"Convincing evidence" indicates that marijuana smoke damages the genetic material DNA in ways that could increase the risk of cancer, according to European scientists who used highly sensitive new test.
Their study is scheduled for the June 15 issue of ACS’ Chemical Research in Toxicology, a monthly journal.
Rajinder Singh and colleagues note that toxic substances in tobacco smoke can damage DNA and increase the risk of lung and other cancers. However, there has been uncertainty over whether marijuana smoke has the same effect.
Scientists are especially concerned about the toxicity of acetaldehyde, present in both tobacco and marijuana. However, it has been difficult to measure DNA damage from acetaldehyde with conventional tests.
The scientists describe development and use of a modified mass spectrometry method that showed clear indications that marijuana smoke damages DNA.
“In conclusion, these results provide evidence for the DNA damaging potential of cannabis [marijuana] smoke, implying that the consumption of cannabis cigarettes may be detrimental to human health with the possibility to initiate cancer development,” the article states. “The data obtained from this study suggesting the DNA damaging potential of cannabis smoke highlight the need for stringent regulation of the consumption of cannabis cigarettes, thus limiting the development of adverse health effects such as cancer.”

Smoking plain pot you are only inhaling smoke, with cigarettes you are inhaling smoke + a chemical mixture such as nicotine and tar.
Besides, smoking pot is the dumbest way to get the benefits from the plant. The proper thing that will start to be done when pot becomes legal, is to boil it in butter and use that for cooking, this allowes you to get more benefit from the plant without the smoke. There is another way to use this with vaporizers that puts the THC into a bag which you then inhale THC laced air.

He is fighting the FDA, which is contradicting itself, saying marijuana is dangerous and of no medical value, while approving Sativex and Marinol. Chances are the companies producing these drugs are the same ones paying to have other tests done.
So this Dr. Grinspoon, representing Harvard Medical School, says there are only two things wrong with marijuana.
1. Marijuana is expensive.
2. Marijuana is expensive because it is illegal.

I was counting on the DNA damage. Maybe the "high" is that pleasant experience of oneness with the universe I get after smoking? ( Right before I rip the door off the fridge and eat everything). Could it be true? Smoking pot makes you "high"? But I have been attempting to alter my DNA for many years, and pot never made me take an axe and give anyone 40 whacks.

She was a puffer of herb and took me to the smoking section of school -- behind the perverbial bleechers during Algebra class (she came late to class and motioned me from the hallway -- with lavatory pass in hand I chased the green dragon).
I didn't know how to work the choker (carb hole) -- I played that pipe like a bird whistle flute: Bird Flute
What can I say -- I fell in love (the girl was nice too).
It was a 6 year afair -- with occaisional 3 month lung-cleansing.
At 20 I gave up alcohol for life -- My wife was pregnant.
At 22 I gave up pot -- to be a good example for my daughter, but mostly so I could focus on meditation development.
I found in meditation the "switch" that previously only marijuana could flick. Now I turn on (low cost) -- only have to "pay" attention. Smile.
With drugs the "travel" is the joy being brought to you (where you are at emotionally - mentally) -- With meditation the "travel" is you going to the joy (where it resides) -- into the superconscious mind; infinite expansion and ever-increasing sobriety.
Drugs require no talent -- Meditation requires super-refinement of attention; therefore, it helps in all areas. The "leap of faith" in the beginning is that prolonged attention in sobriety can lead to joy/bliss.
It can and does.
