(CNN) - The son of former Republican presidential hopeful Rep. Ron Paul said Monday that he is primed to mount a bid for the Kentucky Senate seat currently occupied by GOP Sen. Jim Bunning.
"I am very serious about running for Sen. Bunning's seat if he decides not to run," 46-year-old Rand Paul told CNN.
"Until he makes a final pronouncement, I'm trying not to do anything formally but I'm very close to making a decision."

Bunning's spokesman told CNN
he is planning to run for re-election in 2010.
So I'm not too excited yet.
Tactical Note
What Rand's doing should help to keep the GOP from putting up someone else, or pressuring Bunning to quit, since they may prefer Bunning to Rand.
Further, if the local GOP have time to get used to the idea, they may fall behind Rand rather than fight him, the way they would have a few months ago.
However, I doubt the upper GOP would like to see Rand succeed...

This could be...
This could be just the thing to get the revolution excited again. We need some more enthusiasm and excitement. We can easily raide enough money for Rand, that's no doubt. But we need to get on the ball and get to work to help him with whatever we can do. He knows he has the backing of the Revolution, once he makes his decision he will call out to us telling us what he needs.
Ok, now I'm really excited.
I haven't been this excited since his dad's run. You guys ready to get it going again?
HELL YES I AM!!!!!!!!!!
BRING IT ON!
If they want MY vote, they need to tell me why they are better than the other guy, not why the other guy is worse than they are.
Thanks for the link Michael
If the race happens, it may be between more than Grayston and Paul, we will see. In any case I read elsewhere about a 6 m USD one day moneybomb. It will be a tough race and Grayston has the advantage of being in the state politics, though not for long and may probably be favored by some mainstream Republicans, we will see. Dr. Paul with the Kentucky taxpayers association as well as with countless RNC conferences and involvement in two national races (1988 and 2008) has some political experience and he is about 8 years older than Grayston.
Rand Paul does it exactly right, start preparing with speeches throughout the past weeks, but never pushy or arrogant and does not announce an exploratory committee before Bunning has announced anything. But he is ready, so the moment Bunning would announce he is not running (on the 9th? or later), he can drop in.
He should see if he can get the endorsement of the Club for Growth and various others, local. Perhaps his father can facilitate the endorsement of a KY congressman or two? Gary Johnson, barry Goldwater, Murray Sabrin etc. can campaign.
They should also do a precise geographical profile of where the strengths and weaknesses lie in KY of Dr. Paul's primary votes last year and concentrate on the "weak" areas. LP, CP, Independents and perhaps Greens and Democrats that voted for or wanted to vote for Paul, should all change their registration to Republican ASAP. The campaign should be planned and organized from a professional level. He would need a great and dynamic campaign adviser and make very effective ads. A positive campaign would be the best, but all investigation into the strengths and weaknesses of the opponents be made to use this in ads (without being personal) and also debates. Maybe the primary race would be the toughest. If he - God willing - wins, I think the senate race with
the Democrat may be not so difficult, although the guy would be a tough competitor and Bunning won twice with a slim margin. Rand Paul can stand on his father's shoulder, he already has name recognition ebcause of his father, and if elected as the next senator, Dr. Paul's national standing will also be greatly further enhanced. This could be the snowball effect to catapult a successful 2012 presidential bid...
At the same time this whole process will also be a test of how certain "mainstream Republicans" are really open to going back to the GOP roots with success, e.g. if Mitch McConnel & Co would react for some way very negative towards Paul, they can expect blowback and proof they are not interested in a big tent party. Generally, I think the mood should be now much better than last year. I think Rand has his father's calm, rational and kind personality, which will attract anyone, even if you disagree and if one can relate to someone personally, you are also much more open to his ideas.
NOT ENOUGH
we need several hundred patriots to run for Congress and Senate otherwise it's just a joke......

There are always tons of 3rd
There are always tons of 3rd party candidates running, we just don't win. The laws are against us and we need more money. Haven't you been paying attention? Rand Paul, Debra Medina, RJ Harris, Dr. Mike Vasovski, maybe Peter Schiff, Adam Kokesh, and maybe BJ Lawson are running for a place in the Federal Government.

well
there will only be a few senate races in 2010, so hundreds cannot apply. Sarah Steelman may run in Missouri vs Roy Blunt and I think she would be much closer to Dr. Paul (her parents were Goldwater supporters and father played an important role as chairman of local GOP). There are also races in CO, PA, TX etc. We should see if quite a lot can run for congress, where they can, e.g. not as LP, CP...perhaps in a certain district an Independent can win? but I think only Bernie Sanders has won as Indy in recent history (and Ventura as governor of third party. In Minnesota they could run under Independence Party platform, maybe Dean Barkley and others. Their candidates have scored almost always in double digits, so they do not have the label of a fringe/very small political party. I think people like Sharon Reinier should perhaps switch from D to R and run in that race (she almost won in 2006 with only little money against the R).
