US ATTEMPTS TO RE-DEFINE SWITCHBLADES – WOULD MAKE MOST POCKET KNIVES ILLEGAL
U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP) has proposed revoking earlier rulings that assisted opening knives are not switchblades. The proposed new rule would not only outlaw assisted opening knives, its broad definition of a switchblade would also include one-handed opening knives and could be easily interpreted to cover most other pocket knives, even simple old-fashioned slip-joints.

Note that CBP's interpretation of the Federal Switchblade Act forms the basis for national, state and even local law and judicial rulings in many cases. This ruling by CBP is NOT limited to just imports. This WILL affect virtually everyone who carries a pocket knife, no matter the type!

Download the 63 page CPB document and read it for yourself.

Knife Rights has sent a letter to CBP requesting an extension to the ridiculously short 30-day comment period. We need your help to make an impression on CBP. They figured that they could slip this by everyone with little notice. We need to let CBP know that they are not going to get away with it; that we noticed and we are not happy and that we will not stand by while they take away our pocket knives.

We are in for the fight of our lives. We need you to write CBP NOW!

Click here for a Model Letter you can send to CBP.

However, the reality is that CBP isn't required to listen to our demands, but they do have to answer to Congress. After you send a letter to CBP, giving them notice they are not going to sneak this by us, the next step is to inundate Congress with emails and letters.

If you want to be free to carry your pocket knives in the future, you need to write your Senators and Representative TODAY!

Click here for a Model Letter you can send to Members of Congress.

We have also prepared a Communicating with Congress page that includes tips to maximize the effect of your letters. This page was developed after consultation with experts who understand exactly how to get your message across to Members of Congress. We have also included easy links to find your Representatives, if you don't know who they are or the best way to reach them. How much of an impact your communication has can be significantly impacted by how and what you write. Our aim is to help maximize your impact so your Members of Congress actually listen and do something. PLEASE, take a few minutes to review our Communicating with Congress page BEFORE you act.

Knife Rights was formed three years ago because we knew it was only a matter of time before something like this would happen that would threaten to take away our right to own and carry our knives. Well, that time is now and we're working to help keep our essential tools and essential rights. We cannot do it without your help. Knife Rights is only as powerful as the forces we can bring to bear. You are the only truly effective weapon we have. Policitcans only listen to voters. NOW IS YOUR TIME TO ACT!

Because you are sending a hard copy letter and emails via Members' web forms, we won't know you did it unless you let us know. It is critical that we be able to know how many have responded, so please click here to send us an email (customs@Kniferights.org) to let us know you've sent the letter and emails.

My 4" metal object caused airport panic and delays

A few years I made the unwitting mistake of attempting to bring a dangerous 4" metal object onto a US domestic flight. I was attempting to bring some bongo drums to my little nephew (partly to spite my no-good brother). So I had a gift wrapped box to carry on the plane with me. The TSA scanners found something suspicious so they "asked" me if they could open my gift wrapped box. Well, inside the box unbeknown to me was a 4" metal wrench used to adjust the surface tension of the drums. THEY TOOK IT. As if I was going to hijack the plane with a 4" bongo drum tightening wrench. In hindsight I look back on this event as an example of my maturity and control. Every fiber of my being was telling me to go berserk and start telling every TSA stoodge what I really thought of them and their stupid "job". But I didn't. I allowed them to save Western Civilization by taking my little bongo wrench.

The beginnnings of

this whole "knife paranoia" began back in the 50s when there were a number of TV shows and movies that showed "greaser gangs" carrying switchblades and menacing people.

So, liberals being the easily frightened types that they are, actually thought that things they see on TV are real, and decided they needed to stop this public menace.

So, they enacted switchblade bans.
Then they enacted other knife bans, based on what seemed to be scary to them.

However, just like all liberal banning, each ban has an exemption written into it, so that gov't employees may have these things if they want, because gov't employees are part of their gang.

I think this is a 2nd amendment issue

"the right to bear arms shall not be infringed"

Although bladed weapons are ancient armaments, they've obviously only cared about banning more modern ones, up to this point. Now they want to get rid of the primitive ones too?

They stop selling knifes, we

They stop selling knifes, we will make our own. Simple as that. Their choice.

Another over reach? How...

are we to now "skin" our congress critters without a pocket knife....?

Wow, this is BS

Pocket knives are useful for survival and self-defense...they want to make the sheeple completely defenseless!

Sickening really, I have a few pocket knives and I'm not giving them up...neither is my dad.

they can have my knife

when they pry my cold dead hands from it.

U.S. Customs has no legislative powers.

Further, their charter concerns what other people bring to the US. Surely they are not suggesting that we gather up all the illegal border crossers and be sure they don't have any illegal pocket knives on them!

Congress and the States are the ones who make laws.

And on that note, I find it quite ironic that I may legally carry (in most states) a 50 caliber magnum handgun that can crack an engine block, or that could shoot straight through four or five people standing in line, but I may not carry a pocket knife with a blade length in excess of four inches. Even with the various state laws infringing the "right" of the people to keep and bear arms by requiring them to pay a tax in order to exercise that 'right", they are still making it illegal to carry certain knives.

As it is now, the states have it so wrapped up already that the Feds are not necessary. But if our current helpless and passive situation isn't poor enough, I'm sure that new attempts will be made at regulating us even more.

Last week I saw a cow farmer, and in his overalls he had a pair of fingernail clippers. I'm pretty sure he doesn't have a license for those. I think I'll write my congressman right now. There's no telling how much more revenue and control can come from anti-clipper legislation.

My BIL is a trucker and was detained

at the Canadian border because he had a knife. It was actually a cig lighter with a small "switch blade type" blade. His personal belongings were searched, including his laptop comp. I don't recall all the details but he was not allowed past the border and they kept his "knife". They supplied him with a form he could send in to have his "knife" returned.

So it's another defacto ban

So it's another defacto ban by an alphabet agency? It won't ban the knives internally but from being imported, is that correct?

This is good though. How many of your sheepy family members carry a pocket knife? Many of mine do. This will be a great way to get them serious about changing things. Lawmakers are so stupid it floors me.

I already wanted to buy my 4 year old a .410 & .22 LR

Just based on the very real possibility that when he is 10 or so and I want to give him those things that I won't be able to purchase them. Now I need to go ahead and go down to the hardware and buy him a couple pocket knives.
