True and none of them have read Title VIII of the proposed Waxman-Markey House bill allowing investment banks, hedge funds and other speculators to participate in carbon credit futures, aka derivatives
Most of the socialists I have talked to (including some of my friends) are more or less state apologists. Instead of being driven by principle or ideology they are guided by an affection for the state. For example, they may hate walmart on the basis that it is private. If the government nationalized it or used eminent domain to build one then it would be a fine institution. In other words, anything the state does is legitimate and having economic liberty would undermine state benevolence.
I thought I would be able to relate to some of my left-leaning friends in regards to corporate welfare or even the war issue but this turned out to be futile. It turns out they are pro corporate welfare because the government will make sure it goes towards a good cause and war is necessary because the government is protecting us. I found out I have 0% in common with these people because I cannot argue with state apologists. It just doesn't work.

“Frankly, we may get to the point where the only way of saving the world will be for industrial civilization to collapse.” -Maurice Strong quoted in the September 1, 1997 edition of National Review magazine.
"The common enemy of humanity is man. In searching for a new enemy to unite us, we came up with the idea that pollution, the threat of global warming, water shortages, famine and the like would fit the bill. All these dangers are caused by human intervention, and it is only through changed attitudes and behavior that they can be overcome. The real enemy then, is humanity itself." -Club of Rome, premier environmental think-tank consultants to the United Nations
"We've got to ride this global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing in terms of economic and environmental policy." - Timothy Wirth, President of the UN Foundation
"No matter if the science of global warming is all phony... climate change provides the greatest opportunity to bring about justice and equality in the world." - Christine Stewart, fmr Canadian Minister of the Environment

No hope with these people
they are hooked line and sinker to the global warming BS. Carbon is bad, the world would be better if there was only 1 million people etc.

This could work then!
Tell them if they are SOoOo interested in the topic, can they be the ones to volunteer to stop leaving a carbon foodprint?
It would serve a two-fold purpose.. we'll be raising the IQ of the planet at the same time!
