the credit crisis is finally hitting me personally.

and now I feel sick/stressed...

I'm having trouble obtaining the necessary student loans to continue going to school....

And in the news I get to see the headlines of billions/trillions constantly being spent and given to all manner of unnecessary programs, wars, other countries, businesses, banks, etc. etc. And all I need are a few thousand dollars... a fraction...

I'm against the spending/bailout policies, but as long as they're ruining everything/dooming us to collapse, can I please get a bailout? I wouldn't even need that much in comparison to the others, and I'd be able to actually offer something in return in the form of an educated citizen and member of the workforce with skills to improve our society.

Sure, a college student bailout would be helping to destroy the country, but we're already on that path, and we're the ones who are going to be hurt most by this..... so really, it's the least they could do. At least I'd still get to go to school, even if everything else falls apart.

I guess it's sort of true, anybody can be for socialism when it's in their best interest/they benefit from it.

And just imagine... of all the trillions they're giving away, much of that is probably wasted, pocketed, or lost... and if I had just a fraction of that, I probably wouldn't have to worry about canceling on my future.

Go directly to the college "Foundation" or Office of Development

Write an essay about your circumstances and submit to the foundation. They have AT LEAST one person in that office that work on grants exclusively. Get to talking to this person, they know of plenty of grants for the taking.

I'm in college pursuing my

I'm in college pursuing my RN degree. I have yet to get a loan. It's all been out of my own pocket. Consider going to a community college to get your basics out of the way THEN transferring to a university to finish. You'll still have that degree from the big university but at a fraction of the cost.

I'm currently getting my basics out of the way at a community college and going to get my Associates Degree RN then transfer once I get some more money up. Probably take a year and work full time to save up enough for UAB.

Also, look into financial aid, grants, ect. TALK TO A CONSULAR. Take it from someone in your position. I'm working from about 8:00am to around 2:00pm and going to school in the afternoon. I do have a good paying job so I can afford to pay my car payment and insurance, but I've had to move back in with my parents. Works out great too! Free food, free laundry, no rent. Yes, it sucks bringing girls back to your parents house but oh well.

I think that's all I have to say...

I sort of had the same idea

I sort of had the same idea all along... I go to an art school, and I figured, well, I'm still required to take general classes like sciences, English, etc. etc. If I'm going to this specialized, private school to learn about something specific, there's no reason to pay their full tuition rate for classes that they're not experts in and that are basically irrelevant to me.

However, the credit transfer policy at my school is very strict. Most people who transfer here have to completely start over. There's also a limit to how many credits can be transferred. I luckily saved a lot of money by taking AP classes in high school and was able to transfer in a full semester, which I basically got for free. However, if I wanted to take some classes at another school where tuition was cheaper, they would only accept the transferred credit if it was for a class that they didn't offer or if it was in an area where there was no significant/suitable equivalent.

Anyways, I'm trying applying to multiple banks now, looking for a third job, and appealing to my school to get refunds on certain fees/fines, and requesting extra financial aid.... hopefully I'll get the funding somehow.

It makes me scared though... I can't even get a $4500 for this summer... I don't even want to think about the problems I'm going to have when I have to try and get $35,000 for the fall/spring.

Get a job, save your money,

Get a job, save your money, when you have enough to afford an education pay for it. In the mean time, while working, go to your local library and read your ass off, find someone in your area that has a job that you want to do and ask for advice, a mentor, that can tell you want you need to learn.
There is always a way, don't for goodness sake take out a loan and become a slave by having to pay it off, plus the interest. You will get much further working now and paying as you go.

Crazy Idea -

In my family we work our way through college - myself and my siblings all worked part time jobs during the school year, and full time in Alaska on fishing boats and canneries during the summer. At graduation we left without the debt most of our peers carry around for at least a decade - is that a good way to start your life on your own - in debt and enslaved?

that's funny... I do that

that's funny... I do that too... I currently work two jobs and go to school full time... but when your tuition/school is over $50,000 a year you don't really have much of a chance of paying it off as you go....

If I have to make monthly payments to pay off student loan debt, that's not a major problem to me... Yes, it'd be nice to avoid starting life off in debt, but if it's the price you have to pay to do something you enjoy in your life, then I guess it's worth it.

Is college worth it?

If you believe college is worth the money it costs to go, then arrange your life so you can save the money to go. Get a cheaper apartment, or move in with someone, or live with your parents. Put every dime you make into the bank, except for the absolute bare necessities (that means little for entertainment). If you have a car loan, get rid of the car and the loan. Find a "beater" to get you around. Get a second job. Work weekends, evenings, and save, save, save.
I quit college in 1977 with only two years in (gave up a full scholarship because I was sick of school), and went to work for five years. After 4 years of playing around and growing up, I spent one solid year rearranging my life and saving every dime (at $3.50 per hour) until I went from $6000 in debt to $6000 saved and debt free. That was enough to put myself through one semester of a private college I really wanted to attend. I did the same thing the next year, and the next, and with the help of a small private loan, I finished my last two years. My degree, though not "practical" in the sense that it prepared me for any particular job, is a source of great pride for me. To me, it was worth it.
Ask yourself: what is your education worth to you? If you think the above story illustrates too much effort and trouble to get a degree, then college is NOT worth it. Find something else to do.

I'm only saying this because you've mentioned you were an art student: I myself graduated from a fancy schmancy art school here in Kalfornia. However, I've gone to a community college over the last decade to improve my computer skills, and I've got to tell you ... they are every bit as good as expensive schools for getting what you need to make a living ... at an incredibly low cost per unit, at least that's the case in my state. And all my teachers have been excellent.

So you're bitching about not

So you're bitching about not being able to get the money for your student loans, money that was stolen from your countrymen? Look if you could get it fine like you said they are going to give it to someone so it might as well be you, and you can get some of what was stolen from you back. However the fact that it is drying up is a good thing meaning these programs are going away.

Your college degree won't be worth the paper it is written on shortly so why not focus on the future? And the future we were all expecting few years ago is gone, history, finito... Start learning some real self sufficiency skills instead of some worthless college book learning.

You want to be a rich king pin in the near future? Learn how to make toilet paper from some local plants, or alcohol, or grow tobacco, hey here's a novel idea grow food etc. Those things will be at a premium soon. The society we all know and grew up in is nothing but a corps and will not sustain us much longer.

I'm talking about private

I'm talking about private loans, not government loans.

My suggestion is never borrow money.

Don't take a loan in any case. What's your rush? Find a job at the bottom in a field that you want to work in and work your way up. If you want to be a doctor, get a job in a hospital. Become a janitor if nothing else and watch what goes on around you. Talk to those in the field, find a mentor. I know many people who have gone this route and they do very very well. Never had to pay off the debt and less stress. Sure you may be one of the oldest students when you finally go to college, but what does that matter?

Is there such a thing anymore?....

Haven't they all the major lenders recieved government bailouts?

While growing tobacco and

While growing tobacco and making alcohol are valuable skills, the gvnment will not, and already is not allowing competition; you are not allowed to sell these goodies to public. And I imagine to get licenses or permits to make these will require a lot of money and pushing through red tape. I agree with making these things for your own consumption, that includes food, but unless you are a black market type, you'd be in more trouble if you tried to sell them, even in times of need, that are coming.

That's not to contradict majority's opinion here that by itself college degree is worthless in the coming times as means of obtaining good employment.

I went to college in to early 70’s

And it was relatively cheap. 2 years of Junoir college (4 buck per credit hour) and 2years of university (20 bucks per credit hour) So my degree only cost about 1500 bucks. I worked some reallly shit jobs to pay for my degree (e.g. I washed dishes for a friggin fraternity) am discouraging my grandkids from the college route, from a cost/benefit perspective. When I married my wife, she had a 9 year old daughter. We immediately began setting money aside for her college education. My daughter was (is) smart and did 2 yrs of JC then 2 yrs of university and had enough money for the 20% down on her 1st house.. I know my advice is too late for you, as you have already stepped off the precipice, but perhaps some youngsters may benefit. With respect to bailing you out – FU. Remember that the inextricable partner of freedom is responsibility. You chose to go into debt for a college education (freedom) and now you must repay that debt (responsibility). I’m sorry for your situation, but don’t ask me (by government theft of my labor)to pay for your choice. Suck it up and learn

Weird..

I'm an independent, have zero income, and am in my third year of taking the full loan allotment at a private law school. After I graduate, I will owe about 500g's over 25 years (with interest), but I have had no problem getting loans. To the contrary, about every major national bank still in existence is begging me to take out one. Why would they not want to loan money that MUST be paid back? What are the circumstances for those of you who are being denied?

well, unfortunately, I'm not

well, unfortunately, I'm not even 20 years old yet, so I don't have enough of a credit history to qualify for a loan without a cosigner...

My cosigner has not only had to cosign for all of my loans, his own mortgage, but also the student loans, car leases, etc. of my two older siblings. However, now they're well into their mid-late twenties and are able to fully handle their own loans/debt, but the credit still reads as my co-signer being responsible.

What's scarier is that I'm only trying to get $4500-5000 for this summer to take classes I'm already enrolled in... I can't even imagine the pain in trying to get the main loan this fall... (It doesn't help that my school/tuition is ridiculously expensive... like well over $50,000 a year).

I asked my cosigner the same questions last night.... If the bank makes money off of the interest, they should want to loan money that can't be paid back, or will take a longer time to pay back because they stand to make a bigger profit.

I'm 24 and have no credit history..

My only debt is student loans. I've only rented housing, I bought my car with cash, and have never even owned a credit card. And I have never needed a co-signer for a student loan. Also, my tuition is about $30k/year.. My lender is Sallie Mae. I don't understand why you would be denied... But I dono, I only took out one small loan in undergrad, maybe they are more willing to loan to grad students.

Last summer a friend of mine

Last summer a friend of mine was in the same exact boat. He couldn't get approved for student loans so had to skip finishing his degree for now. No student loans, BUT he and his wife were APPROVED for a $150,000 mortgage and bought the house! He got $150k on a house, but couldn't get a $6k student loan.

Crazy times we are in.

...

Maybe a college education is not such a great investment now.

Peter Schiff said it best when he asked: "Who wants a mortgage with no house?"

"Fascism should more properly be called corporatism because it is the merger of state and corporate power." - Benito Mussolini.

So check the field you are getting your major

How many are losing their jobs now. Most are probably still in debt for student loans and unemployed. My son graduated with marketing and economy and does home remodels. Was never able to get a job in his "field"
But he still owes over 30k on loans.
College today is brainwashing and a sad sad joke. A degree means almost nothing. Two years ago I worked (for a very brief time) for a company that fired all their employees with degrees and brought in new people at half the pay. Ten weeks training and the "under educated" were doing the same job and saving the company millions a year.
I would suggest you think long and hard before saddling yourself with all that debt.

haha, well, I'm going to art

haha, well, I'm going to art school, and I'm studying painting, so as far as jobs go, there are pretty much zero. I'm going to school to learn, not so much to get a job.... I want to do something I enjoy/have an interest in, and I want to be the best I can at it.... hopefully I can either support myself on that, and if not, then in a job that's somewhat related that still allows me to practice my interest on the side.

Not to sound insensitive but,...

It has been said that when the people are hungry and pissed off enough at our government and more specifically "their" monetary policies, it will then be the time for the revolution to go to the next level.....
I do not advocate violence but, people behave in a "different" way when they have "had it." Especially when their dreams have been shattered.
Ironically, the Judge yesterday said that a federal judge dismissed FOXs' news lawsuit against the fed through the FOIA saying that "he didn't want blood on his hands..." What could this possibly mean? Is he aware of something awful that the rest of us just don't know yet? I think the country is bankrupted and the monetary policy is falling apart creating a chaos that we are not going to be pleased with.

sorry to hear that

but this is the exact reason I decided not to go to college. Not to say you made a mistake or anything of that sort. Personally, I just did not want to be tethered to a payment plan, owed to the government for a year, let alone 20!

Think of all the wealthy and famous people

who quit college or didn't go. I'm trying to make you feel better but maybe it won't. How far along are you and what is your major? Maybe keep a diary because I think we are living history and our lives will never be the same. good luck bump

Try to avoid the student loan trap

I put myself through college by working. Sometimes I took time off school to work so it took a long time before I graduated. I took one student loan in the beginning for $2500 and that was the only one. After graduation I took a good job and paid off the student loan with my first few paychecks. I'm so glad I didn't rack up the debt like all my friends did. Some of them had over 60,000 that they are still paying on years later.

Write to your Senator. Maybe they've got some baskets of cash

laying around. Gotta keep it somewhere.
Seriously though, writing your Senator can't hurt. The worst thing they can say is "no".
I would suggest writing it as a dumb sheep who just wants his slice of the wonderful pie. You might just get what you're after.
