Virginia GOP to require loyalty oaths for primary election

GOP will demand 'oath' of February primary voters

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) -- If you're planning to vote in Virginia's February Republican presidential primary, be prepared to sign an oath swearing your Republican loyalty.

The State Board of Elections on Monday approved a state Republican Party request to require all who apply for a GOP primary ballot first vow in writing that they'll vote for the party's presidential nominee next fall.

There's no practical way to enforce the oath. Virginia doesn't require voters to register by party, and for years the state's Republicans have fretted that Democrats might meddle in their open primaries.

Virginia Democrats aren't seeking such an oath for their presidential primary, which is held the same day -- February 12th.

I can't imagine how this could be construed as constitutional. Furthermore, I find it disturbingly proto-fascist/proto-Stalinist in nature. It's ironic as well, since, here in Illinois, delegates to the Republican National Convention are required to take an oath that they are not communist.

That's 1984 for ya.

Better step up now

They're obviously trying to steel themselves for Ron going independent in the event that he is denied the GOP nomination. Those in Virginia had better step up now and nip this thing in the bud.

What's the problem here?

If you don't like the GOP in virginia you're free to join or create any other party you'd like.

It's freedom of choice. I don't see the big deal.

Well this is just the tip of the iceburg folks it going to get a lot worse as the power elites see their power threatened. Any Lawyers voting for Ron Paul want to see if they can get an injunction to stop this? Not sure what grounds as I don't know WV law or their constitution. However I would bet there are several grounds on which this could be shut down.

Bullshit

As a Virginia citizen, I'm definitely appalled. No way can this be enforced or even passed.

I agree! There's no way I'm

I agree! There's no way I'm pledging loyalty to anyone other than Ron Paul. If he isn't the candidate, I certainly won't be voting for the Republican nominee. They have no right to tell us we have to vote for whoever is chosen.
