Vermont: Time to Secede
Submitted by Michael Nystrom on Tue, 05/19/2009 - 16:13
Vermont is about as far away from Texas as you can get, yet the sentiments, expressed similarly by Texas Governor Rick Perry, are the same: Secede.
Snip from Dan Weintraub's article:
Why secession? Simply put, because our nation can never recover from the decades of corruption and duplicity and greed that have led us to this abyss lest our leaders attempt to do so through means that are anathema to the righteous moral and ethical lives, hearts and minds of the citizens of Vermont. Our leaders will do anything to save the system. And we can no longer be party to such actions. It is time for us to leave.
Freedom is indeed popular. Thanks to Patrick, at Patrick.net for the link.

PAALEEEEZE!!
Vermont couldn't even muster the courage to vote for RP in the primary. Time waste.
No way
I don't understand why people here spend so much time on low probability things like secession. We are no where near this being a realistic option. Hugh majorities of people feel a vastly greater loyalty to the US than they do to there state. The federals have done an excellent job of making people dependent on them. Dependency breads loyalty. Secession isn't going to happen in the foreseeable future.
I"m from VT
and those from VT are more loyal to the state than they are to the Fed gov't. . . . just saying . . . I hope it goes through. That state in particular has always been very independent and I have no doubt they'll take care of themselves better than the gov't ever could.

Yet a decade later it was gone. It was unstable, it couldn't last.
Sounds like a bunch of
Sounds like a bunch of hogwallop, no one can just make that decision. Secession talk is so silly.
No state can leave of its own volition,.
but together they have the power to reform or even end Washington D.C.
Any state that secedes on its own would be stopped by the U.S. Military.
Secession would most certainly be ruled unconstitutional (Texas v White).
In a Constitutional Convention the states have the power to amend the Constitution allowing secession.
Really.
Yet it is probably going to happen anyways... just simple math.
So silly or not, it's coming...lol.

I will applaud the breakup of the USA!
The only way to fight the Leviathan State, is to KILL the Leviathan State!
I owe no allegiance nor sympathy to any bloated, oppressive "union". Sorry, Dishonest Abe, you had it exactly backward: "United we (and liberty) fall, divided we stand (in freedom)."

Caution
Secession, Isn't this what the New world order wants.
No! The NWO Wants centralization and 1 world Government.
Not decentralization.
Tracy
there is no "NWO" and the
there is no "NWO" and the movers and shakers of the world do not want a single world government. what they want is many smaller balkanized countries that don't strongarm and sap away the strength from productive multinational corporations because of the emotional whims of a "democracy" or the false ambitions of unproductive bureaucrats. what is needed is competition in governance!
the fact that the US, a petrified relic of the cold war, continues to use its military might and [temporary] monetary power to try to control the world and misappropriate its resources will be its own undoing. because it was large and powerful at one time, it continues to operate on the premise that it will continue to be so forever, and that talented and productive people won't be driven away by its excessive, unwarranted and unjust consumption, and that all it has to do is wave a flag and evoke tears and all if forgiven.
it is a pitiful giant, crumbling under its own weight. it cannot, by the very laws of economics, survive, as has been demonstrated countless times in history by its predecessor empires, and will no doubt be demonstrated again in a hundred or so years when PRC goes the same way.
governments are inherently corrupt. bigger and more powerful governments are even more corrupt. this problem cannot be solved by greater monopoly. only small to medium sized states, with an attitude of thrift and a desire to compete, are sustainable in the long term. the US is a medium sized state, but to be sustainable, it has to rediscover its roots of cooperation, noninterference, thrift and competitiveness.
it's called divide and conquer.

The first state to secede...
Will be the first state to experience a boom in business investment, and population from incoming refugees of the USA.
I almost hope the first one is a low-population northern state with a Canadian border. If Texas goes first, half the population of the US will pour in the door!

I believe you are correct....
Most businessmen I talk with in Manufacturing or investment rich industry (ie high capital costs) willingly state they will move their businesses and families to the first state to succeed...
Most hope it is Texas! They have the most difficult barriers to increasing the size of Government which means that business is more likely to flurish and prosper. Texas could end up with revenues higher than the US states combined! LOL

If Vermont did secede, it would probably be a socialist republic
If that's what they want, good luck to them. I wouldn't live or move my business there but that's the sort of competition I welcome.
In my bizarro world, California becomes a libertarian paradise. Freedom plus a Mediterranean climate... *sigh*.
Ron Paul "Sign Wave Across the USA" -- November 5th!
i've come to the conclusion
i've come to the conclusion that not only are governments obsolete, but now in our global economy, large powerful nations are simply unsustainable, seeing how they try to strong arm businesses that can jump borders on a whim. china seems to understand this.. why doesn't the US? do they want all the talented people to john galt off to another country?
for vermont's sake, this probably isn't a bad idea. once they get out from under the US, the businesses can come in, talk some sense to their politicians, and they can learn the benefits of being a pro business tax haven.
what is washington going to do? start a war? with americans? it'd be a PR nightmare no president would ever want, and that's not even considering the international sanctions that would result from attacking poor little defenseless vermont.
Light Read
For a light read on secession, for VT in particular, read "Secession" by Thomas Naylor... a quick but thoughtful look on the topic.

thanks for posting,
very interesting.

"The body is but a vessel for the soul,
A puppet which bends to the soul's tyranny.
And lo, the body is not eternal,
For it must feed on the flesh of others,
Lest it return to the dust whence it came.
Therefore the soul deceives and despises."

Long live the R3VOLUTION!
Long live the R3VOLUTION and all the Revolutions it spawns!
Whats the big deal?
Correct me if I am wrong but, I always thought that the Federal Government was supposed to have very limited authority when it came to States rights. That is why states across the union are lining up to leave the union.
I really do not think much would be different for the states that do escape the clutches of D.C. with the exception of how much tax they pay to the State vs. how much they stop paying the Federal Govt.
