Poll for the Group: Should We Subdivide the Off-Topic Threads?

0 votes

Now, everything is Michael's call, so this poll is just to gauge group opinion.

I wish we got along as well on this site as we did a year ago. I was here a year ago, and while there was certainly flaming (and I did some of it), it didn't seem as negative, to me, as it is now.

Furthermore, there was once a time, long ago, when there were a lot of posts about Ron Paul and Constitutional Liberty here, in addition to all the off-topic stuff. There was a sort of balance, in my opinion.

You can say whatever you want, but a thread with a title like "The US Constitution; making theft and murder ‘legal’ since 1787" cannot, in any way, be reconciled with "Daily Paul: Dedicated to restoring Constitutional Government to the United States of America."

It seems to me now that there are more posts that are against constitutional liberty here than there are that are actually for it...and Ron Paul only seems to appear when someone bumps the video clips on the frontpage.

Question: Would you favor Michael creating a second forum for off topic subjects, that have nothing to do with Ron Paul or restoring constitutional government to the United States of America?

I think 4 suggestions sound good

1. Consider categorizing "Off topic", while not censoring. This way, people know that it's off topic without realizing it after the fact.

2. A disclaimer. This is a free-for-all forum. People will say the darndest things here. Plenty of things will be offensive to the genreal Ron Paul supporter and would be considered anti- Ron Paul himself. Therefore, a disclaimer should be known to the world that Ron is the top class guy but he does not necessarily support or is even aware of the topics being discussed at this site. This way he cannot be pinned like that New Republic Newsletter.

3. Limit self bumpers to 2-3 self bumps per topic. Self bumping is stupid at a certain point.

4. Give SUBSCRIBERS some extra perks of some sort. I know this is extra work for Nystrom, but this could help him to attract more subscribers. Advertisers love registered users and cream their jeans for subscribers.

I'm in favor of personal

I'm in favor of personal responsibility, so this would tend to make people more responsible for the statements they make here.

That should answer your question. I wonder if Sentinel has asked him about his little oopsy.

Successful websites

are easier to break than they are to make. I was also concerned when some of the comments here began showing up on msm sites. So I get the issue of how we are perceived and I see the trouble with the flame wars. I just don't think bending to conformity is the solution.

Actually, I think the idea of an "anything goes" forum sounds good at first -a place where you can post whatever you want and subject it to the thoughts of fellow DPers... But I think that's what many of us would like as the face of DP: an example of something that is not over-regulated and creativity is given free reign... If we could all learn how to keep our noses out of threads we don't agree with like big boys and girls, or learn how to disagree without being disagreeable, then I think this place could fix itself without intervention.

I had been thinking of some kind of disclaimer for the site, and I saw yesterday that someone already posted the idea below. When any media outlet who tries to slander Dr. Paul, Michael, or anyone else here for comments made by anyone on this site, they (media) can rightfully be chastised for not reading and/or not understanding the disclaimer.... A disclaimer that should be common sense anyway.

Anyway, that's my 2 cents. I give credit to Kevin for starting a discussion that's been long overdue.

Subdivide (my two cents)

I totally agree - if you want to talk off topic (believe me I read TONS of the off topic stuff for information and just for a laugh in many cases)

But we should keep DailyPaul about Dr. Paul and how we are going to get liberty candidates elected.

2012 EVERY ONE is going to see HOW bad Congress and Obama is - I have people telling me they wished they had voted for Ron Paul in 2007/2008 - I have Neo CONS tell me that RP would have been 300% times better even with all they disagree with him on - Let's subdivide and keep the RP stuff only at the top !!!! if you want to blog or chat about other stuff just make an Other stuff tab and have people who want to discuss 911 and all the other STUFF out there on that tab!!!

"Many of us agree that you and I have no right to use coercion against people who don't owe us anything. The same prohibition applies to groups of people who constitute the government. The reason is simple: unjust acts do not become just when legalized. "

Should this vote be limited

to just those that are mods, paid subscribers, donors, and supporters of the advertisers?
If you haven't contributed one dime to this site, should you be telling others where they should go and what they should do?
Think about that for a second, and if you haven't done any of the above, then maybe you should visit the donate page, and then jump into the discussion.
I would bet a couple of the most vocal control freaks, haven't contributed a dime to Michael.
They have a handful of places where they could go...... ronpaul.com ronpaulforums.com and campaignforliberty.com and discuss nothing but Ron Paul, but they don't. They continue to punish the rest of us with their whimpering.

Secondly, I love the way the DP is laid out, just the way it is. The format at Ron Paul forums is like needles to my eyes. It looks about as exciting as a square dance at a nursing home. Graphically speaking, the DP is most pleasing to the eye IMO.

Let's face it, the DP is the most visited site out of all of them, BECAUSE of the VARIETY of info. If it were limited to what the whiners want, the DP would be a ghost town, like the rest of them. Maybe that's what they want.

I personally don't see a problem with an action section, and an information section. The people who wanted to talk could talk, and the people that wanted to walk could walk.
But to create a "free speech zone" for the DP is the very thing we are against. Personal responsibility comes into play of course, and most abide by that.
But, some seem to be more interested in keeping their personal agenda at the top, by continuing to self bump, or creating some inflammatory topic so that it gets attention. How about reading what others have to share, instead of just waiting to bump your stuff back to the top?

The time for talk is growing short, no matter what the subject. I'm afraid we are close to some really nasty things happening in the near future. The ones who haven't gotten it by now are in for some big surprises, and frankly, for a small handful here, I hope their "awakening" is especially rude.

Well, I'm not attempting to censor anything.

I just proposed a theoretical solution that I felt might quell some of the flaming, the conflicts, the squabbling, the calling out of others, and the general gross violation of Michael's posted guidelines.

Some of you may not realize these things might be perceived by others as a problem. Michael may not perceive it as a problem, either. I have no idea. It's his site and his rules. Let him decide.

I had my say. I'm butting out.

I don't mind sifting thru the threads. I learn how they think.

The DP attracts discerning and sagacious seekers of truth. I didn't even know what a troll was, until I followed the comments, and began to have a feel for identifying trolls.
And, there are priorities that will be the good fight againts feudalism, but who would have guessed . . . that for example . . . the small family farmers around the world are and have been attacked from all sides, from guns to regulation and preserving and growing the small family farm is a very important step in regaining cultures world wide, including the black mail of 84% control of resources of the U.S. by off shore interest.

Or, the imense impact the cannabis/hemp industry is upon the economies of the world.
Kinda like this, Obama is a distraction and those behind him are very secretive. These trolls tip their hand often.
The mods did a great job subduing the name calling and bantering on threads, and that was big for me. Name calling is distracting.

And never forget, “Humans, despite our artistic pretensions, our sophistication and many accomplishments, owe the fact of our existence to a six-inch layer of topsoil and the fact that it rains.”

Opinions are like buttholes… Everybody has one.

Please, keep your stinking opinions to yourself and keep your greasy mitts off my Daily Paul. This site is just fine the way it it, including its occasional faults. We don't need no stinking thought police.

The answer to your question is not only No!… But HELL No!!!!

Start your own web site if you are not happy with this one. There is not much room for improvement on the DP thanks to Michael.

Alternatively, Mike may appreciate the opinions and make changes to best suit the DP users. This is the same theory behind "infiltrating" the GOP to change it. Don't knock it till you've tried it.

His opinoin is that of the people in this thread that

have said no.

But I'll give you an A for effort. At least you've tried, be it in vain, to control the topics discussed.

that being said, am I free to have uncontrolled thought officer?

Attempt at censorship

Leave it alone.

It is what it is.

Free exchange of ideas.

People look at a thread and decide if the want to jump in.

What is the matter with it?

You don't like something? Don't click on it.

The topics you don't like are "frightening people away?"

My friends son (USMC) takes a walk in Iraq everyday waiting to get shot at...that is frightening.

If someone is so much of a pu$#@ that they are frightened by a topic we will be fine without them.

They need to go to Huffington post and read mass media garbage and complete their indoctrination process.

This is a free area if you don't like it, start your own controlled/managed area.

There are a host of FEAR purveyors who post their FEAR messages here and we know who they are and can ignore them at will.

Need I remind you that the crazies are the heroes.

In a world of lies the man who speaks the truth is regarded as a crazy.

I am shocked that this site would even consider taking the action to censor the debate.

You are going to decide what is off topic?

All media forums have GATEKEEPERS, Is that what you want to be?

I have posted at other sites...the major sites are always controlled by GATEKEEPERS.

You applying for the gatekeeper job?

This is a political site...right?

McFadden filed charges against the fed and the treasury in 1933 and they are SITTING at the judiciary committee DOING NOTHING.

What does this tell you, sir, about every congressman for the last 76 YEARS?

9/11 is "off topic"? It is distasteful? 3000 people are dead and the Air force was on exercises? The DOD has "lost" trillions of dollars in the last 10 years and we at the DP are frightening people away? As we fight over the truth?

"Let's fight less over the truth...because some people's "truth" is not what we agree with...."

You may be selling, but, I am not buying.

The New York Times is fully controlled and censored. They trumpeted the passing of the Fed act in 1913 as the action that would finally stabilize our economy.

The New York Times is controlled media. We are too, but, less controlled than they are. Yes the threads are horrible, but some of them are brilliant....live with it...there is light and there is darkness...welcome to planet Earth.

Unify

Censorship only refers to gov't action

What is the proper term for this?

For the record I'm easy with anything that happens.

I doubt that making categories would keep people from posting just about anywhere anyway though . The Idea of information is to keep it mainstream . If you subdivide the Ideas and the news it becomes like MSM . Another way for people to hide in their little shells of complacency against the things they don't want to have to think about.
