GORDON Brown was under pressure last night to call an immediate general election in the face of public fury over the Westminster expenses scandal.
Angry voters across the country are demanding a mass clearout of MPs.
At the same time, Scotland Yard has announced a team of leading police officers and prosecution lawyers will meet next week to decide what action to take against those who have abused the public’s trust.
A poll of voters yesterday found two-thirds want an election called as soon as possible. The same number want MPs who have been named and shamed to be forced to stand down, according to the ComRes poll.
Some MPs even fear the country could be on the brink of becoming ungovernable given the weight of public anger towards politicians.
Tory leader David Cameron said: “Now is the time for change. Our politics is reviled, our Parliament is held in scorn, our people have had enough.”
By last night, a petition on the official Downing Street website calling for Mr Brown to resign had more than 58,500 backers.

Harriet Harman, the Leader of the House of Commons, has admitted that more MPs will be forced to stand down over the expenses scandal.

Miss Harman said every MP shared responsibility for the current crisis over MPs' expenses.
But she rejected calls for a general election, insisting that the Commons should reform the expenses system before going to the country.
"There will be changes, there will be a general election, but right now all the parties can and are working together to try and restore public trust and confidence."
She added that MPs would be required to stand down from Parliament over dubious claims.
"I don't think any party is saying we don't have to have resignations. Two MPs have already been suspended from the Parliamentary Labour Party.
"Within each party there is a process which will end up with people standing down from Parliament."

The worst offenders were those who wanted to limit disclosure

An investigation by The Sunday Telegraph has established that backers of a Bill two years ago which aimed to exempt Parliament from the full force of the Freedom of Information Act have benefited from thousands of pounds paid under the second home expenses system.
Examples ranged from a former government whip who “bought out” his partner from her share of a London flat at a cost to the taxpayer of thousands of pounds, to a Tory grandee who spent thousands of pounds of public funds on his country estate before selling it.
A shadow minister claimed a £7,000 bedroom suite and a £2,200 television and “flipped” his second home, while a Labour election co-ordinator bought 16 bedsheets within the space of two months for a one-bedroom flat.
The MPs, who all backed the 2007 Freedom of Information (Amendment) Bill introduced by David Maclean, the former Conservative chief whip, will face questions over their use of expenses and will come under pressure to return money.

I was cleaning out some old papers today and came across articles on how deeply involved they are in the NWO. I have a clipping from of all papers - the NY Post, 8/3/94, pre Murdoch?, that mentions Prince Philip's attendance at the baccanalias at Bohemian Grove: "For decades, the Bohemian Grove retreat was the major social event of America's male power elite and their overseas friends. As for Prince Charles, he's no angel himself. His favorite uncle, Lord Mountbatten, the Earl of Burma, who was murdered by Irish Republican Army terrorists in 1979, established the United World Colleges in several countries around the world and had Armand Hammer finance the American version.
