COMPUTER TRICKS Every Daily Pauler Should Know!
In the battle we are waging, if information is our ammunition, then the computer is our weapon. Therefore, it would stand to reason the level of our effectiveness is in some degree affected by the level of our collective computer skills. This thread is set up to be an exchange of ideas to raise our skill level by posting tricks, tips and techniques.
Two of my favorite tricks are:
1. Tab browsing - Just about all browsers support this feature which greatly speeds up the navigation of the internet. If you are working on a slow computer you might want to look in to this, it can dramatically increase your speed and pleasure.
2. Multiple windows - If you are composing a tread or reply but need links or info from another site, you might want to create multiple windows. This helps organize the procedure as well as speed up the process.
My guess is, this site has a wide range of computer skills, many of which are much greater than mine!

Encrypt your system drive
Go to http://www.truecrypt.org/ and download TrueCrypt. Read the documentation first, then use it to encrypt your hard drive, especially your system drive. Put a really long password on it too. Then, every time windows boots up, you will have to enter in your long password before windows logs in. Whenever you leave your home, shut your computer off. If the cops or feds ever come to take it, don't worry, cause anything on your hard drive that might be used against you in a court of law will be safe. They will not be able to break in.
Warning: Please read up on this and learn what you are doing 1st. I've only scratched the surface. I don't yet know how to send encrypted e-mails, other than using hushmail, but i do want to learn how to secure my communications. I like privacy.
RSS
Learn how to use an RSS reader and aggregate news from your favorite websites.
I aggregate over 200 different newsfeeds into my FeedDemon reader - www.newsgator.com
THAT IS NEAT
A similiar trick is to use Google Alerts which will keep up a constant search on the net for the key words of your choice which will be sent to your email.
Comp tip
One thing I do fairly often is select a bunch of text I want and copy it to notepad. It's quick and easy to do.
Windows+R, notepad, Enter, Alt+Tab, Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C, Alt+Tab, Ctrl+V
Can save info from web pages, comments that might change, etc...
The thing I use it for most though, is my own writings on a website. Too many times I've spent a good lenghth of time creating a post/comment/idea and then when clicking "Submit" the site crashes, or the computer, or browser crashes or something. Just copy/paste what you're working on into notepad and you'll never lose those hours of thought again.
I also use it on some websites to put together rebuttals where the conversation and who said what when gets twisted (often on purpose). Copy/Paste quotes from who you're speaking with and put it all together with rebuttals in notepad then copy/paste it into whatever conversation.
Edit: whoops, surrounded some text in greaterthan/lessthan symbols heh.
I only want one thing. How to get ride of those
gross stomach and chin bulges constantly in my face on yahoo when I check my email. It is just disgusting and I want them to go away!!!
Two possible solutions
1. Go to pop up blockers under preferences
2. Try a new browser like FireFox or Safari, some updates can also help!
One of my new tricks to save favorite videos and articles is to
Set up a draft email entitled FAVORITE VIDEOS AND ARTICLES in my email account, then paste the links and add descriptive titles. This allows me to go back and quickly fine specific information as needed.
It's great for heated debates to know I have all of that info to back up my side of the argument!
You can also just bookmark a
You can also just bookmark a specific video or article and go back to it anytime. Even better you can save the entire website and visit it even when you don't have an internet connection or if they ever bring in internet 2 and shut the sites down :)

True
One reason I like to keep the links in a draft in my email account is so I can have access to them if I am away from my home base and browser, just log in for a remote computer and there they are!

I run Ubuntu Studio Operating System, it's free and better than Windows or Macs. It comes complete with OpenOffice and audio and video editing software. I have not touched windows in 2 years.

Well, I guess he called that one.

Better than mac 10.5?
In what way?
How much time have you spent with Leopard, it is giant leap even from 10.3!
OK hide your IP
When you are discussing "sensitive" information, use a free IP mask proxy. This hides your ip and if you use a couple of them, you can not be tracked. When you don't mind everyone tracking what you say - use regular browser settings.

Mac has a great back up program called Time machine
You just plug in a usb drive and it does the rest.
One of the coolest features in Mac 10.5 is Spaces. Go into system preferences and learn how to use spaces and expose. It gives you access to unlimited desktops at the flip of the wrist.
If you already have...
Mozilla Firefox (which I highly recommend) I would suggest you download "Adblock Plus" as well.
It gets rid of those annoying and distracting advertisements and banners that take a long time to load.
It also gets rid of the ads on Facebook.
Here's the link:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1865
Awesome!
I just downloaded it, and now i don't have those annoying movie commercials on Myspace! :)
Yippee!!!
Didnt' work
I installed Adblock, restarted Mozilla as instructed, and still have ads on FB. :(

Yeah
First things:
*don't be afraid of it
*learn to make back-ups, backups, backups...
*learn how to redo the operating system
*tweak it, manually if need be cause most tweaking programs are for the know-nothing general population (main stream). There are some that are good!
couple of sites, yes there's more but I haven't done any tweaking in quite-a-while:

The trick is-
To use Linux as your OS. I use pclinuxos, winblows free fer 4 years :)
One of my favorite keyboard shortcuts in FireFox
and probably some other browsers as well is:
Space bar for page down
Shift - Space bar for page up
Most people don't know it, but there is a keyboard shortcut for just about every function and navigation.
Get rid of Norton
We used Norton anti-virus "products". Norton really slows your computer down and is a perpetual pain-in-the-neck to use.
Now we use ESET for anti-virus. It's fast and simple to use.
Peer guardian
Run something like peer guardian and have ipcop on a standalone between you and the world
I always recommend
I always recommend downloading mozilla firefox, installing it as your default browser, and throwing the icon for internet explorer into the recycle bin as a "first thing" on a new install. Add a "open a new tab" shortcut next to the home page shortcut on the toolbar, and you're all set to go.
I have anywhere from 5 to 15 tabs at all times. That's how you really start to dig for information. People link nowadays so much, you can take your information gathering LEVELS past what you'd normally do with just one window or tab.
But the real important thing is to try and never use internet explorer, but if you must, be careful. Firefox and Opera much better IMO. Definitely worth a look if you've never used another browser.
"You are a den of Vipers.I intend to rout you out and by the Eternal God I will rout you out."
For an informed citizenry, individuals must discard the television set in favor of the acquisition of information via either books and/or the internet. An uneducated populous will remain in ignorance and thus continue to suffer the sharp ax of tyranny.
Tabbed Browsing sucks and it slows down your computer
Plus it eats up your RAM.
It's just another gimmick for the uniformed who can't navigate windows.
If you want some really useful advice try setting up a usb drive to boot and run your own copy of windows: It's better/way cheaper than a laptop and works almost everywhere.

Tabbed browsing is great!
I use it all the time. Keeps things a lot neater and organized without having a bunch of separate windows open. And you can see at a glance which tab you want to go to next without fumbling through multiple windows to see where it's at. I've never noticed it slowing down my computer either. What difference does it make if you have 5 tabs open in one window, or 5 separate windows open? I would suspect that 5 open windows uses more RAM than tabbed browsing in one window. Regardless, RAM isn't even an issue these days anyways, unless you're editing music or video.
How is that better than laptop if there's no computer to plug in to where you're at?
I do like portableapps for use on a USB drive, or as standalone programs on a desktop or laptop.
http://portableapps.com/
much faster in my experience
!
thats pretty cool...
Ok, so then you get two inet windows right? One coming from usb drive and one from your typical "C" drive (assuming im using a pc... and I am)
If you opened multiple tabs from the usb drive, then your RAM is not used up? Does this just store on your USB drive in a temp folder or what?
Its ok, laugh as much as you need to :), I'm used to it by now...
Love the tab browsing
Only thing that slows it down if I download 8 or so documentaries at the same time..
My advice:
Get a mac.
Mathew 5:9 Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
Great advice!
I have an IBM compatible PC equipped with Microsoft’s latest computer virus, Windows Vista. But if one uses a Macintosh compatible PC equipped with anything, that user will quickly find that an IBM compatible wastes a lot of time and energy.
Several years ago I came to the conclusion that the only people who hate the Mac platform are those who have never used Macs.
