Ron Paul: Moving Towards Tobacco Prohibition 6/15/09

0 votes

Ron Paul talks about the disastrous tobacco legislation that recently passed, which simply amounts to more liberties taken away for "our own good."

"Bills like this take us down exactly the wrong path. Instead of gaining more freedom with marijuana, we are moving closer to prohibiting tobacco. Our prisons are already bursting with non-violent drug offenders. How long will it be before a black market in tobacco fills the prisons with non-violent cigarette smokers?"

Bump

I am try to figure out the scam in this. The government will lose all those tax dollars but fill the prisons. Must be more money in prisons than tax dollars.

Time to grow your own?

So much silly and obtrusive law comes out of DC that I figure it is time to just disobey. They hate that. Grow your own. Sell under the table. Deprive them of revenues. (They hate that).

Now we have some equality, and that's as good as liberty, right?

I worked in healthcare for about 20 years, mostly with old folks. I cannot count how many people I saw whose health was ravaged by cigarette smoking. I can count on an amputated hand how many people I saw whose lives were ravaged by marijuana. I PERSONALLY know three physicians who did stints in rehab for coke. My in-laws family are living poster children for what alcohol does for you.

I have argued for decriminalization / legalization (I know they are different, I just want the insanity to stop. We have to start somewhere) for decades. My argument has often been the inconsistency of the severity of the "crime" and the zeal with which it is prosecuted. I will point to in the inconsistency of the laws that allow cigarettes and alcohol to be peddled but not pot. Well, at lteast we are fixing part of that problem...

Oh, wait. Prohibition still does not work. Nor does trying to legislate morality, or even good sense.

Truth exists, and it deserves to be cherished.

Another intrusion on

out liberty. Everyone knows that smoking is bad for you. So are a lot of other things we do. Some harmful, some dangerous, but do we want or need the govt. telling us how to live our lives? This nanny state is getting worse all the time and the pace since BO was elected has increased dramatically. Now a tax on soda is being considered. What next?

A black market is already coming...

as a result of the new federal tax added to cigarrettes. Maybe the Obama-Puppets will start to wake up now and realize that Obama isn't even a good social liberal. Next they'll ban heavy metal and southpark for being to controversial. Sometimes I think the social right needs to join with the progressive left since they are almost identical.
