Ft Campbell Army Base Closed For 3 Days Because Of High Number Of Suicides
Linda Young - AHN Editor
Fort Campbell, KY (NewsBahn) - With at least 11 confirmed suicides this year Fort Campbell Army Base in Kentucky is closing down for three days to allow commanders to identify at-risk soldiers and help them with their mental health issues.
To gain some perspective on why the Army would order a stand-down of Fort Campbell, the 11 suicides there were a significant number of the total 64 suicides the Army experienced so far this year and Army officials are also investigating some other deaths as possible suicides.
Fort Campbell began the stand-down Wednesday and officials are working to identify anyone who has feelings of wanting to hurt themselves. As stress levels go up in the military, many soldiers are having trouble dealing with resulting mental health issues.
Base commander, Brig. Gen. Stephen Townsend, spoke to the 19,000 soldiers of the 101st Airborne Division.
He told the soldiers that if anyone needed help to just ask, he told them that he had no way of knowing if they needed help unless they asked. Soldiers are sometimes reluctant to ask for help with mental health issues.
Following an Army suicide prevention program in March there were no suicides for six weeks, but last week there were two, leading to the decision to stand-down for three days and try to reach soldiers grappling with suicidal feelings before they act on those feelings.

Simple solution...
bring them home. Check out the book "War is s Racket."

This is really scary and sad....
I was an infantry staff sergeant with the 1/506th Airmobile for a couple of years. We had a great general (Brandenberg) Great brigade commander and great officers in general. They cared about the welfare of their men. In fact, not uncommon for the general to show up anywhere and start shooting the breeze with a private. Having been a former Marine sergeant, I had combat experience as did many at that time, and we trained our guys well but, also listened to them. I talked to so many young men that I came to the conclusion that most of their problems were financial or emotional family problems. (Wife leaves guy. Wife caught cheating. Child support obligations that can't be met. Young family with too many kids and no money, etc.) I took the time to physically go with my young soldiers to welfare offices to try to get assistance. I'd take them to the Red Cross for a little extra money and maybe a food and diaper package. Anything. I think that things haven't changed any and when you think that you are out of options is when you pull the trigger.....so, I hope the officers and NCO's get off there asses and start helping their soldiers again. You may need him to watch your back one day.
How are they being trained???
A young man I know went through Army training recently. Apparently, there were a high number of suicides in his unit, and regularly men were locked up temporarily for suicide prevention, and at least one murder within the unit -- all within the first 6 months of enlistment and before deployment.
He described being regularly hit, beaten, and verbally abused by his commanders and fellow enlisted men -- as part of normal basic training. He showed off his wounds. He said it was some kind of "experimental" new training. Basically, they stood around one person and continued hitting him until he said enough. Also, he felt they were lied to by the commanders on a regular basis.
That's sure not the way the Army training was a generation ago!
Anyone else hear of abusive training practices in the Army recently that might make someone want to do anything (even kill themselves) to get away from it?
Oh dear

I hope they LISTEN
I hope that during the stand down, they make a SINCERE effort to LISTEN and to make adjustments to STOP THIS TRAGIC TRAGIC HORROR!
What ever the military was during WWII, the military is NOT that today... Nam vets got a taste of what these troops are being put through.
