25% VAT, All Hands on Deck
VAT=Value Added Tax. It looks like Chairman Obama wants a pit bull knocking on his door. The White House is considering a 25% Value Added Tax on everything we purchase. This would be used to pay for the proposed Nationalized Health Care Plan. It would be built in to the cost of everything we buy, so you would not see it as seperate line item on your receipt. You would just see the higher price- At the gas pump, grocery store, utility bill, car repair etc. If we were looking for something to get all fired about for the next TEA PARTY, it looks like we have found it... Unfortunately
It is very obvious this Government is doing everything in it's power to destroy this country. When I first heard of this last week, it just went in one ear, and out the other cause I didn't know what VAT meant. I do know. This might be the straw that breaks the Camels back. I'm not sure the Tea Party will be suffucient next time. it is time for a Tax Revolt and start refusing to pay income tax.

I think they are floating this and then will come up with a "compromise" a lā the misnamed "Fair Tax."
Both are a disaster.
And despite what "Fair Tax" proponents want. The income tax will not go away. We will get both.

What do they mean "ultimately?" VAT is immediately borne by the consumer. When the EC inaugerated their VAT, prices skyrocketed within hours!

If I understand VAT correctly [and I hope I don't], every step in making a product is taxed. Want to build a chair? The manufacturer gets taxed on the wood. He cuts and assembles it, gets taxed again. Stain and varnish, another tax. When value is added, it gets taxed. The result is products that no one can afford.
The idea of doing this to finance a nightmare of a controlled medical system that no one wants is unbelievable! Where the he** is the birth certificate? Send this clown back where he came from!

Yes, sort of.
Actually as I understand it, a single tax is levied say 25%. But each level of production is required to pay a certain portion of that 25%. So in effect, it is like a tax at every level, but there is an overall cap of 25%. Now, what the BASIS for that 25% is, that's a whole different story. I'm not sure how one can calculate a percentage on a final price if the final price also includes a portion of that percentage. I'm sure it's possible because Europe and Japan use it, as well as Canada. Maybe I've read wrong.
What I do know from people who live in those countries have said, is that it will most certainly make the price of EVERYTHING more expensive.
Additionally, the idea is that since local sales taxes will remain in place, this will be a boon to state coffers. (an 8% sales tax on a now $125 item will generate more revenue than 8% on the same item when it was $100)
Anyone advocating a VAT for revenue purposes is seriously math challenged.
The higher the price, the less people will buy it. If everything is more expensive, the less people CAN buy. This will actually decrease revenue.
In Ireland
It's 21% for products and 13% for services, although real estate brokers charge 21% on top of their fees. VAT isn't supposed to be charged on items considered essential but there's VAT on toothpaste. VAT is paid every step of the way in manufacturing and then again on the final product when sold. Plumbers pay VAT on supplies for example, which is a tax write off at the end of the year, they then charge VAT on there final bill to the customer. If it goes through things will get very expensive.

Forced medical treatment. First they force you to pay into a system you don't want. Then they will make it mandatory to use their "health care" and you will be a criminal if you don't. Then you will be fined for not getting your psychological and physical health screening or you will be put in jail for not submitting your children to the doctor gods.

This is the same thing as Canada's GST or Goods and Services
Tax that was supposed to be 'temporary' since 1991, and is still going strong at 5%. This is a tax on top of the provincial sales tax. It is as high as 13% in some Atlantic provinces.

I hope they raise our taxes an outrageous amount - it will only galvanize the opposition and make life miserable for the slugs that voted for it.
I don't buy much of anything anyways - it will only serve as a reminder to me to buy even less.
Rather than getting upset over this rumor, we should call their bluff and dare them to do something that stupid - natural consequences can be a wonderful thing to watch unfold.
