Does human nature require the State?

0 votes

Was just reading Francois Tremblay's book "But Who Will Build the Roads?"...Market Anarchy Explained. He has an argument that I think is fairly compelling on why the State isn't required.

It goes like this...
a) if people are good then the State is unnecessary.
b) if people are evil then the State is way too dangerous of a thing to have.
c) if people are a mixture of good and evil then the State is again too dangerous as it will attract into power the evil people who want control over others.

Thought's anyone?

Evidently, the average undisciplined person

thinks the State is necessary. Self-discipline--on all levels--holds the potential for obviating the state, but most know nothing about it and don't practice it in any meaningful way. Add to that mix the out-and-out sociopathic among us, and you've got yourself some big-ass problems. I don't know what the answer is--maybe just pointing out as often as we can the immorality of the use of force, which surrounds virtually every aspect of lives today? I don't know...

Nice summary

We clearly suffer from b or c...

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

We crave the illusion of order.

We wish to hold smoke. Nature is chaos, the state is order. We simply want that which we cannot ever have. Like the love of a good woman.
But his theory makes a heck of a lot of sense. I choose D, all of the above.

The State believes we are stupid.

Most all services can be provided by local council, without state government intervention. Individuals a capable of decision making.

The 'state' is evil

If a person robbed you then gave every single penny of that money to charity, you'd still consider yourself robbed, right?

Why is it acceptable for 'the state' to take what 'the state' decides it wants from you to spend on what 'the state' deems is necessary? Why is it OK for 'the state' to kill you to enforce it's theft?

Make no mistake, if you don't pay them, they will come to kidnap you and throw you in jail. If you try to defend yourself against this, they will kill you.

Human nature does nto require 'the state'. In fact, all facets of human nature are better served by no government at all. The desire to be left alone, the desire to be safe, the desire to achieve...all are much better served when there are no people who feel specially empowered to tell you what to do, to steal from you at will, and to siphon off your hard work for their own existence.

There is no good 'state'.

Interesting points

Of course i don't believe the state is necessary or legitimate. I certainly don't think human nature requires the state. What we should ask is "what is the purpose of the state?" and theres a simple answer in my mind..to preserve the status qou...I don't think its human nature to remain stagnant in terms of progress..If the state is abolished I think it will be through peaceful non-participatory means..I wonder what society would look like without it

A golden age.
