DP Book Club
Now that free Analog Television has been graciously cut off by our government, I have no more excuses left to keep me from reading books more often...
Just got this idea to keep us all reading and expanding our understanding of History and Liberty. While glancing at my copy of Dr. Paul's book "Revolution: a Manifesto," I noticed the "Reading List for a Free and Prosperous America"... Perhaps we could agree to read a book or two out of there, and hopefully others will choose it as well and eventually we will have a lot of people who have read the same books... and more DPers will be on the same page and real discussions will emerge...
There certainly are some classics here, and I'm sure some of us have already read a few of them ... just claim your reading material here and go for it. Once the book's discussion gets going, just start a new thread and link to it..., post your results and help out those DPers that still rely solely on the History Channel for their knowledge...
- The Creature from Jekyll Island - G. Edward Griffin
- The Road To Serfdom - F. A. Hayek
- Economics in One Lesson - Henry Hazlitt
- Democracy in America - Alexis De Tocqueville
- Dr. Zhivago - Boris Pasternak
- The Real Lincoln - Thomas DiLorenzo
- The New Dealers War - Thomas Fleming
- The Great Depression - Murray Rothbard
- History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire - Edward Gibbon
- The People's Pottage - Garet Garrett
- The Myth of the Robber Barons - Burton W. Folsom Jr.
- Wilson's War - Jim Powell
- Imperial Hubris - Michael Scheuer
- Age of Inflation - Hans Sennholz
- Antitrust and Monopoly - Dominick Armentano
- The March of Folly: From Troy to Vietnam - Barbara Tuchman
...and there's quite a few more... (Check your copy of "Revolution: A Manifesto")
Even if the book you are reading is not on Ron's "Free and Prosperous" reading list, and you want to discuss it, just post what you'll read or have read on this thread. And give a quick review of what it says, and Why it should (or shouldn't) be read, Then make your own thread for a discussion of the book.
With so many valuable (and worthless) books out there, someone who is either not a big reader or is new to the ideas of Ron could better understand his and our positions should they have a better understanding of history; let us start with ourselves...
... the bottom line is... lets expand the "books" forum of the DP. Go read a book and start a thread.

I guess I'll start...
I am currently reading "A Century of War" by John V. Denson. It is a short book at around 190 pages... the subtitle for the book is "Lincoln, Wilson, and Roosevelt," and it deals specifically with the causes of the War Between the States, and America's involvement in WW1 and WW2.
It is not on Ron's list, but the author is a strong noninterventionist and a part of the LvMI. I have enjoyed listening to his audio lectures ( I especially recommend "Six Months that Changed the World").
Soon I'll start a thread, review it, and convince/ dissuade you to read it too.

I really like this thread how it expands.

Eustice Mullins wrote the first book about the Federal Reserve
50 years ago. He went on to write many other pioneering works on monopolies, wars, cooporatism and Zionism. Many people have been inspired by him including GE Griffin and Ron Paul, some even view him as the fountain head behind the current liberty movement.
He is now 81 years old and just now being discovered. Listen to his videos and you will see why.

The Romantic Manifesto
Letter of Ayn Rand, is by Leonard Piekoff, but it is my favorite book because in her own words, in letters to fans, friends and family, she goes into deeper explaination of her books,

This is a great idea.
I have to admit to being a book-buying addict but I don't always get around to reading them (like the first two on your list).
I've got a libertarian book I've been meaning to read (I can't even remember the title). I'll dig it out and post the title. I've got "John Adams" by David McCullough sitting next to me collecting dust.
This would be a good way to get motivated to read.
Thanks!
May I suggest this book.
It's one of the best I ever read:

Let's take our country back by securing the blessings of Liberty and Freedom for Our Posterity
The Limits of Power
by Andrew Bacevich
I don't know about you, but I've had it with trying to explain to friends and family that allegiances to one political party or the other are a big part of the problem. Now I just buy them a copy of this book.
Andrew Bacevich is credible. He's a West Point graduate who retired a Colonel from the US army. He served in Vietnam. He holds a Ph.D. in American Diplomatic History from Princeton University. He taught at West Point and Johns Hopkins. He's currently a professor at Boston University. Colonel Bacevich lost a son in Iraq.
The book exposes the illusory differences between Republican and Democrat administrations, just as it outlines the real history of our disastrous foreign policies, the price we've paid for our inability to confront the truth, and the price we will continue to pay if we don't take responsibility for the actions of our government.
For people who are stuck in the matrix, it can be the red pill.
check out the mises review...
David Gordon reviewed this book and he had good things to say, with a few criticisms as well...check it out...

Interesting...
All in all a pretty good review of the book and I'm glad to see Mr. Gordon ends on a positive note. My personal opinion is that while you may agree or disagree with some of the author's theories and recommendations, the history he reveals is difficult to debate. It's a perspective you just don't get very often in print, and by someone who can be respected by both right and left.
I've found it to be an effective antidote to the endless partisan talking points and regurgitated soundbites that so often come from both my left and right-leaning friends and family members.

Paper Money
I am re-reading Paper Money by Adam Smith, my husband has the 1981 edition from his Columbia years.....Can't agree with all of it, but some of it was so foretelling, just about 30 years ago. I am in the middle of the part predicting the California real estate bubble. He was right just off on chronology. There is also an excellent chapter on economic apocalypse. Cool stuff including Disney Guard (private security forces).

ok
I vote you pick the first book for all of us
ha
oh, so you vote me book czar? Maybe democracy isn't the best way to go here...I certainly have no business trying to tell people as educated as DPers what they should be reading...
Here is an idea... how about we let the good doctor pick the books? I was looking through The Revolution: a Manifesto, which includes "A Reading List for a Free and Prosperous America"... how about we each pick our own book from this list, and one by one we will have read all of them, and we could start corresponding threads to each book, followed by discussions.
Again, don't put me "in charge" of this, I just thought it might be a good idea. This is going to be a holographic book club...haha

Decent ideas are a rarity here... much appreciated!
What?? No intrigue? No divisiveness? Could it be people of the same mind discussing (intelligently, no less) a common principle?
My God! This could work!
