The actor James Coburn
Says MSM (Methylsulfonylmethane) Cured His Rheumatoid Arthritis [pain]
Following his win as "Best Actor in a Supporting Role" for his work in the movie "Affliction", veteran actor James Coburn, 70, spoke of overcoming a 15-year battle with rheumatoid arthritis when he was interviewed backstage at the Oscars in March (1999). The arthritis community was stirred by claims Coburn made and people clamored to learn about the treatment he mentioned.
James Coburn's Claim
As reported in USA Today and Entertainment Weekly, James Coburn described a period of ten years when movement caused relentless pain and standing was "really troublesome". In 1990, Coburn could barely walk because of rheumatoid arthritis and it impacted his work as an actor. He was forced to put his career on hold. Coburn was unhappy with the medical establishment and believing they could not solve his problem, he stopped seeing doctors. After concluding in his own mind that doctors just want to keep patients on drugs and not cure the problem, he took matters into his own hands.
Coburn focused on a treatment plan which combined deep tissue massage, electromagnetic treatments, and MSM which he insisted "really, really does the job". Coburn reportedly used the word "cured" in his statements.

What you can and can't do
There is no real alternative fix once you tear those structures. If they are torn he has just lost two of the four structures which support his knee-and most likely a bruised or torn structure which pads and cushions the bones of that joint while he walks.
What you could do: the most important thing you can do, as someone mentioned at the bottom of the page, r.i.c.e or p.r.i.c.e. Protect, rest, ice, compression, elevation.
Protect: he needs a hinge brace
Rest:
Ice: 20 min on 20 off all day long- ice massage also works. Take a Dixie cup fill it up, freeze it, then peel cup away from ice cube and massage the whole knee- keep the ice moving until it's all gone; 5-7 minutes no more than that or you risk frostbite.
Compression: bag of ice, and ace bandage rap
Elevation: leg must be above heart, the higher the leg the better.
In 3-4 days he'll notice the swelling decrease and will be slightly more functional.
This is an injury that will require surgery if he wants to return to his sport.
Massage: find an educated therapist, cause the knee can't bend certain ways you want to find someone who has knowledge in this area: ask them how many hours they have trained- don't go below 750hrs I recommend 1000hrs of basic training; ask them if they do medical massage or sports and orthopedic massage.
Massage will keep fluids from pooling in injured site, and decrease pain in associated areas calf, groin, IT band, quads, hamstrings
If money is an issue or insurance: you do not need an MRI to diagnose
A skilled orthopod (orthopedic surgeon) should be able to diagnose with two tests: anterior drawer test and pivot shift test
If he tests positive, which it sounds like he will it means surgery.
If he's ok with not being able to run for the rest of his life or play sport then this injury will heal in time (not good in time as bone spurs may develop imo).
If he's a "machine" and is very active you'll need to support him mentally-as this injury can be depressing to athletes-- trust me I know-- I have surgery lined up myself.
Will be glad to answer more questions as I am an orthopedic manual therapist by trade or help if you live in Colorado-- I could at least direct you to some great therapists and docs-- it's what I do.
Hinge brace: some docs will tell you to wear it till surgery especially with that mcl torn, but I've been walking without one after two weeks- I'll use it on uneven ground or if I feel like I need to go for a run.
Alternatively speaking, the spirit communicates through the body, because the knee is responsible for a change in direction physically, a knee injury is a change in life direction. His spirit is asking him to evaluate where he wants to go in his life. Were there changes that he's been contemplating that he hasn't initiated yet? etc.
Goodluck. I'm going thru the same ordeal, with the same exact injury it's called the "happy triad." Don't know why they call it happy.
ice and rest
if the meniscus is torn to much he needs surgery. ice it as much as possible .rest it.knee brace from the local drug store.
I slipped on black ice a few years back
And broke my left fibula 5" below my knee and chronic tears in knee tissue. The teaching hospital doctor wasn't that worried about the tears and said I didn't even need casting or crutches. Knee still hurts a little. A VA MRI showed a little bone on bone, but that MD wouldn't send me to an orthopedic specialist until I first went to the VA's physical therapy, which did not help and I quit. If I want to be able to run again, I'll have to see a private specialist. My daughter (black-belt full contact karate) tore her knee tissue bad enough teaching kick-boxing aerobics she had cadaver tissue implanted surgically replacing hers.
Good luck
Sounds like you need to know about PRP
Platelet Rich Plasma. I think it is a miracle.
Thank you !
It has been years since my injury; I will definitely keep it in mind when I go to get it taken care of. I hope I didn't wait too long, but at my age one more ache and pain is not like two B-B's rolling around in a box car. (smile)

thanks a lot.
What about glucosamine sulfate? Is it good?
In another list DMSO - that's what they use on race horses; it's been suggested. Any personal experience?
and also KI?
#1 sequence is great for knees.
thanks again
Glucosamine...
Glucosamine salts are good for things like arthritis and joint pain, but they won't heal torn tissue any faster.
The problem is that the tissues your husband tore are not vascularized (they have no blood supply). Most of what makes up your cartilage isn't cells, but is rather collagen and other connective tissue secreted by cells. It doesn't heal very fast or completely. :-(
Heat will feel good on it, but this is inadvisable, as it will promote inflammation. Ice is much better. Stay off it as much as he can for as long as he can.
I've torn the ligaments surrounding my glenoid cavity (shoulder) in a dislocation, and ten years later (I am 26) it still isn't up to factory spec. Depending on how bad the damage is, the best route may be arthroscopic surgery to suture the damage and hope for the best.

Oh, and this from experience...
If the doctor gives him a prescription for a opiate-derivative painkiller (Oxycodone, or anything containing it), do not get hooked on it. It is easy to do. I had a friend that really messed his knee up for life because some idiots at the VA hospital kept giving him oxycodone so that he could live his life the next day with little regard for the day after that.
OC withdrawl will make you feel like spilt f***. And while your on it, you won't know what damage you are doing to yourself because your pain receptors are dulled.

if
the meniscus is torn and stopping the joint from moving in a regular fashion,i suggest getting it fixed as i have been there. i opted out of replacing my acl and do just fine and still ski the bumps etc etc. you just need to strengthen the surrounding muscles and not act like you are 16 anymore when it comes to playing sports etc.
You have my prayers
I suggest you take this opportunity to find a care provider, find someone who you trust that is licensed to practice, accupuncture, accupressure, you might look for someone who operates on a sliding scale.
I am into alternative medicines, but I am not a doctor. I have a primary care giver who is also into alternative medicine.
They are listed in your phone book. I really think it is important to have a care provider, someone who you can call for advice, who knows you, your body, your mind, and can actually assist you, even if that means having to go to the hospital (the second to last place I want to go)
If you think going to the hospital is what is needed, GO. Good alternative medicine is not anti-western medicine or hospitals... we just work hard at avoiding them with alternatives, but that can not always be done. Like an X-Ray saves lives. That's a fact. I hope your husband does not need an X-Ray, but if he does, please do not seek alternative medicine at this time. Get traditional help. You are in my prayers, and I hope that is all you need, but iif you need more.. I encourage you to do what is best for your health.

Athletes who must heal rapidly
often go to Miami to get PRP, which is Platelet Rich Plasma done, especially on their knees, but other injuries also. $200 for the exam, $300 for kit, $495 for each injection site. Sometimes takes up to 4 injections per site. One knee, one injection would be $995. $495 for another injection. It is an office visit and is a little uncomfortable during injection, but nothing unbearable at all. No recovery time. Possible brace if necessary. Xrays are done on site. The Dr. in Miami is the most experienced as far as I know and I researched all over the US. Just had it done myself and it takes six months for complete benefit to be realized, but so far, I am very happy. It is an injection of your own blood (no rejection) so that the injury (body) can heal itself. I consider it very advanced science. Most in the US are just now getting into it. You might find someone closer to you, but I traveled because some report more discomfort.
What a complex injury; this may not
be helpful, but I know one person whose torn meniscus was helped to heal over time by a very skillful acupuncturist. The treatments, unlike most acupuncture, were deep and painful, I'm sorry to say.

Medical Marijuana
The DEA's Administrative Law Judge, Francis Young concluded: "In strict medical terms marijuana is far safer than many foods we commonly consume. For example, eating 10 raw potatoes can result in a toxic response. By comparison, it is physically impossible to eat enough marijuana to induce death.
Marijuana in its natural form is one of the safest therapeutically active substances known to man. By any measure of rational analysis marijuana can be safely used within the supervised routine of medical care."

marijuana for pain in his case or for something else?
he does not have so much pain.
and where to get it?
Forget it
To get a recomendation you must live in a county, and in a state, that has legalized it. Here in CA you need to find a care provider/doctor to write a recommendation (cost about $300.00) and then you take that recommendation to a dispensary, where you purchase their products. It takes time to become a licensed patient and allot of money, and if this is a serious injury, which it appears, PLEASE SEEK HELP NOW. My prayers for you are still in action!

Get some chilean hot peppers and long hot peppers
Boil a handful of the whole in a gallon of water, let it boil down for a few minutes and wipe some of the water on the muscle. You can also mix it with some aloe and spearmint for an "icy-hot" sensation.

Stay off it for a while
If a ligament isn't torn all the way, he can see how well it will heal on its own. If the ligaments are too badly torn or stretched, he's better off with surgery. The instability in his knee could lead to other problems like wearing cartilage out or other joint injuries.

the acl is not damaged. he
the acl is not damaged. he looks like he had 1st or 2nd grade mlc tear but in a twisting motion he heard a lot of clip noises and went down.
what about the hinge braces? are they useful and harmless?
I've read he needs to exercises femoral quadriceps and the hamstrings, which kind of exercises?
2 weeks after the injury the ice is still of benefit? he has small swelling.
thank you
Ice is good
If it seems at all infected, don't use heat- that will spread an infection. I would recommend some garlic to reduce the risk of infection.
Fico... R.I.C.E
Rest. Ice. Compression. Elevation. Take an ace bandage and wrap it up tight from mid-thigh to mid-calve. You can take some NSAIDS (non steriodal anti-inflammatory drugs) like motrin/ ibuprofren.
