Ohio scholar reports bias against 'Darwin doubters'
http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20090502/N...
Jerry Bergman is a mild-mannered, soft-spoken, and balding college professor, author, and member of Mensa - a group of people whose IQs are in the top 2 percent of the population.
He also is a man on a mission, going about his task with the same tenacity as a pit bull in attack mode.
For the last 30 years, Mr. Bergman, 62, has interviewed hundreds of people in academia and documented cases in which he contends that careers were derailed because of doubts about evolution.
The results of his interviews and research are compiled in his latest book, Slaughter of the Dissidents: The Shocking Truth about Killing the Careers of Darwin Doubters, published last fall by Leafcutter Press.
The students, professors, and scientists suffered not because they were advocating the teaching of biblical Creationism or Intelligent Design, he said, but for questioning or debating aspects of Charles Darwin's famous theory.
It's an issue Mr. Bergman takes personally.
"In 1979, I was let go by Bowling Green State University openly due to my increasing disillusion with Darwinism," he said in a lecture Monday night at WLMB-TV, Channel 40, Toledo's Christian television station. The two-hour program was filmed before a studio audience of 60 and will be broadcast at a later date, according to Jamey Schmitz, WLMB's president and CEO.
Mr. Bergman has nine academic degrees, including a doctorate in education from Wayne State University, and currently teaches at Northwest State Community College in Archbold, Ohio, and the University of Toledo's Health Science campus.
In 35 years as an educator, Mr. Bergman has taught college-level courses in biology, microbiology, chemistry, biochemistry, genetics, pathology, anthropology, geology, and statistics, among other subjects, and has published more than 800 academic papers.
He also made a gradual transition from atheism to Christianity after studying the Bible and comparing its explanation for human existence to that offered by scientific rationale - including evolution and neo-Darwinism, he said.
When he tells people that doubting Darwinism can lead to discrimination in universities, Mr. Bergman said he gets two responses, neither sympathetic to his cause: "First, it's not happening. Second, yes it's happening and it should be happening."
"It's unlikely today that an out-of-the-closet Darwin doubter will survive in academia," he said.
And there's much at stake because a PhD requires a huge investment in time and money, averaging nine years of school and $300,000 and $500,000 in costs, he said.
Rather than risk losing everything over one's personal beliefs, Mr. Bergman said he advises people to "stay in the closet until things change" and to seek change through legislation.
free speech and scholarly debate in academia are being stifled by just a handful of "Darwinian fundamentalists."

Whether you believe in God
Whether you believe in God or evolution, its the lack of academic freedom that I find to be the worst part of this whole report. No academic freedom=no critical thinking. That is the biggest crime of all here.

As A Christian, If there is no God, I've lost nothing
As an Atheist, and there is a God, I've lost everything.
Personally, I would reverse that.
As an atheist I have looked, and found, answers to many questions that would never have happened if I believed in God or a god. When one designates a being as all knowing and all seeing there is nothing left to know or see expect the word of God. I have found that word sadly lacking. Recognizing for instance, the potential power that a religion can have over you by claiming that you can only lose by not following it. How can one be so sure that there aren't alternative motives? Just asking that question would label me a disciple of the devil...how convenient for religion!
This is interesting.
There is a great deal of evidence to support evolution, but at the core one must prove that life evolved from a non-life soup.
The evidence shows that the probability for such a sequence to randomly appear is staggeringly slim to basically impossible. I think it is something like one in a billion chance.
It makes one pause.
Additionally, evolution breaks at least one scientific axiom. The law of entropy.
The introduction of the conscience is the one that gets me. How did that evolve? It is not even a physical thing.

Darwin did have his own doubts
This is illustrated point blank in his book the origin of life, where he says himself the complexity of the eye can not be explained by evolution.

Very interesting. There are
Very interesting.
There are many different thoughts on this topic here at DP an in our revolution in general. The best thing about it, though, is as Ron Paul says "Freedom is Popular" and that brings us all together working for the same cause.
...
my opinion
freedom may be popular but most people dont want to be free. why be free to fail? or be free and starve? for most people, better the devil you know than the devil you dont.
You've made several threads
You've made several threads now as simple, quite tasteless, veiled attempts at preaching/evangelizing particularly aimed at atheists. In case you didn't notice yet, they don't exactly work too well.
I don't know if you are prohibited to preach to your flock in some way and make up for it by doing it here, but I recommend you stick with them, they might respect you.
At the moment your behaviour is nothing different from that of a troll and I will therefor consider you as one.

You are one of the few who think as much I am sure. Your post I see as a troll attmpt or just a biased attack take you pick.
Either way your assult does nothing to diminish the validity and shear weight of the information presented in the OP.

Firing college professors?
Firing college professors? what happend to academic freedom and peer review? what happend to science! I wonder if this zealousness for evolution on the part of colleges has anything to do with them getting grants from rockefeller foundation. were the teachers fired so the colleges income was not threatened? alex jones recently had a college professor on from the biggest christian school in texas . he taught his class they had to pass on the principles contained in the constitution and bill of rights and the next day he was called into the principles office where he was questioned by a guy from de faderland. the head of the school was scared actually shaking he said. the interogator told him you will not speak about those things again and the head of the school went along. as i remember the proffesor said the school was worried about hmm science? no. academic freedom ? no $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ If it dont make sense thiers a buck in it!
Interesting the guy is in the top 2% of the population and is a creationist. So much for creationists being ignorant huh? The smartest guy in the world is a creationist named gerhard derks. he got saved when he was trying to build a human brain.
lets here it for the academic inquisitors. As blind as a bat comin in backwards.

Round-earth doubters
There's a tremendous bias against round-earth doubters. Gravity doubters too. Just mention the fact that the theory of gravity is only a theory, and see what kind of flak you get.
However, I wouldn't put much stock in the fact that the guy is in Mensa. I was a member for a year. I thought that I might meet some interesting women at the parties. That right there proves that being in Mensa and being dead wrong are not mutually exclusive.
Question: Why do you folks (on both sides) keep stirring this pot on Daily Paul? If it's not trolling, pray tell what is it?
Its about free speech!
Its about political correctness
its about acedemic honesty
its about Truth
Besides all that Macro Evolution is just plain stupid!

Isn't He (darwin) That Monkey Guy
you mean this monkey business is being forced upon people?
I mean, really?
... ... ...
Love this line, also goes with the skulls that they think they've found in determining this monkey belief. That we have slowly evolved into what we are now.

Well since there is ample
Well since there is ample evidence that even Darwin himself doubted evolution near the time of his death, it would seem a very reasonable thing to question.
Ron Paul 2012 - It's Almost Here!
No there's not. There is no
No there's not. There is no evidence of that at all.
I would like to see this
I would like to see this ample evidence you say you have. Because I havent found anything at all in his writings or letters that would indicate that he had any doubts near the time of his death.
For the doubters here...
(not that I am one if them) evidence, please? BTW, I believe it is a reasonable thing to question evolution indeed, but Darwin's own doubts would just be icing on the cake.

Well well well darwinists have to do the same.

Big Boom has nothing to do
Big Boom has nothing to do with Darwinian evolution. And evolution offers no explanation for the first formation of organic life or the start of the universe, it could just as well be a creator god that did that.
What evolution does is explain how the gradual changes in living organisms happened that produced such a wide variety of life on this planet.
The example I really like to use are dogs, look at what artificial selection did in just the last few thousand years, what humans were able to accomplish, its not that hard to see that a process like this could easily happen if there were millions of years of available time.

Do you really think that
Do you really think that evolution says that a dog will just give birth to a cat?
Really? I never thought people were that stupid.
On the other hand looking at Bush I can sort of see how this could come about...
Neither have I
Not only has nobody seen this happen, nobody has ever claimed that this happened either. If you think that that's what evolution is about, then no wonder you think it's false.
