The Business Owner Hypochondriac?
I provide business services in all 50 states, I have successfully run my own company for 2 years now. I try to go through my list at least once a year (4 year old list from when I was an emolyee, updated and dead leads are purged every year)
The list is 20,000-30,000 business owners (usually between 500k - 10 Mil in sales, 2-20 employees)
As things slow down for everyone, I have had to resort to making a mad dash to contact as many people as I can to try and drum up some business
I can tell you that at least 1/4 of the businesses that I have kept on my list have closed or are planning on closing, the remaining 3/4 are ALL saying they are just trying to survive. I'm wondering how much of this is a "news play"
I'm starting to think that many people have been told the economy is doing terrible so many times, that they just assume it is, despite their positive revenue and no drop in actual business.
Any thoughts on this?

On the Gulf Coast I was just interviewed again by the same HR man that took my application in January. He seemed surprised I wasn't hired the first time around but then told me that for every job posted at the casino...there were 300-400 applicants.
Very competitive.
What's your business?

The news play is the coverup of how truely bad it is and will be

No hope?
C'mon Sir, I'm not doubting Ron's predictions, but if it is going to be as bad as you say it is, what can we do do help rebuild america after the coming economic collapse. Giving people hope is the first step in recovering. (not the obama fluff hope)
I don't know
I live in the Emerald Triangle where medical marijuana is legal and since our economy is based on that, the only thing that has changed here are property values increased.
Part of me believes that the economy is fine and people are worried.. Obama has not brought the change they were hoping... If Bush was hate, Obama is fear....
I believe a possitive attitude is worth more than gold, or medical marijuana.

I love that place

My husband's business, masonry
is almost completely dead, and has been slow for almost 2 years now. My son, also a brick and stone mason is in an area in Montana where there are many very ultra wealthy people, and there is barely any building work there either. He is now, although an extremely talented stone mason, is now delivering pizza to feed his seven children. He had NO work all winter and has only a couple week job now, and none in the future so far. My business, upholstery, however, is ok,and better than usual, but it is only part time, which is all I can do anyway, as I grow all our food, and live mostly self sufficiently, which takes a lot of time. I imagine that upholstery is doing better because of the bad economy. People instead of buying new cars, houses, etc, are redoing what they have, and repairing what they have.
I agree. Its very hairy out
I agree. Its very hairy out there, I really think that the RPR could take something from this, maybe pushing a bright-side angle to help stimulate the economy. I know its easy to join Ron and be a doomsayer, but are we contributing to the pain by pushing the weight of the world onto everyones shoulders. I know exposing the truth is the most important thing, and the truth is ugly, but maybe we can put a clown nose on the problem and cheer some people up, maybe even help our country. I dont know how to do it, but maybe someone here does
What is the bright side?

We are Mr. O'Dell! We are the brightside
we're Americans, we are resiliant, the fabric of this country is that we take on challenges and win. The Unbreakable American Spirit of Freedom and Liberty. people like Ron Paul speaking truth to power, people like you and the rest of the Daily paul community.
Maybe we need to offer a little hope in our message too!
What tangible part of the economic mess is "the bright side"
"What was taken from the boomers, it ain't there, what was taken from the X'ers it ain't there, what is being taken from their great, great, great squared grandchildren it ain't there. Some generation just has to have the guts to quit passing it on." Me

house prices dropping to
house prices dropping to affordable levels, people are staying closer to home and shopping locally. Gold is on the rise, people are less likely to spend their money on silly things such as Hummers, the Americans have come back to earth. I also think an important aspect is intangable, I know its not what you asked, but as people try to save money, they stay home more than they did, hopefully helping the family units become closer.
Too bad you aren't a part of the real world.
You are delusional.

But how much of that is just
But how much of that is just made up? Its just fear, do we need to tell America to keep its head up? Maybe a brighter message from the RPR?
The whole system is just made up. I notice more calls when
the news talks "green shoots", but I also get a lot of new customers who don't understand what's happening and are trying to increase business. When your waiting for you customer to get paid by his customer who is waiting to get paid from his customer who is waiting to get paid from his customer, it's hard to get paid so fast or as often anymore.
I used to have employees, two big shops and a tv commercial. Now I have one guy and a network of different sized shops we rent for the day for installs. It's gone from 10-12 vehicles a week to 3-5 a month.
And the tough times are still to come. I am hoping for hyperinflation because I've always wanted to have a million dollars. So what if it only buys a candy bar. ;)

maybe we should get into wheelbarrow sales?
O'Dell, can you get us a connection? I know a guy who can put dollar sign logos on the sides of the product
The problem of having too much of something
and then trying to solve that problem by creating more of that something doesn't make any sense.
The problem was too much money that didn't exist, the solution was not to create more money that didn't exist.
People are scared to spend money right now, for me personally I knew the "recession" started in Nov 2007 just by looking at my sales graphs. I further know that the "depression" started in Oct 2008. If they ever admit this I will be surprised. But, looking at and talking to other business owners, my suppliers, and customers I think these two dates are accurate.
And, remember back in 2007 & 3/4 of the way into 2008 the MSN said nothing but how wonderful the economy was. So tell me what was just made up? The money & debt created by the FED was what was made up. Not folks legitimate concerns that they may need 100 bucks pretty soon to get a 1/4 tank of gas.

I couldn't agree with you
I couldn't agree with you more, the last good month for me was Nov 2008, most of which was carryover from october.
Thanks for your input, this is why I put this post up
