New spy machine from Norway
Submitted by dabooda on Sat, 05/09/2009 - 13:59A Microcopter. It weighs just .5 gram. Battery powered. Has 4-inch rotor blades, carries a digital camera & flies at 20 mph. It can be carried in a pocket and launched within seconds "to give immediate situational awareness." The article does not specifically state that it carries a transmitter to send back its images and to allow the spy machine to work by remote control beyond the operator's line-of-sight, but if it can give "immediate situational awareness," I guess it's implied. How long do you think it will be, before we start finding these things hovering outside our bedroom windows and following "suspicious persons" step-by-step?
How wonderful that they will only be sold to governments, whom we can all trust to use them with wisdom and beneficence, and never ever to conduct warrantless searches and surveillance. But guess what? Now that the technology has arrived, it's just a matter of time before enterprising folks whip up their own mini spycopters for sale to the public. I look forward to the day when SWARMS of the things are following every elected public official, armed with cameras and microphones.

Addendum: here's another happy thought: Who says these things will JUST be used for spying? Picture a man standing at a podium, addressing a crowd, and one of these things flies right into his face. How hard would it be to make the copter blades razor sharp, and coat them with something nasty?

NOT too worry
A shotgun will do wonders for pest control...BUT I certainly would not use one..
you-no
Don't think that's a real option, unfortunately.
Using a shotgun or any other gun in a city is likely to result in patriot-control, not pest control. If some dork flies his spycopter near you, and you shoot it down, WHO is going to get trucked off to jail -- the spycopter operator (who the hell knows who that is?) -- or the guy shooting guns in the air?
