To salute, or not salute
You're gonna love this one.
My granddaughter came home from school yesterday and out of the clear blue sky she asked me "Can the teacher make me salute the flag?" I was taken aback by this question because I did not think they did this in school anymore. She went on to say that every morning they say the pledge of allegiance. She said she was not paying attention and started to fidget with her necklace. Her teacher walked over and told her she must put her hand over her heart when they say the pledge. Now just let me tell you my granddaughter has aspergers (high functioning autism). I asked her what did you tell her? She said "I told my teacher you can't force me to salute the flag if I don't want to." The teacher said you should want to salute the flag" My granddaughter answered "Why should I have to if President Obama won't do it?" I'll bet the teacher almost shit!
I hope you told her
Just because president Obama does not salute the flag is not reason for you to be like Obama. I agree with the teacher. Flag didn't hurt anyone, but some of those people who salute the flag have. Why honor them?

The claim that Obama
The claim that Obama wouldn't salute the flag seems to arise from one, and only one, photo op when he seemed pre-occupied or possibly slow to react to the ceremony. ....

.... but there are plenty of other occasions when he was photographed saluting the flag.
More to the point, with regard to the little girl, there has been a Supreme Court decision -- roughly 65 years ago -- that a person cannot be compelled to salute the flag and recite the Pledge.

I'm just surprised Obama wouldn't recite it....
