NRA straw poll Alert! Take Acton Now!
Submitted by englewolf on Wed, 11/28/2007 - 12:22Our efforts are paying off; I spoke with Angus at the NRA today and was told that the NRA is going to be sending out a straw poll to the members. I asked if the straw poll would include the candidates voting record and stance on our 2nd Amendment rights and was told that it did not.
The poll should list ALL candidates by name and their voting record.
Please call the NRA and ask them to revise the straw poll to include a list of ALL candidates by name and their voting record.
This will make a tremendous difference in the outcome of the poll!
Call and Email Alicia Borgess today. We need to act fast and in mass.

Another Major Campaign Error
M. Raborn I contacted the NRA today and received the same response as RP08IS Hope.
Thank you for contacting the NRA-ILA. Regarding your comments, Congressman Ron Paul was invited to the National Rifle Association's Celebration of American Values. The NRA did not receive a response from him. As a result, there is no mention of your candidate in the article. If Congressman Paul had accepted the invitation, or contacted the NRA prior to the event, every effort would have been made to accommodate his appearance. In fact, NRA did work with a number of candidates who did not RSVP and we facilitated their appearance in person or via videotaped message. The same courtesy would have been given to the Ron Paul campaign had they contacted us. If and when the NRA has another candidate forum, we would hope that Congressman Paul would participate - either in person, or via videotaped message.

If this is true, this is a MAJOR ERROR on the campaigns part. The NRA is politically very influential. Many of their readers, follow their recommendations closely. This is a large voting block. Personally we have canceled our membership, because we were unhappy with some of the candidates they have supported in the past. However, this time it appears that indeed, it was Congressman Paul's own campaign that is at fault. I do not care to hear any more excuses about, being short staffed or being overwhelmed. It is the volunteers that are getting his message out and raising money. Can't the campaign simply respond to invitations. I guess not, because there have been repeated stories of the campaign staff ignoring inviations and not respondiing to calls. When Congressman Paul learns of such poor performance, I hope he will reorganize his campign staff and bring the campaign home to Texas where we understand effeciency and courtesy. Such reorganization is not unusual. Several presidential candidates have already gone through major reorganization in their campaign staffs. I just fear that Congressman Paul is not being informed as to how poorly his staff is performing. Because he is now getting all the attention and raising loads of money, he believes his campaign is doing a good job, however it is the volunteers that are having to overcome the short comings of his staff. (Now I do not need Jean Akin to tell me how professional the staff is. Check their resumes and tell me what qualifies any of them to oversee a national presidential campaign. Then check the FEC reports and I think you will find they are being paid above their qualifications, while they tell us we need to make more and more monetary sacrifices.) I will apologize if the NRA falsely accused the campaign staff, however, since this is such a common complaint, I think the saying "where there is smoke, there must be fire" is probably true in this case.

HEADS UP -- re: NRA Poll
EVERYONE -- PLEASE ACT ON THIS NOW! All it takes is an email to:
ILA-Contact@nrahq.org
I am re-posting from earlier in hopes more will see see this! The polls HAVE gone out to all NRA members; Ron Paul IS included; NO voting records or 2nd Amendment statements are included for ANYONE.
We need to bombard the NRA with requests that they email their entire mailing list that got the Poll sent to them and ask that they provide this information so that their members can make a truly informed decision when they fill out the poll.
Please, DO IT NOW! LAST CHANCE TO AFFECT THIS OUTCOME AT ALL!
This is what I posted earlier today:
NRA STRAW POLL
On November 28th, 2007 Rubiebaby says:
Just got off the phone with Angus (nice guy!) -- Ron Paul IS included on the poll, but the ballots have already been sent out and they do NOT have anything on them about candidates stance on 2nd Amendment nor their voting record.
I asked if it could be possible to do some entry on their web page, and maybe send a special email to all members that will be receiving the poll so that they WOULD give that information. He said he would forward that suggestion.
Do you think it would have more impact if a LOT of us also asked to have updated info provided to their members via email? Seems like it might!
I wrote them...
I am a fairly new gun owner and I am currently waiting to see if I wish to join a gun organization. But I will only join one that endorses Ron Paul.
Here is what I sent:
Hello,
I recently became a gun owner and am a big proponent of the 2nd amendment. I also wish to join a gun owners organization, such as, the NRA. However, I must wait to see which politician each organization endorses before I make my decision. I am well informed and know the difference between a true constitutional conservative and a liberal trying to pretend to be a conservative(Guiliani). I will not tell you who I support, but the choice you have to make is plainly obvious. Take great care in choosing your endorsement, because there is really only two viable choices for the IRA to choose between; of which one of them has a poor public policy record and will only score brownie points with religious southerners. The other will irritate the liberal wannabe Republicans (Bush/Guiliani/McCain/Romney/Thompson), but will score major points with religious westerners like myself or any other American-loving Patriot who wants to restore the Constitution to its former glory.
Thank you for your time,

I figured they had heard enough of Ron Paul supporters, so I left his name completely out of it. I just wanted to be honest with them and let them know that the decision they have to make is a very important one. Perhaps they can do what Hillary would do...support Ron Paul in CA, Huckster in Alabama, Rudy in (well I am not sure where his support comes from, certainly not NYC), but I think you get the point. But they cant do that and I will be watching the NRA now. :)

Back in October
I got a reply like that from them back in October. However my view is that they should have information on every candidates voting record on the NRA website. As a member of the NRA it is no concern to me if he went to the NRA convention or not. I just want the facts. It sounds like they are saying that they will punish Ron Paul for not showing up.
Don't let up on the pressure. Keep calling and emailing. It is time to push them hard. Clog the phone lines!
You are correct. This isn't
You are correct. This isn't about pressing the flesh and schmoozing. The only concern of the NRA should be to evaluate the record of every candidate in every election at face value, and rate them all objectively based on their second amendment credentials.
Period.

The funny thing about the reply I got back
This is the e-mail I sent:
Please revise your straw poll to include ALL [not just a few] candidates by name and their voting record.
Thank you in advance and even though I do not own a gun I believe our second amendment rights, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms" should be upheld along with all of our original amendments in the United States Constitution.
I didn't mention Ron Paul's name and specifically mentioned the straw poll. Automatic e-mail ... hmm.
I am a voting member and
I am a voting member and l wrote an email.
My letter writing and others are starting to pay off with CATO. They finally mentioned "their friend Ron Paul", who is "remarkable", in the latest letter sent out this week. They are feeling the hurt as people are giving to Paul instead of the Club for Growth. We are having an impact.
I think some organizations are afraid to endorse Paul, but will come out of hiding real soon, when they realize we are for real.
We are having an impact.
Yes we are so let's not let up. Keep putting on the pressure.
Keep calling and emailing.
Here's what I just sent the NRA...
As a past NRA member and current NRA supporter at heart, gun owner, etc… I’m very anxious to understand if the NRA is as supportive of Ron Paul as they can be during this important time. I’m not aware of any republican or democratic candidate that has been friendlier to the 2nd Amendment than Ron Paul. The NRA’s lack of support for Ron Paul is alarming to me and I will advise my family, fellow Ron Paul supporters, and hunting buddies of this contradiction until I learn otherwise that the NRA is supportive of Ron Paul’s bid for the Presidency. His campaign is breaking records for fundraising and his poll numbers are growing exponentially. I’m doing everything I can to spread his HONEST word and message.
Was Dr. Ron Paul invited to the candidate symposium that the NRA held in September of this year, or was he not invited? I would appreciate knowing. The Ron Paul supporters are all abuzz and dismayed right now because we feel the NRA has snubbed the MOST ARDENT SUPPORTER of the 2ND AMENDMENT currently running for president.
I’m highly concerned about this issue, and as someone who just spent over $2,000 at an NRA fundraiser in Merced, California this past Spring, I EXPECT the NRA to issue a statement to the campaign of Ron Paul explaining that the NRA will do what every they can reasonably do to be fair to Ron Paul. I do not ask that the NRA make any preferences known (because that is premature), only that it be made clear that the NRA is supportive of, and fair to Ron Paul.
I have long defended the NRA against those that want to undermine it’s credibility (especially here in Pelosi’s, Boxer’s, and Feinstein’s state of California). Please do the same for Ron Paul.

I received an email from Alicia today. I basically said the same thing.. except I added that the NRA sticker on my truck was coming off and that if they did not pull thier heads out in the next couple of weeks i was joining Gun owners of America. ( which I am going to do anyway) I was not nice.. the time for being nice has passed with these so called conservative organizations who only know the status quoe! THERE IS NO OTHER CANDIDATE THAT THE NRA CAN SUPPORT OTHER THEN RON PAUL. WETHER HE CAN WIN OR NOT (I know he can) THEY SHOULD BE SUPPORTING HIM ON PRINCIPLE! THEY SHOULD HAVE ENDORSED HIM IN APRIL!

and you have to be a member for several years or be a life time member to get voting status. I have already notified the NRA that if the organization does not endorse Dr. Paul that I will NOT be renewing my membership.
Same Here
I told them the same thing back in October.
We are going to have to turn the fire up a notch. Keep calling and emailing them.
Sent E-Mail about Straw Poll
I thanked her in advance. I also told her that I don't own a gun but our second amendment rights are important and should be upheld.
NRA poll
I just got off the phone with Alicia (9:45 am Pacific Time) She said the poll has not yet gone out and that it does not have the voting records on the poll.
Keep calling!
Straw Poll
Just emailed Alicia!
Good Morning Alicia,
I am emailing to enquire about your straw poll that will be going out to members. I would very much be interested to know how the candidates stand on this issue (their voting records)
Will you be providing any information like that? I have researched several candidates, and I think this would be a great way to give your members the information that they need in order to make an informed decision.
Warm Regards,
Chris Wiebe
Thanks
Just wrote Alicia a very nice letter of support, both patting the NRA on the back as well as of course "encouraging" their support of Ron...at least with a proper presentation of voting records on their straw poll.

Great Idea
I'll get off an email to Alicia right now.
Done
My letter:
Alicia,
Time to embrace Ron Paul.
Thousands of Ron Paul volunteers have been working gun shows across America all summer and fall spreading the message of freedom for gun owners.
The NRA has lost focus and I predict will lose massive numbers of members eventually, when the membership realizes they've been sold out to insurance peddlers by the NRA.
Wake up.
You can start by including Ron Paul on your web site.
Once we succeed in getting Congressman Paul elected, we will systematically expose every neo-conservative special interest group - like the NRA - that has abused the trust of true conservative supporters.

...they are going to have all candidates on the poll.
...she wasn't sure if their record would be included or not.
Keep up the pressure on the NRA
Angus said the NRA is getting a lot of calls about Ron Paul and they are looking at putting info about him on the website. Keep the pressure on them.
We must push the NRA very hard to get them to put the voting records on the poll. This will make a big difference in the outcome.
