Anyone knows who has been around guns that this is a debate that has been around for a long time. Let me make it easy for you since I've handled both many times.
General points:
AK = extremely reliable, ballistically superior (in 7.62 x 39), simple mechanism makes it easy to field dress, less accurate, fairly crude unless Russian or Bulgarian. The Chinese, Romanian, Egyptian generally speaking or inferior.
AR = less reliable than AK, typically chambers .223 caliber, lesser caliber than 7.62 available in AK, complex mechanism makes field dressing more complicated, highly accurate, good quality, easy to find ammo,
Just a few points to consider.
In the end, go with the AK, but only after you've started out with your Remington 30.06. Finally, move to your stashed shotgun, then to your main handgun, then your boot gun, your std military knife, your credit card knife, finally, your knuckles:-)
The gate to my property is 300yds away and 100yds below my house. I can plink beer cans off my gate with my 30-06. My driveway is literally the only way into my property, and I can cover the 1st 100 yds with the 30-06. If anyone travels beyond, then the AK comes into play...then shotgun, then 40sw, then 9mm, then knife. I seriously doubt it ever will come to knuckles. AR vs AK - purely bragging rights. They are both good guns (neither is a 308). Which ever you have doesn't really matter if you are not compentent with your gun. Doesn't really matter what hardware you have if you are not competent with it - practice, practice, practice with the gun you think you may need to use.
Let me know when you can detect who is the good person & who is the bad, then I may give the weapons a rating consideration over the internet. The one you have ammo for is usually the best choice..

Caliber should be the primary consideration over action type, magazine capacity, or even ergonomics.
I do not buy the hype about the purported "knockdown power" of the .223, based on high-velocity hyperstatic shock and yaw (tumbling). I believe it is hype, and nothing else. If it was true, most deer hunters would stalk whitetails with mini-14s and AR-15s. They generally don't.
A 30-30 round, however, will bag a deer at close range, and it's ballistically similar to an AK-47 round.
A .308 will bag a deer at 300 yards, and will probably stop a charging bear in its tracks at close range. That's the caliber I'd want for self-defense.
If the PTR-91 is a true clone of the HK-91, it must be a fine weapon.

I just paid for a Ps90 SBR and plan on stocking up ammo soon, also reloading my own heavier grain rounds, I don't think exotic ammo is an issue unless you don't plan on buying a few thousand rounds.
should I have gotten a heavier cal.? i went with the Ps90 (sbr) for urban manuverability (home, car, woods behind the house..), its easy silencer set up (which iplan on doing) and excelent penitration; how ever I am well aware of the exotic nature of the ammo but think that a reloading set up plus stocking up a bit now should cover that.

silencers are a class 3 item.. don't get caught without a machine gun stamp.. also just make sure you research the weapon and buy extra spare parts.. the parts for that rifle will not be readily available if the shtf!

The LRT-SASS will cost you a few hundred dollars more than an MSG-91 perimeter rifle. Nearly $1000 more if you just go with the standard PTR-91 instead.

accuracy, control and accessory capability is what i'm hoping to get out of the LRT-SASS. i still haven't marked the AK off my wish list but with the price on the SASS the AK will have to wait a while. after i get the SASS i will still need a good AK for my short range mud gun but then that's it i PROMISE.
although.... i do need a good 40 cal. and i should also get a .45 for when the SHTF, oh and i would hate to be caught with out a good old .357 S&W Magnum for when jams aren't a option and then there's the Ruger SR9 that i can't stop thinking about. :)
i'm sure i left something out...... oh yeah, ammo ammo ammo and more ammo.

If You Can Only Afford or Carry One Rifle, Make Sure it's a .308
Don't play around with assault rifles like the AR and AK, unless you are merely looking for something cheap - then go with the AK.
Even the AKs have doubled in price. What used to be a $300 rifle is now a $600 rifle or more.
I've said this often, but I'll repeat it here, one of the best .308 semi-autos for the price is the PTR-91.

The manufacturer purchased actual H&K tooling.
So it's not really a clone, it is an actual H&K, just manufactured under a different brand name in the USA.
