If You Were Just Elected To City Council...What Would You Do?
Submitted by Freightrainblues on Fri, 05/22/2009 - 00:38
We all can't be federal congressmen and state senators - but many of us can work and become city council members. What action would you take for your community after earning the seat? Please consider and discuss.

I would fight
To remove tasers from the police force.
My city would be the first to ban the use of tasers.
The sheep would be happy that the cops aren't going to tase you to death.
The cops would be happy because that means they can use their guns more often. Its a win-win.
Great Discussion
There is a lot here to consider and think about. I'd like to keep this going.

I don't live in a city
I live in an unincorperated area. People who live in unincorporated areas of a city do not get to vote on what goes on in the city they support directly, so that is one reason so many Fraternal orders, like The Grange are important. The Hall can provide a place where unincorporated citizens can meet discuss the city and form committess to write resolutions and present our concerns to the council.
If you live in an unincorporated area like I do, this is how we get things done. The Grange efforts in Mendocino has our county by law free from GM food, including grapes.. everything is grown organic here. We fight for the right of hunters, fishing, lumber, trucking, and we come together over issues, such as we recently defeated one proposal for establishing a wave generator and are now working on defeating another. These folks never stop, just repackage and hope we don't pay attention.
The best part about working like this is partisan politics is NOT holding us back. We find we have allot more in common than we do with party platforms... we cut through party platforms and this is why my county registration for voting is the highest in the state and nearing 30% Indy registration as Obama sours.
WE ARE GOING TO WIN!

i would work towards eliminating my position by the end....
of my first term. but that's because i don't have my head up my ass like the majority of people. i realize government is the problem and not the solution.
everyone can talk about reducing the size of government. well put your money where your mouth is. start by reducing your position. make it vanish. all politicians are parasites. their salary is paid for by the hard work of others. don't pay your share of their salary and you go to prison.
i'm not for reforming government. i find it ridiculous when i see all these post about hijacking the GOP. the entire plan hinges on finding hundreds of people just like Ron Paul, getting them elected and saving us all. i've met the people who run the Campaign For Liberty in my state. and they are no Ron Paul. they are just people who want to control and refuse to relinquish it even though they are doing a terrible job. same goes for the Libertarian Party here. i've been around them a few times and i get the feeling that they are just Republican Lite.
i would gladly take Ron Paul's view of what government should look like over what we currently have. but the more i study the more i lean towards anarchy.

Enforce/promote the constitution.
I would use the constitution as my test for every presented situation just like Ron does in congress. I would start cutting everything one by one that does not adhere to it. I would use every bit of my knowledge to influence county, and state governments to repeal the 17th amendment, if not to secede altogether and when my term expires and I'm not re-elected, I'd run for state government.
Educate your fellow council
Educate your fellow council members, and your community, to Agenda 21, and how all the orders on how to manage your community coming from above originate from the UN. People need to know that foreigners are running thier local towns. When they find out, the outlook changes.
Attend the freebie conferences the UN throws each year, where they get America's mayors to sign a pledge they will give up local rule of their communities, and bow to the globalist agenda.
I would...
get rid of the Redflex red light $cameras in my town. In addition I would make it easier for the citizens to put issues to a referendum. It would also make the City Council more accountable for their actions.
Run just run.
Run for whatever office you can get. Run as a Repugnant or Demoncrate but get into position. And when you win, serve as Ron Paul has taught you to serve. Remember it's not your money your spending.
grant
ensure open carry in your city
make sure each person in the police department signs an oath to supprt and defend the constitution. after they sign remind them because of their oath certain unconstitutional laws and ordinances can't be enforce. to start off with.
Reduce
Reduce the size of the police department (consolodate much of it with the local sherrif), replace it with a big property insurance policy, have one cop that basically just fills out insurance forms (isn't that what they do now inbetween beating traffic violaters?) since our city is also it's own electricity provider I would build our own wind or other generation, use the revenue from the electricity sales to operate the city, finance geothermal heat pump system for electricity customers so as to create a year round constand load customer, get rid of the sales tax, find all activities that are supported by federal dollars and cut them, stop accepting federal dollars, accept gold in payment of utility bills and promote a local gold reciept money system, oh and de-flourinate the water.
Put the most comfortable chair at your spot on the table
Get to know the city manager if you have one. Walk, don't run.
And RS---they don't usually just have bills sitting around waiting for the new guy's vote.

The post asked what I'd do.
It didn't ask "how" or "when".
Geez, do we have to define everything?
All you'd do is get to know the city manager, sit in a comfortable seat and walk? How about, drink coffee and brown nose with the rest of the slobs? So you'd be a slacker like the rest of 'em?
It's the first day. There's never anything to do but schmooze
I actually decscribed EXACTLY my first day as Mayor. Then I went home and wrote some resolutions--No federal funding for anything (lost 3-2)
Capping property tax rates---(lost 4-1) and open a full investigation into police brutality in response to recent in-custody death--(passed 3-2)
I should have slowed down.

There was an excellent
There was an excellent article posted yesterday on this very topic:
http://www.dailypaul.com/node/93847
There is a global agenda being carried out at a local level through city councils and city mayors to herd people into the cities and impose draconian legislation in the guise of helping the environment, but its end goal is enslavement. It is a must read article for anyone who wants to fight the battle in their communities.
Vote against....
....any and all tax increases and propose tax reductions. Try to end all "business privilege taxes", shut down the "code enforcement" dept. End our town's "recreation dept".
Sell off all of the "open spaces".
Take no pay for the "work" as council member.
Now, that's for the first day.....

This just came up for us.
This just came up for us. FEMA wants us to participate in a flood plain study as part of disaster preparedness. They have sent the paperwork to EVERY MUNICIPALITY IN THE COUNTRY.
You have to agree to change codes/ordinances to comply with their dictates, and in return they allow the municipality to apply for a grant. They don't say how much grant money is available nor the odds of landing any of that money.
They also wouldn't commit to not adding other hooks into the program, and they didn't know how we could opt-out if we do join the program.
Our city council discussed it and was so dissatisfied that everyone on council voted against it.
In case anyone wants to get involved, this is happening in every municipality. The city manager should know about it, along with the county disaster prepareness person.
