spreading the new disease to their families or contacts in a sustained way would meet the World Health Organisation's criteria for declaring a phase 5 alert on its scale of 1 to 6.
The United Nations agency raised its pandemic alert level to phase 4 from phase 3 on Monday as the virus spread to Europe.
The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said on Monday some people who have had contact with confirmed cases were also developing flu-like symptoms.
"It appears, and I think we're still awaiting for a final confirmation from the U.S. authorities, but it appears that there's a number of cases in New York which appear to be human-to-human transmission," WHO spokesman Gregory Hartl told a news briefing.
Such secondary transmission of the virus was "probable", he later told reporters, adding: "If we have a confirmation from the United States or Canada, we could move to phase 5."
The emergency committee which recommended moving to phase 4 late on Monday -- a "turning point", according to Hartl -- was not scheduled to meet on Tuesday. But its experts could be convened at any time to make such decisions.
People have occasionally caught swine flu from a pig but it has stopped there. Avian influenza has occasionally spread from one person to just one other person and stopped there.
But the new H1N1 flu appears to be spreading beyond that limited chain, which is what worries the WHO.

ATLANTA (AP) - A U.S. health official said at least five people are hospitalized with swine flu in the United States and deaths are likely.
"I fully expect we will see deaths from this infection," as swine flu cases are investigated, said Richard Besser, acting director of the federal Centers for Disease Control. He said he did not know about a newspaper report of two deaths in two southern California hospitals in which the victims seemed to be suffering from swine flu symptoms.

As isolated outbreaks of swine flu continue to be confirmed around the world, with new cases reported today in Canada, Israel, France, New Zealand, Costa Rica and South Korea, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger proclaimed a state of emergency and the White House asked Congress for an additional $1.5 billion to fight the outbreak.
The emergency proclamation orders all state agencies and employees to provide all possible assistance to the Department of Public Health, authorizes that department to enter any necessary contracts for materials and services to combat the outbreak, makes it easier to purchase materials and waives some certification requirements for public health laboratories.

I had the Asian Flu in 1957, I remember being out of it for over three weeks half dead on the couch.
Mom had the Spanish influenza back in 1917-18, and they put her with the dead people, and later found out she wasn't.
I've had enough vaccinations in the military, and if I'm not dead by now (66) you have nothing to fear, but fear itself. I even had vaccinations for anthrax and bubonic plague. One of the shots, said, "gold" ?

If you were in all three Fleet Marine Force Divisions on over a dozen ships and a jet from Cuba to Vietnam though the Panama Canal to China, you too would know how it feels to get vaccinations with an air gun every-time you bent over, instead of a needle.
At what level do they start trying to force-vaccinate?

However...aren't they saying there IS no vaccine and there won't be one for months?
4-6 months is the minimum time to develop a vaccine...
for a completely new virus such as this. How protective and safe will it be? Then, there is what kind of vaccine will work best: live vs. attenuated, vs. heat killed vs. subunit. Mass production and delivery and what will it do in different patient populations: young, old, ethnicity, immune status, etc. This is a very involved and time consuming process.
Look at HIV and malaria. 10s of Billions of dollars invested and nothing even close yet.

But with my luck, Mom having had the Spanish Influenza, and I, the Asian Flu; according to research I more than likely have acquired anti-bodies that protect me.
What use is it having a pandemic if you can't participate ?
