Just wanted to let you guys know---you ALWAYS pay for a brand-name. My guess is, most of those places just order from here anyway. Have some heirloom seeds? Join the savers club and save even more. Cool service.

Paleo corn

Is there any corn left that tastes like corn tasted 50 years ago? Man, would I like to get me some of that. Now it's sweet like candy. I remember hearing quite a few years ago that they introduced genes from cod fish to make it sweet. I don't now if that's true. But whatever. They took the taste out and replaced it with sweet. High fructose?

I don't think I got ripped off though

I ordered from this package from http://www.survivalistseeds.com/ for $118.95 including shipping. I know it's only 20 varieties, but it's 6000 seeds in a sealed PVC container. This was more for insurance purposes. I ordered the rest of my seeds from Baker Creek (I really like that they are proud Ron Paul supporters) and prices are pretty similar to what you have listed. For anyone that wants a good variety for a discount. They have seed collections. The Medium size Southern Collection has 60 varieties (full size packages) of 25 different vegetables for $90. Not bad.

BTW...I know it's unlikely, but

just out of curiosity has anyone been able to come by some Bloody Butcher field corn. I ordered some from Southern Exposure Seed Exchange (I think it was them). They initially said they didn't have enough for my order but would get some more and send it. Haven't heard anything since. They're still listing it on their webpage and presumably taking orders, though it's starting to get late for planting.

Aha!

Apparently they called and said they got them and did we still want them(?). Shipped yesterday.

I would say that Michael should charge us for speeding up mail order service...but the call came before my post, it's just that nobody tells me what's going on around here.

shows they may have some at seed savers exchange

Most "heirloom varieties are GMO

Cross pollination happens naturally, so if someone claims theirs is "heirloom", they introduced old DNA from old dried vegetable tissue to make it similar to the old varieties. We've grown tomatoes from the same seeds we've collected since 1720. Every year there is a change in the way the fruit looks or behaves due to cross pollination. But my cousin (botonist) says that climate and soil changes have a lot to do with the way they grow, look and taste.

FYI: My grandmother used fish emulsion to fertilize tomatoes, They grew humongous but tasted like fish! Nasty!

Seedsavers.org gets 5 stars in my book

great germination rates even on multiple year saved seeds and the products are very tasty and grow very well. They are so good in fact that the rabbits and birds kill themselves trying to get to my plants.

when you harvest

let one or two plants seed out, you will have seed next season without buying more. check your seed purchases make sure they are not seedless hybrid that don't produce seed.

Thanks for

Go to the local feed & seed store

Not tractor supply, or one of the big box ones, find where the local farmers buy their seed and feed, I spent about 20 bucks this year on seed, and bought by the 1/2 lb. or lb. corn, peas, beans, etc. Find a store that has bins and a scale to measure it out in much cheaper. There should be a farmers co-op or a feed & seed in most every area that isn't dead in the middle of the city.

Sure its cheap. But has the seed been tampered? Is it GMO.

Were poisonous sprays used to grow the plant that this seed comes from? Is the seed now hybrid? This is the problem with seed production. Most of it is a product of the 'fairyworld' that's been set up by Monsanto/Cargill and big pharma.

When I buy my seed from Baker Creek, I know these seeds are none of the above. They have an organic pedigree. That is all I care about. I want to be able to collect my own seed in the fall and grow again in the spring.

No,

They are not certified organic, but all of what I plant is open pollinated except my corn. I like the taste of the hybrid corn, I have 2 kinds of old non-hybrid sweet corn stored up though. Just check with the stores local in your area I bet they could get you organic seeds if they don't stock them.

I ain't a chemist or a botanist, but I'm thinking that by the time whatever that seed may have picked up from its parent (sprays or chemical fertilizer) by the time I harvest a new crop from it, most all of that is long gone. Especially after the next years crop. Don't know though just guessing the plant wouldn't store it up.

To clarify

tomatoes, melons, and such things I didn't buy by the lb. they sell those by the ounce. But, an ounce of those little seeds is only like 40 cents or so.

To clarify, are these

To clarify, are these heirloom seeds?

Check your own local feed & seed

Here we have 3 close by. The one I go to has:
Congo, Crimson Sweet, suger baby watermelons
Blue lake, Contender, Kentucky Wonder, Rattlesnake beans
Fordhook butter beans
Dixie Butter peas
Pink Eye Purple Hull
California Black eye
Which all of these are open polinated, and you can save your seed. They have a bunch of stuff that is hybrid also.

Several types of tomatoes and cucumbers, greens, etc.

Just know the names of what you want and ask the folks there. Read the labels and see if they are open pollinated or not.

Corn I do plant a hybrid cause I like the way it taste, but I also have some 2 types of old non-hybrid seeds saved for corn that doesn't taste as good, and I have a couple of pounds of the hybrid saved up.

These were not certified organic seeds, but what I raise from those seeds will be raised as close to organic as I can. (manure & pepper and soap bug spray)
