December 5th is Repeal Day
What is Repeal Day? I'm glad you asked. From the Repeal Day website at www.repealday.org:
The turn of the twentieth century was a dark time in America. The Women's Christian Temperance Union, which had been promoting Prohibition for many years, believed alcohol was the cause of many, if not all, social ills. Mistruths like this were spread. Lines were drawn. Bars and taverns were vandalized. People were killed. On January 16th, 1919, Congress passed the Volstead Act, outlawing alcohol and ostensibly putting an end to drunkenness, crime, mental illness, and poverty.
Ironically, America's thirst for alcohol increased during Prohibition, and organized crime rose up to replace formerly legal methods of production and distribution. While proponents of Prohibition argued that the amendment would be more effective if enforcement were increased, respect for the law diminished and drunkenness, crime and resentment towards the federal government ran rampant...
[Does this sound familiar to anyone? Do we have a modern-day parallel?]

Beer!
I drink beer every day, but I'll make a point to drink extra on December 5th! I'll twist my husband's arm, too!
Constitutional rights?
Looking at your website (very nice, btw!) I noticed you used the term "pay tribute to our constitutional rights."
I always make the point that the Constitution does not grant us our rights. As Jefferson and Madison argued, our rights are inherent in our humanity. The Constitution was written to *protect* our natural rights, not to grant them.
Something granted is, after all, a privilege, not a right. And privileges can be revoked. My right to put whatever I want into my body (including beer...mmmm beer...) was never up for vote.
Anyone interested in exploring this topic further may read Chapter 2 from Michael Badnarik's book Good to be King for free here:
http://www.constitutionpreservation.org/assets/chapter2.pdf
It's a very good primer on the idea, and something that really cemented the idea of *rights* in my thinking.
Thank you
For telling them and saving me from doing it one more time. Absolutely; and Badnarik communicates it better than anyone. Even better than reading it, watch one of his Constitution classes:

Mind-altering experience. Should be required viewing for everybody in the country. Monthly.
(And I just ordered two copies of the book...)
Thanks for making this vital
Thanks for making this vital distinction. I try to do the same whenever possible.
The Constitution doesn't tell the *people* what we can do -- it tells *government* what it can (and cannot) do.

Supporting Ron Paul raises IQ
A person's intelligence is higher when they are happy and I've never been so happy. Look out genius, here I come. Actually they are showing that positive words and intuition are the secret of all great persons throughout history, along with women. Aren't they always right? Go on, you just don't want to admit it. If everyone developed intuition in the country they would all know how to vote. Reading up on Emotional Intelligence helps a lot. It's being taught in the big corporations and on employment tests for most companies. Business is keeping up on the science. Every discipline is breaking all loose with new findings, doubling all new information every three and a half years with months perdicted. I think they said three days within about forty of fifty years. Only the subconscious can handle and sort all the changes going on in the world. Get your intuition today, you may need it for the election, all you campaign people. Oh, yeah, and study up. With all the new brain power you will have to feed it a lot of information, it's a hungry beast.
What, me worry?
Cheers!
You have just introduced me to my new favorite holiday! And all these years I thought it was Christmas! Wow.
Here's to the Army & the Navy,
And the battles that they've won.
Here's to America's colors,
The colors that never run.
Here's to freedom!
For a moment...
I thought this was going to be another call for donations.
Thankfully, all I have to do that day is buy some beer :)
