The military and all powers that be use the opiate of the masses for control. Armies need to be controlled and preoccupied during peacetime to keep them from disintegrating before they're needed in battle. Over the years the use of cigarettes, booze, women, sports and even religion have been "offerred" to soldiers for their use, for free.
The military had to be sued to keep religion from being forced on soldiers. Before that the head Chaplain of the military said they " “reserve the right to evangelize the unchurched,”
I experienced this when I was in the miltary. The AIr Force more specifically. If I wasn't in church on Sunday i was harassed and asked If I believed in God. I was supposed to be learning engineering but was forced to listen to stories called the "gospel" that completely contradicted reality and the science our studies were rooted in.
Why would they do that in a "free" country?
Let's let our chaplains lay and clear minefields with God's help.
This is ridiculous. Our soldiers are being sent there to kill people, not give them Bibles. It's like these guys think they're actually doing something for the afghan people by praying for them or giving them gifts of Bibles. Maybe if they gave them a copy of "Evolution of Species" or an issue of Playboy, I could see that, but a Bible, that is so out of line. Maybe instead of discussing their faith with an afghani they should stick to seducing their women. I mean come on...visiting sick people in a hospital...shouldn't they just get busy killing these people instead?
I wish these idiots would just blindly follow the orders of their government and prosecute this illegal war, instead of living out their faith. Don't they know their place? Somehow they act as if their orders and the constitution can be overruled by the commands of God. They just need to suck it up and conform like the rest of us.

You can't go by just the footage of the incident that Al Jezeera elected to show. The chaplain went on to inform the soldier that he could not distribute the bibles. This from Huffington Post:
"That specific case involved a soldier who brought in a donation of translated Bibles that were sent to his personal address by his home church. He showed them to the group and the chaplain explained that he cannot distribute them," said Major Jennifer Willis.
"The translated Bibles were never distributed as far as we know, because the soldier understood that if he distributed them he would be in violation of general order 1, and he would be subject to punishment."
UPDATE: A defense official tells the Huffington Post that the preacher did not mean that soldiers should hunt for Afghani souls, but was speaking in general terms. He also said that the Pashtun and Dari Bibles were confiscated so that they could not be distributed to the population.

*** OMG!!! This is NOT appropriate policy or behavior for our military! We are in a country that is Islamic in faith and need to respect others religious rights! I am sick of this 'American and Christian Exceptionalist' attitude!! It is this same attitude that allows the killing of millions of civilians...women and children included... in large horrific numbers to be acceptable , allows the torture apologists to sleep at night...because people of different faith or race are somehow expendable...and not even worthy for pause or headline? I am sick of this attitude.

It is not clear if the presence of the Bibles and exhortations for soldiers to be "witnesses" for Jesus continues, but they were filmed a year ago despite regulations by the U.S. military's Central Command that expressly forbid "proselytising of any religion, faith or practice".
"Yes, that is the same sentiments as expressed in our Consitution, as well. These guys are NOT "soldiers for Jesus" once they don the uniforms of our military, they are just plain soldiers, soldiers who happen to be chaplains. "
"One reason is that it is against regulations and liable to cause division among the ranks. Another very important reason is that the perception that U.S. forces were attempting to spread Christianity, over and against the local Islamic faith, will very likely end in the Muslims turning against our presence there in self-defense."

You fail to realize that Christianity encompasses all of a believer's life. Just because a Christian puts on a military uniform does not prohibit him from expressing his beliefs. To insist that he should do otherwise is to impose another religious belief upon him (humanism). Sure, as military personnel of the U.S., those troops would probably be more effective in their ministry to the Afghans if they passed out Bibles when out of uniform. However, they have every right to profess their Christian beliefs while in uniform as they would out of uniform should the occasion arise, especially the chaplains. After all, they are American Christians, not Christian Americans.

Thanks for sharing that. I still see nothing wrong with military Christians overseas reaching out to Afghans with gospel truth and Bibles. Is that not better than killing them in the name of democracy?

No, that's not my point, and I don't think that is even the issue here. Those Christians in uniform understand they are not getting paid to spread their beliefs in Afghanistan. What you saw in the video was their devotion time off-duty to minister to the Afghans (except for the chaplain). There's nothing wrong with that. Being a member of the military does not excuse a Christian from sharing his beliefs wheresoever God may send him. If you were a Christian, you would understand that better. The U.S. government has no right to force Christians to act like secular humanists by refraining them from expressing their beliefs in public.
