Pittsburgh to host G-20 economic summit in September

Pittsburgh will host a summit of leaders from 20 of the world's largest economies Sept. 24 and Sept 25, the White House announced this afternoon.
The G-20, which last met in London in April, is made up of the finance ministers and central bank governors of 19 countries and the European Union.
The countries represent 85 percent of the world's economy, said White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs, who drew some laughter from the White House Press Corps when he announced Pittsburgh would host the summit.
President Barack Obama chose to host the summit in Pittsburgh to because of the region's recovery after the collapse of the steel industry, Gibbs said.
"It's an area that has seen its share of economic woes in the past but, because of foresight and investment, is now giving birth to renewed industries that are creating the jobs of the future," Gibbs said. "I think the president believes it would be a good place to highlight some of that stuff."
The summit will be at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown, according to Yarone Zober, chief of staff to Mayor Luke Ravenstahl. City leaders have been talking with White House officials for about a month about the possibility of hosting the summit.
"We're tremendously honored that Pittsburgh has been selected to be the host of the next G-20 summit," said "It's an opportunity to share our tale with the world as well as to make sure that there is an economic impact in Pittsburgh."
Ravenstahl and Allegheny County Executive Dan Onorato plan to form a host committee to ensure Pittsburgh "is putting its best foot forward" and that adequate police protection is in place to deal with the possibility of protesters, Zober said.
"We're talking about hundreds of people, delegations, President Obama, we're talking about thousands of guests and journalists from around the globe all being in Pittsburgh at the same time to really share Pittsburgh's story, and it's an opportunity to tell them why Pittsburgh is such a great place to be," Zober said.
"We were tremendously excited that they were even considering Pittsburgh. Ordinarily you would think Pittsburgh, really? Why not some larger city? But when they brought it up to us we told them why Pittsburgh," Zober said.

And Sarge, some protestors are certainly plants. You don't REALLY think EVERY protester is an agent provocatuer, do you? And even if they were, it is time to run them out of their game with real protesters.
