Weekend Pondering: Is Facebook a Front for the CIA?
Has anyone else heard this story about Facebook being a CIA front? It was a Ron Paul supporter I met at the Rally on Lexington Green who tipped me off. I'd never heard it before (which was unusual, since I thought I was hip to all the conspiracies).
Remember the old story about the sun and the wind having the competition to see who could get the guy to take his heavy overcoat off? The wind blew as hard as it could, but the man just clutched more tightly at his coat. Then the sun came out, friendly and warm, and they guy took his coat off voluntarily.
If the government really is just a criminal syndicate like the mafia (as some claim), it knows it has to maximize its resources and achieve productivity gains. The KGB/Stasi is the old school, inefficient, labor & resource intensive model of spying. See: The Lives of Others for the gist. The old method involves too much work, and too much human involvement.
If innovation in the spying industry takes place, Facebook could be the newest, most innovative model. Let the computers do the spying! But after the outcry over the forceful, wind-like Information Awareness Office, a new model was needed. So along came the friendly, sunshine-like "social networking" site whereby people actually volunteer all of their information for anyone and everyone -- including the government -- to see. It plays so perfectly to that constant of human nature - vanity - to get folks to reveal what they never would otherwise.

These days it is impossible to tell what is true anymore. My question du jour seems to be who is lying to me today and why? I deactivated my Facebook account yesterday. This was not primarily reason, though it did play its part. (Though it's not like I'll be able to hide now.) Mainly there's just too much information to keep up with. How much of it is really necessary? When the Revolution comes, we'll know. You won't need Facebook to tell you. In the mean time, my stay as incognito as possible and conserve your energy.
Of course, what do I know? I'm just a dude with a blog. I figure the best way to get to the bottom of this is turn it over to the good people on the Daily Paul. After all, 30,000 heads are better than one. What do you know about this one?

I can hardly stand it. A friend posted this the other day (quote may not be exact, going from memory,)

Well, now, that seems just really weird to me. If I was her friend, I would not want my dalliances on the net. As "her friend" I am only so anonymous to her other friends, you know? Next, if I had some experience I was willing to share, seems like it would be pretty personal kind of thing, again something I am not likely to put on the internet. Last of all, suppose I were the woman, and gave him another chance, and discovered later that the lovely things he said and did to win me back were lines someone fed him on facebook?
There are days I am ready to pull the plug on the whole internet. I get really tired of talking to empty space. Even when the empty space occasionally responds, it does NOT feel like "human interaction" to me, and it seems like this virtual world is beginning to replace face to face interaction. I get to feeling like maybe I am THAT special, and if people want to talk to me they will actually have to talk to ME - not empty space and hope I find their comment in the ethers....

there is no CIA=Facebook or the other way around. there are just groups of special interest people trying to ride-along, or create "useful idiots" as pawns,[be it companies,politicians or events]. "catching-up"also means they are in part "left-behind"; indicating they are currently at a disadvantage.

Facebook is a commercial enterprise that has been exploited by a host of organisations and individuals (public and private) that have no direct financial interest in the firm.
Bottom line: its a way of gathering "the goods" on people. Steer clear.

The quote is semi-true. Conspiracy or not, you have to make the connections, and where there are connections, there is usually money involved in things like this. And if you can't make the connections, then you'll never be able to see the big picture.

Ok, so the guy who put up $500,000 venture capital was once on a VC group, and one of the people who was once in this group was part of another company that was once tied to the CIA. Michael Moore couldn't have put it worse. I can find connections between Sesame Street and my toilet paper supplier. Does this mean Sesame Street controls my toilet paper?
People get carried away when they start finding "connections" and using that as a substitute for actual proof.

I'm not a big believer in conspiracy, as many DPers here know about me. I actually don't have an opinion as to whether Facebook is a "CIA front." Scroll down and read some of my comments on this thread, and you will see that there is no doubt that law enforcement is trying to use Facebook as one of its many tools to gather information about people like us. This is not conspiracy, though perhaps it smells like that to many reading this. The information I have presented in my posts is independently verifiable. The more research I do into how law enforcement is gathering and sharing information about law abiding citizens who are only exercising their first amendment rights, the more I become concerned. They are weaving a vast web with all these databases--the fusion centers, the NCIC, the NICS, and others--and again, it is unclear how the information is actually being shared and whether they are following the guidelines already in place in the United States Code and the Code of Federal Regulations. (The Maryland State Police spying scandal is evidence that regulations alone may not be enough to protect activists, as they spied on activists in Maryland in defiance of the guidelines given in 28 CFR part 23). I have been unable to find evidence of any significant oversight of these databases--whether, for example, the information in them is accurate, guidelines on how the data is collected by law enforcement, or how the information is shared from agency to agency. The point is that there is *plenty* enough for us to worry about that is verifiable--without resorting to conspiracy theories.

Wow, I have a LOT of respect for you, but I thought you were a little sharper on words than that.
Conspiracies are going on all the time. If a group of people get together in secret and figure out a way to do something, it is a conspiracy.
They have taken the word and attached "crazy" to it in everyone's mind, now even fine people like you are afraid to call a spade a spade.
I absolutely am anguished over how many ways good people justify lying - for things like "credibility" and "to get along" and "for the greater good."
Been literally sick to my stomach today, I don't know how much more I can take.

Are you a "bleeding heart liberal" who believes that the gov't cannot do ill because it is composed of well-intentioned human beings who gain and maintain their positions of power because of virtue and merit? Everyday the government is involved in cloaking its actions and its intentions in obfuscation, disinformation, generalities, poetics, and out-right lies.
It strikes me as bizarre that you cleave to the liberty movement, but your presence does have its benefit if only that it reveals the naivete that many people possess. Thanks.

Is that okay? From what I've seen, it's a very cool Internet application that developed in the free market.

The CIA is out there watching...Are you doing anything worthy of the CIA's notice? IF NOT, keep educating people free of fear and continue the good fight. We are not here talking about taking over the gov., we are talking about fundamental rights that people are forfeiting and need to become aware of again. Traditional Republicanism, Rule of law, Bill of rights, free-market and so on.
These truths are already written down, we are not rewritting what the founding fathers gave us, we are reaffirming them. So if the CIA wants to squash us lowly people for excising inalienable rights, then it will happen whether we like it or not, but one thing is sure and that is they will doom themselves, as surely as we as citizens will when breaking the law. I have nothing to hide and will continue with the knowledge that freedom is to be obtained not in fear but a sound mind, know that a righteous effort will earn justification.

The ORIGINAL founders of the social network, ultimately called "facebook" were twin son's of one of my classmates.
Tyler and Cameron Winkelvoss - identical/mirror twins, were working on the network at Harvard and asked Mark Zuckerberg to assist, as he had more computer knowledge. He soon quit returning their calls and became "unavailable". They the discovered the reason. There was obviously enough proof, including emails, to support their lawsuit.

Their father, Howard Winklevoss, a very successful businessman

He also has some involvement in building these racing fleets - but do not know the name of that company. Howard emailed us on a regular basis during the Olympics to keep us in the very exciting loop of all the races. Howard is a talented writer and made us feel as if we were in Beijing too!.
The Facebook site on the web used to have this story there for everyone to read. I could not find it there today. So I typed in the son's names for the link. What info I did find there and on wikipedia has been massaged so much, the truth in unrecognizable.

BTW, Tyler and Cameron competed in the Beijing Olympics in the two-man rowing competition. They came in 5th overall - great for their FIRST Olympic experience. We recently had a great political conversation and ultimately I told them they should run for public office - and how about president? They joked and said one could be Pres and the other VP - no one could tell them apart until they would pick up a pen to write or a fork to eat. Like I said, they are identical/mirror twins. (This fact also works great for the two-man rowing because they have opposite sides which are stronger.) Howard told them, if they were serious political interest, they should go back to Harvard for a law degree.

One of their posted pictures was with CA Gov. Arnold Swartzenager (sp?). These two boys were on each side and made Arnold look like a "shrimp". These boys are 6'3" well built too!

I like your post -- it's interesting but I don't believe it.
Because Peter Thiel is on the board, I'd feel confident that Facebook is respecting privacy. (Being invited to Bilderberg doesn't make one evil.)
As for James Breyer, his relationship with In-Q-Tel is not surprising. In-Q-Tel is not evil nor is the CIA necessarily.
I don't think it's fair to Thiel & Breyer to make them out to be party to some sinister conspiracy without any actual evidence.
Successful people are often linked to globalist criminals, since there's only 1 name in town defining globalization.
On the other hand, if you think the CIA etc isn't datamining Facebook or trying to trade money for technological access, you'd be naive.
My point is we have to get away from sinister polarizing theories -- Facebook is most likely not a CIA front. But yes you should be more responsible with your personal info online.
More so we should be educating business & government about Natural Rights so we stop these illegal invasive policies at the source. Make them understand better so they know why their policies violate the law.

Is "Us" Versus "Them" Really An Accurate Description of Reality?
If God is Omnipresent, how can you escape the fact that the CIA is also God. After all we all breath the same breath, Light and Shade are still both aspects of God. There is no reason to fear Facebook or anything because God is everything. We are projecting this reality just as much as we are recording it, things are constantly changing, nothing is solid.
If the CIA wants to waste their lives monitoring all the b.s. on Facebook and Myspace, let them go ahead and waste their lives thinking that they are separate from others and thus from God. I think facebook is a tool just like any other, it can be used for many reasons. There are far too many people on Facebook. To keep track of so much information would be futile or pointless. Can a handful of cops really arrest a million people all at once? Of course not.
the biggest weapon anyone could use is Fear, but fear is something only we can choose to feel. If we choose to feel Love for thy neighbor and thy enemy like Jesus explicitly tells us to, then we will start to dismantle this reality of us versus them into one of unity. We must preserve our differences for we are all unique and nations are unique, but we must also be citizens of the world, after all, we are all human beings, most of us that I know of anyway.
If anyone here has seen the film "what the bleep do we know" and applied the knowledge of quantum physics to this us versus them scenario, we find that just in believing in an us versus them paradigm do we simultaneously create that paradigm. When scientists measure light as a wave they get a wave and when they measure it as a particle they get a particle. We are made of Light, God is the source of the Light. How we choose to measure ourselves is the reality we will get, its not a done deal, its constantly changing, but the crucial aspect is how do we want to measure it? Do we really want more duality, then keep up the us versus them paradigm, but if you really want resolution, then see it as your own projection.
We must all remember that we too were once asleep, all the consequences of our previous beliefs and actions don't just dissappear over night, they are still playing out right now!!! this is not about us versus them, its about removing our own ignorance of the fact that God is ominpresent and his perfect love exists within all of us no matter if its a cia operative or ron paul. Don't you think Ron Paul knows this? Why do you think he is so humble, he's not worried about all this stuff and acting paranoid, he's doing what he knows to be right and sees the enemy as not as an enemy to be vanquished, but as a brother who has lost their way through ignorance, his method is to love and educate his fellow man.
We must learn to take responsibility for the reality which we are projecting. Look at what we've collectively created so far, the ron paul revolution was an amazing development, however, my feeling is that most people in the revolution have forgetten what its really all about, its about Love.
Somewhere somehow, there are qualities and tendencies within us all that feel the need to have something like the CIA watching us, the fact that most of us have taken responsibility to remove those tendencies and imagine a better world is what made us progress, the bilderbergs aren't evil reptilians, they're probably just ignorant of God and the fact his Love and Light are omnipresent.
The "lives of others" taught a great lesson too btw, the stasi was reformed because the people he spied on were loving and kind, they weren't stockpiling ammo and freaking out about stasi waiting for one to walk in the door so they could blow him away. They were artists and creators busy imagining a better world through their art and music and that is what changed the stasi guy, this is how we will change our world; we are the world, its not separate from us.

The next part of the coming ethics and balance is simply our own individually managed expectations choosing to drop and leave behind the chains of all we consider real. That our expectations flower into expecting what is true and accurate which is that there are infinite possibilities and they are all available to us.
This has all been part of the vortex flow coalescence. Nassim's work is one of many that are starting to get the whole picture. From what the universe has fed back to my consciousness thus far he is just the most encompassing and information dense and sensible. Producing that this infinity and unity in tandem is no longer esoteric. It is in fact a calculable reality. Standby. Not much longer now. :)

One caveat
Facebook creates the illusion of unity or the illusion of a consensus on reality, much like the t.v. does. Computers and televisions are neat tools but Nature is even more amazing. The fact that we are a part of Nature and the divinity within that Nature is something we could all use a little more of.
We have gotten so far off track from our own origin that most feel very confused and divided but its the integration of all the meaningless messages from these mediums that keeps us from remembering our true nature.
For those of us who killed their television and starting finding life more enjoyable, you know what I'm saying. Facebook is by no means a necessity, neither is ac/dc electricity for that matter.

Of course, the Sun and Wind don't really have intentions: they just are what they are.
But free-market economics and other libertarian ideas are based on the realities like Sun and Wind and how people respond to them.
People do respond to economic and social conditions, and it's silly to expect that politicians blowing harder won't have the opposite result than desired.
My favorite analogy is comparing cat-herding methods: you can herd them with a net or with a string.
It works better if you understand and work in harmony with human nature (i.e., respect people and the rights they will defend).
