Rand to Bunning: "Maybe we'll have a few more people in the race."

Nystrom's comment: Everyone get ready. Together we're all going to put Rand Paul in the Senate, where he belongs.

I'm a little slow but, didn't....
Rand Paul indicate earlier that he would not run against Bunning if Bunning decided to run again? What has changed? I think Rand should charge ahead and loyalties (or whatever) be damned. He can do this. We can help.
Rand
Rand has said he believes no one can defeat Bunning in the GOP primary if he goes ahead and runs.
This is probably very true.
If Bunning's fundraising is poor come this summer though, he may drop out, in which case he has to be ready to jump in. Bunning already told Grayson he could start gearing up in case that Bunning's fundraising is too low so Rand is just following suit.
Both Rand and Grayson will support Bunning if he decides to make a go of it though.
Why support Bunning? What alliegience does Rand owe?
Fund raising take time. This could be a ploy to slow down Rand's efforts. Man, I'd go full boat right now! It is hard to get behind a candidate that doesn't know what he should do...
allegiance
He doesn't owe any allegiance, but sitting senators almost always get reelected especially in the primaries when they are loved by the base.
Bunning is probably one of the top 5 most conservative senators, and he is the only one who makes comments about wanting to do away with the Federal Reserve. The Kentucky Taxpayers Union has always supported him, and Rand is their president so he needs to be respectful of membership support of Bunning too.
Rand Paul is following Grayson's lead. Bunning told Grayson he could form an exploratory commitee. Rand doesn't want to burn bridges within the party establishment who he will want support from so he has waited until Bunning gave the go-ahead to Grayson.
Grayson is a former Clinton delagate from the 90's so he's very liberal. Rand can know say that we need a real republican in the race as his rational for joining in and forming an exploratory committee.
He can always directly challnge Bunning later if there is some sort of opening, but most likely if Bunning runs, he's going to win, and Rand has acknowledged this.
In short...
If Bunning drops out= big opportunity
If Bunning stays in= very low odds for a win.
Also bunning is very conservative so if Rand Paul is respectful of him, Bunning might decide to support Paul instead of Grayson who knows. Plus McConnell likes Grayson, and Bunning hates Mcconnell so if McConnell forces Bunning out and supports Grayson as his replacement, Bunning will be angry about this.
This makes good sense...
but, I believe "momentum" is on our side. Rand would do well to ride it.
Scavengers
Well he says that he is going to form an exploratory committee next week or is he not? It's not as if anything is holding him up.
Everyone is waiting to see what Bunning will do in July when his newest fund raising numbers come out and also waiting to see what McConnell and Cornyn will do who seem to want to destroy Jim bunning in favor of Grayson.
Bunning has said "“I'm not going to walk into 2010 with less than $1 million when I know it's going to cost $7 million minimally, probably $10 (million), somewhere in that area, to run against the winner of the Democratic primary,” Bunning said." so if his fundraising is poor, then he will be pressured to drop out, but he might not leave easily.
On the current pace, he might not even get his 1 million.
Grayson and Rand are scavengers right now circling to pounce if there is an opportunity.
Wouldn't it be nice to have a junior senator who could outsmart the senior senator and minority leader in the senate Mitch McConnell though...
Well, we'll see...
hopefully, sooner than later.
BUnning still running?

Bunning drama continues to haunt GOP
by Aaron Blake
05/10/09
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-Ky.) continues to send strong signals that he is uninterested in retiring, adding to the Republican Party’s headache in Kentucky.
The latest installment features Bunning saying unequivocally at a Lincoln Day Dinner in his home state this weekend that he will run for a third term in the Senate.
But that message came after Bunning recently gave Kentucky Secretary of State Trey Grayson (R) the go-ahead to form an exploratory committee, even though Grayson has indicated he will not run if Bunning does.
“The battle is going to be long, but I am prepared to fight for my values,” Bunning said, according to local reports. “I hope you’re going to be with me.”
Present at the dinner was Kentucky’s other senator, Republican Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who has clashed with Bunning over his reelection plans. Last week, on what has turned out to be an eventful weekly conference call, Bunning eviscerated McConnell’s performance as the Senate GOP’s leader.
"Do you realize that under our dynamic leadership of our leader, we have gone from 55 and probably to 40 (seats) in two election cycles," Bunning said. "And if the tea leaves that I read are correct, we will wind up with about 36 after this election cycle.”
Bunning’s seat is a strong candidate to be one of those projected losses. Polling indicates that he is an electoral liability for the Republicans, who would likely be favored to win the race with a stronger GOP candidate like Grayson.
Despite Bunning’s public assurances that he will run again, McConnell and top Republican like National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (R-Texas) have continued to openly question whether he will follow through.
Bunning has fed that talk somewhat by saying in the same conference call that he will rethink the race if he can’t raise enough money.
Raising funds has been a huge struggle for the senator, who has accused party leaders of cutting off funding in hopes that he will retire.
“I'm not going to walk into 2010 with less than $1 million when I know it's going to cost $7 million minimally, probably $10 (million), somewhere in that area, to run against the winner of the Democratic primary,” Bunning said.
While the Bunning drama unfolds, two well-known Democrats are already running -- Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo and Attorney General Jack Conway – and other GOP candidates are beginning to take steps toward running.
Apart from Grayson, former Ambassador to Latvia Cathy Bailey has also made her interest public, as have state Senate President David Williams and Dr. Rand Paul, the son of former presidential candidate Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas).
Most of the GOPers weighing the race have been deferential to Bunning, and their public deliberations about the race suggest they aren’t convinced he will run for reelection either.
For his part, McConnell continued to cast doubt on Bunning’s candidacy at the dinner.
"If you're talking about the 2010 Senate race, I think we'll just have to wait and see how it unfolds," McConnell said, according to the Associated Press. "It's not at all clear yet what's going to happen next year."

Wish he had his daddy's fire
I'll do anything I can to help, just wish it was easier to see the senior Dr. Paul's passion in him. He just doesn't get me as fired up as his Dad does.
Everyone has there opinion.
I for one, actually prefer his speaking style to his fathers', and I love how calm he is. I instinctively trust him without knowing much about him, other than the fact that he is an eye doctor and the sun of the great Ron Paul. I like everything I've seen so far, and they say the apple hasn't fallen far from the tree.
I have so much hope for Rand. I believe he can become our president someday. Wouldn't that make daddy proud...

Isn't there millions still
Isn't there millions still left in the c4l bank? I'm sure most would all agree to set aside some of that money to put him in the race.
