Submitted by beverly33 on Mon, 05/18/2009 - 21:41
Well I'm not going to vote it's too depressing.
Besides they say the state is bankrupt no matter what. I think it's a no win situation.
Anybody else bother to vote?

Believe it!: Call for a California Constitutional Convention
Thursday, May 21, 2009
How Wannabe Govs Stand on State Constitution Do-Over
Meg Whitman embraced the call for a constitutional convention by an influential business group Wednesday, while Republican gubernatorial rival Steve Poizner scoffed at the idea as “one more excuse” for Sacramento politicians.
Democratic front-runner Jerry Brown gave the convention call the old paddle-on-the-right, paddle-on-the-left treatment, while S.F. Mayor Gavin Newsom gussied up his longtime support for the idea with a brand new branding message. And L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, more focused on licking his wounds from a stinging surrogate election defeat, gave the world’s shortest answer when asked for his take on the constitutional remodel.
One day after California voters (well, about a quarter of them who bothered to participate) delivered a deafening roar of disapproval to Capitol electeds by overwhelmingly rejecting a propositional package of alleged budget reforms, the political atmosphere crackled with the lexicon of political change, as vows to “overhaul” and “restructure” a “failed system” and a “broken government” echoed throughout the state.
“If ever there was a tipping point in history, this is it,” Bay Area Council CEO Jim Wunderman told a Sacramento news conference, apparently figuring that if ever there was a day for rhetorical excess, this was it.
“It’s an idea that ought to be considered, given the crisis and dead end that the state finds itself in,” the general added. “We need some kind of catalyst for change, that’s for sure.”

Is This Legal?
I went to my city hall on my lunch hour to file a records request. On the Clerk's counter was a stack of copies of the local paper with the masthead and a headline: Schwarzenegger Makes Case For Ballot Propositions in Culver Roundtable - Day of Decision is Tuesday."
Below the fold was a transcript of the Governator's plea to support 1A. The Culver City Observer also contained a letter to the editor supporting 1A in the Letters section inside.
Does anybody know if it is legal for a city government to use the public counter to prominently display a newspaper for the apparent purpose of swaying voters? This is a weekly paper, and it was probably on the counter all week prior to the vote.

Libertarian Party of California Says the Failure of Propositions
Libertarian Party of California Says the Failure of Propositions 1A Through 1E Signals Need for Real Budget Reform
To erase the deficit, the California Legislature must address its addiction to spending
PANORAMA CITY, CA — The Libertarian Party of California (LPC) applauds the defeat of ballot propositions 1A through 1E, and notes that to eliminate the perennial budget deficit, the state legislature must confront its addiction to spending.
"The Libertarian Party of California couldn't be more pleased that voters soundly rejected the proposed tax increase and phony budget solutions offered by Props. 1A through 1E," said Kevin Takenaga, the chair of the LPC. "These propositions, which were crafted in a backroom deal with no public input, offered phony solutions to real problems.
"The legislature has no choice now but to confront its addiction to spending. And the Libertarian Party of California has offered, and will continue to offer and support, policy suggestions that could save billions of dollars dedicated to wasteful and inefficient programs."
Government demonstrates every day that increased spending doesn't guarantee quality service. For example, test scores for students in government-funded schools are lower, on average, than for students who attend private schools, which spend less per capita than its public counterparts. In "The Money Myth: School Resources, Outcomes, and Equity," author and University of California professor W. Norton Grubb cites studies that find only a weak relationship between public school funding and educational outcomes.
Moreover, adjusting state employees' pay and benefits to average that of workers in private industry could save the state up to $40,000 per position and would go a long way towards eliminating the current budget deficit. The state budget could be further cut by reviewing each state department, division, bureau, board, and commission to determine whether the taxpayer-funded government service should be discontinued, merged with other departments, or charge user fees to cover its budget, or whether the service should be competitively bid out at less cost to taxpayers. Many such options were already offered by the California Performance Review Commission.
The legislature and governor can also find savings by rethinking its current punitive taxes on wages, enterprise, the sale of goods, and the value of buildings, and replacing them with voluntary user fees, pollution charges, and taxes on the land value generated by governmental public goods.
Spending relief could also come as a result of decriminalizing recreational drugs. Billions of dollars could be saved by eliminating enforcement of drug laws, including the arrest, prosecution and incarceration of nonviolent drug offenders.
"Libertarians don't just complain, but offer real solutions," Takenaga said. "Our sound advice is a far cry from the shell games, phony spending caps, and budget gimmicks that the Democrats and Republicans have tried for years to offer as budget reform. If they have proven anything, it's that their ideas don't work. It's time for a fresh approach. Libertarians believe in freedom and limited government, but we want the government we have to work efficiently and effectively. Unfortunately, that is a novel concept for the career politicians who control Sacramento, but it's one we hope voters will embrace as a real solution for California."

Press release from the Libertarian Party of California
Schwarzenegger says he's heard voters' anger. (I hope so!!!)
May 20 11:30 AM US/Eastern
By KEVIN FREKING
WASHINGTON (AP) - California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Wednesday he's heard "loud and clear" a voter message to take care of deficits through budget cuts alone, without passing additional costs along to them.
Voters on Tuesday resoundingly rejected Schwarzenegger's package of budget-balancing measures that he promised would temporarily fix the state's financial crisis.
Instead, he now faces a $21.3 billion budget deficit.
Schwarzenegger said the state's residents have had to sell off motorcycles, second cars and hold garage sales to make ends meet in recent months. Now, they're telling state officials that the government has to shrink, too.
"Don't come to us for extra help. That was the message," Schwarzenegger said after a meeting with Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius. "And you know something. I appreciate that when you hear that from the people. It gives us a chance to go and adjust, and say 'OK, we went in the wrong direction. Now lets go in the right direction and lets go do what the people want.' "

No Regrets
When I read that the Governator-to-be had actually studied Austrian economics, I was hopeful, but I am proud to say, I voted for the Libertarian candidate, anyway.
I'd be kicking myself, now, if I hadn't.

interesting, thanks for the read. while i don't trust him for a minute, like you, i sure hope he gets it and i hope the people remain outraged and unwilling to continue with the corruption. thanks again for the post.
nice to see the props go
nice to see the props go down. though i will never understand how people were smart enough to vote NO on the propositions yet allowed the mayor to be reelected recently. dumb. it should be interesting to see where they get the money to make up for all the money they have squandered. i suppose we will just be owned like the car companies now. disgusting government from top to bottom. arnie is a lying fraud. those who plan to run for california governor also said we needed to vote YES on the props so it looks like arnie will be replaced by rats like himself unless someone with integrity runs and is allowed to win.

every one of the tax measures was given a big fat no!!!!

Despite a big advantage in cash and manpower, the campaign failed to gain traction from the start. Polls throughout the race showed all the ballot measures -- except Proposition 1F -- losing badly, as voters expressed equal parts confusion over the package and disdain for the Sacramento politicians who crafted it.

On a different note...
If we have to bail out CA, does that mean that Obama is going to fire Arnold and put someone else there? Also, if we go by how Obama is doing other institutions, does that mean that state reps will be sent home and not allowed to vote until the bailout is paid back? Does CA lose its electoral votes until full repayment? Things to think about when you're nationalizing a State... ;)

Congressman Tom McClintock (endorsed by Ron Paul)
Hears what my Congressman Tom McClintock who represents California's 4th CD (The Fighting Fourth) has to say! Also; He is for a "balanced budget", and "No bankruptcy"
McClintock on the Propositions
Here are Rep. McClintock's recommendations for the May 19th Special Election.
Prop 1A: Extend the Tax Increases. NO. This is the fig leaf that hides certain deficiencies suffered by the legislators who caved into pressure for the biggest tax increase in California's history. This measure EXTENDS the tax increases for up to two ADDITIONAL years in exchange for a spending limit that doesn't limit spending. The "spending limit" is laughable – it requires placing "unanticipated revenues" into a special fund that is then to be spent for a variety of additional purposes including education, debt service and health care. And since all funds are interchangeable, this merely allows funds spent for one purpose to be shifted for another. The bottom line: If you were against the tax increase, you're against Prop. 1A.
Prop 1B: Increases Public School Spending $9.3 Billion. NO. This is the classic J. Willington Wimpy approach to finance – "I would gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today." In exchange for not making certain mandated school payments over the next two years, this measure obligates $9.3 billion in supplemental payments in future years. But wait, it gets better. According to the Legislative Analyst, it's not entirely clear the bill will actually save money in the short term, but very likely it will cost much more in the future.
Prop 1C: Lottery rip-off. NO. This measure takes the Lottery revenue away from the schools, diverts it into the general fund to pay for $5 billion of new borrowing to balance the general fund, and then locks the general fund into making additional payments to the public schools in perpetuity. If this sounds like another of the infamous Schwarzenegger "After me, the flood" proposals, you're right.
Prop 1D: California Children and Families Rip-off. YES. This measure irresponsibly rips off an irresponsible rip-off, which in balance is probably a (barely) good thing. The Children and Families Fund (now called First 5) was the Rob Reiner disaster that raised tobacco taxes through the roof to pay for some highly dubious community programs. This slush fund has built up a sizeable reserve that Prop 1D filches for the general fund.
Prop 1E: Mental Health Funding Rip-Off. YES. This measure irresponsibly rips off another irresponsible rip-off, in this case the Mental Health Services Act that is funded by a 1 percent surcharge on upper-income wage earners and small businesses. Both 1D and 1E would require a more hardheaded appraisal of spending priorities, which is the only reason that would justify voting for them.
Prop 1F: No Raise Without a Balanced Budget. NO. What's not to like about a measure that says to the Legislature, "If you don't pass a balanced budget you won't get a raise?" My advice: beware any measure that puts a representative's self-interest ahead of the public interest. I'm afraid this would ultimately end up as a perverse incentive for legislators to pass higher and higher taxes in order to qualify for higher and higher salaries. We actually had a balanced budget device in the constitution that worked well: the Gann Spending Limit. We need to bring it back.

McClintock is my rep as well
He's made some really bad votes lately, and I've called his office on it. Are you in El Dorado County by chance?
Amazing! Calfornia is going
Amazing! Calfornia is going down the toilet and there isn't a thing in there about cutting spending. How about tossing the illegals out of the medical, welfare and schools systems for a start? The state has a cut an artery and is trying to stop the bleeding with a bandaid.

BOHICA!!

excatly... if they would cut the illegals out of medical and education that would go along way to balacing their budget.. I do not feel sorry for those people in Kalifornia.. the liberal, commie bastards are getting what they deserve.. once the California government runs out of money they can't keep funding these liberal programs..

California recall: Does one man hold key? Tom McClintock, top GOP conservative, could tilt race for or against Arnold Schwarzenegger.(USA)
Byline: Daniel B. Wood Staff writer of The Christian Science Monitor
BURBANK, CALIF. -- Republican candidate Tom McClintock laughs from deep in the belly when asked if he will be the "spoiler" in the great populist revolution/experiment/circus of California's gubernatorial recall election.
"My opponents say I'm the Ross Perot of this campaign, possibly siphoning off enough votes to hand the election to Democrats," he says, settling onto a shady park bench for an interview. "I say, 'Wait a minute.... Ross Perot was an idle millionaire, with no public-policy experience who one day on a whim entered the presidential race.' That sounds like another candidate in this race ...

McClintock's votes
Voted "YES" to give Arnold Palmer a $30,000 gold medal
Voted "YES" to selectively tax a group of individuals (bailout bonuses)
I hate thos two votes from him. The guy is not following the rule of law. Call his office to reel him in.
Is anyone in El Dorado County?
?
~
I think you know that Dr. Paul was the ONLY one who voted No on the Palmer medal. Arnold Palmer - Congressional Gold Medal by a 422 to 1 vote.
I would like everyone to vote the way he did, but I wouldn't nail McClintock to the wall for that one. He knows the CA budget like the back of his hand, is all I'm saying. And Dr. Paul supports him.
Voting NO across the board
We have got to stop the spending - maybe this is an opportunity to reign in the government to it's basic functions.
