Countdown to Iowa Straw Poll
Submitted by Michael Nystrom on Sat, 07/28/2007 - 00:00
The Iowa straw poll is critical for a number of reasons. There is a vast amount of press coverage, and the nation’s eyes will be on Iowa for the day. This is a tremendous opportunity to display Congressman Paul’s strength of support to a national audience. Also, success at the Straw Poll is a strong indicator of success at the Caucus. It is the next big step on the road to the White House. Candidates who fail to perform adequately at the Straw Poll often remove themselves from the race shortly after. Because the Straw Poll requires people to show up and spend their money, it is a truer test of a candidate’s actual support than a phone poll, which requires no real effort on behalf of the supporter.
To help with the official campaign, see the official website for details on what you can do.
The campaign also needs your money! Donate now!
There are other ways you can help as well:
See Jive Dadson's video for a good overview of where to begin and what to do.
You can also Adopt an Iowan - this means you donate $35 - or whatever you can - to pay for an Iowan to vote in the poll. Only Iowa residents can vote, and it costs $35!
You can also donate to get radio and newspaper ads on the air in Iowa. Click here for more info.
If you're going to Iowa, read Kevin's excellent post on out of state volunteer info.. And if you go, be sure to write so that all of us sitting around at home can share in the excitement!
If I've left anything out (of course I have!) , please let the rest of us know in the comments below.
Go Ron Paul!

google search
I just noticed something kinda neat: try searching for "Iowa straw poll" on google, and notice the first result given.
David and Goliath
Apparently Mitt has done everything possible to buy the straw poll. Against such a backdrop, a great Ron Paul showing would mean a great deal.

Mitt has nothing to worry about
With the Story County Elections Commissioner, Mary Mosiman, officially working on Mitt Romney's Iowa team why would he worry about who is going to come in first.
Mary Mosiman is in charge of providing the blackbox voting machines and as Elections Commissioner, I would think she would have some involvement in the counting.
Now could this GOP Straw Poll be anymore blatant? Just asking.
IOWA STRAW POLL
I'm a Demcrat who believes that the country needs two parties dedicted to the good of the people to prosper and survive and that the domination of the GOP by the neocons and religious right has turned it into a party that caters to special interests and dogma and not the good of the people.
I can see the importance of Ron Paul's candidacy and the need to at least send a message to the Republican Party. I would be willing to travel from DM to Ames to vote for him but I am retired and can't get myself to give the GOP $35 to help run their diversive candidates in local Iowa races. Any way of getting a ticket to help the cause, a cause I might add that I would have supported actively when I was in college?

Thanks for voting for Ron!
We Can Pray
We can pray that everyone who lives in Iowa, and who is unhappy that the neo-cons have taken over the GOP, will go to the Straw Poll and vote for Ron Paul.
We can pray that democrats, independents, libertarians, constitutionalists, green party members, reform party members, etc. will go to the Straw Poll and vote for Ron Paul.
The battle is now!

Why does the Iowa Straw Poll Logo feature an ear of corn? Wouldn't a hay bale make more sense?
Drain the swamp!
Ron Paul excluded from televised debates in Iowa
According to Jon C. Ryter, Ron Paul has been excluded from televised debates with the other GOP candidates in Iowa because he wears an aluminium foil hat. Is this true? Who do we call to complain? See article Republicans....Not Pleased With Their Options:
http://www.newswithviews.com/Ryter/jon184.htm
This article has inaccuracies in it so prepare yourself before reading it.
When you can't beat someone
When you can't beat someone on an honest and fair playing field, you start calling them names and exclude them from the game.
How many times have we seen this happen? The Iowa GOP is no different. They have never wanted Ron Paul in there state to begin with.
We are now seeing firsthand how so called democracy works it this country.
He and all those who voted for him should meet all at one time and then start counting heads.
That would give a more accurate and fair count of all those who voted for Ron Paul then he will ever get from the Iowa GOP.
And it would be a great visual for not only the Iowa GOP, but the nation and the MSM as well.
He beat them at their own game when he was excluded from their little get together a few weeks back and I have no doubt he can do it again.
It's called "blowback."
Ryter is the one who needs his head examined
I've been seeing his name now and again for years. At least I now know I made the right choice to never pay him any attention.
This campaign sure is smoking out the faux patriots! :-)

Nit-Wits
Alan~have been meaning to thank you for some good article posts you've made. (National Review, Fair). My usual "financial" reading has been put on the back burner lately, so missed the Telegraph articles. Paulson is trying to tone-down those nit-wits in DC; he was here in Billings yesterday trying to pacify Herr Max Baucus~even Paulson is terrified of these idiots. Can you imagine, from China to Billings? C'mon! Michael has another article up tonight (morn?) talking about the Fed, inflate/deflate, etc. First, I'm shocked so many people don't know what the Fed. Res./Central Bank is; second, doesn't anyone READ history anymore? Yes, this is what "they" have ALWAYS done: inflate, then deflate. POP. It's how they take everything we've got. Wake up PEOPLE. DEPRESSION: trade wars, tarrifs, wild markets, huge debt, complacency, etc, etc. It's all manipulation. This is Ron Paul's message; he is trying to wake us up~save us from this most preventable, tragic repeat of history. Sure, they dumb us down, feed us propaganda, their schools don't teach us to think~but our founders, and good men/women since, gave us tools to use (and many died from doing so). And we have each other.I am truly frightened by what I see happening in this country; but, by god, they aren't going to take everything my dear loved ones worked all of their good and decent lives for without one helluva fight out of me.The Coming Battle is here! Go Ron Paul Go!
We know and they're learning!
http://uspolitics.einnews.com/article.php?nid=317829
FreedomRings~Thank you by the way. I love Daily Paul, I think it's a great resource and I'm happy to contribute to the conversation. Also, I completely feel you on feeling threatened. So many people have asked me why I even care or just look at me blankly - many people have been conditioned to just take it - I can't do that. I won't lay down when I'm being kicked, I want to do something about it. And as more bubbles burst people will begin to realize that it's not just about Iraq, but that there are many intertwined issues that need to be resolved. We cannot keep having our politicians and our media trying to convince us we live in the greatest nation, we have to make that statement true again. It is our duty to get this man in office. We owe it to ourselves, our countrymen, and the ideals that make America the grandest experiment.

I'm waiting to see how they'll try to paint THIS one as our fault in the news media...
Hopefully, it's so logically-impossible, they'll give-up before they try. :) Good luck to our Iowa friends -- especially considering the Diebold machines. For a humorous look at the situation: http://avirubin.com/vote/dailyshow.mov from a while ago still applies.

Voting machine solution!
all of these voting machines have very delicate lcd touch screens right, get my drift yet. any one every broke a lap top screen? walk into the straw poll before the vote and brake as many machines as you can, youll be arrested and probly go to jail but.

Not a solution
Violating private property rights is both unethical and against the very basis of this campaign. Alternatively, I'd like to suggest an organized attempt to collect signed statements that people voted for Ron Paul from those willing to give them - it would give a minimum, which, if the total came out under, would be proof of foul play.
This could be defeated by ballot stuffing, but as a fund raising event, with a public ticket price, there wouldn't be too much leeway there, since the take would be subject to scrutiny, and any disagreement between it and vote count looked into.
I KNOW
I was only joking, im sorry.

All the comments about how Ron Paul could win the election and all the support and all the effort and all the banners and all the signs and all the forums and all the contributions and all the meetup groups and all the volunteers and all the media ideas and all the work and all the effort and all the thousands of people at rallys and all the Internet support and all the forums and all the excitement and all the hopefulness and all the...etc. etc. etc.
DON"T MEAN SQUAT!!!
If the voting machines are rigged by the elite GOP powers (which they are) then "all the this and all the that" means NOTHING. Even if Dr. Paul walked on water HE WILL LOSE ! ! ! END OF STORY ! ! !
At which point perhaps it would be time for a NEW type of revoloution ! ! !
Anyone got a Guillotine for George and Dick?
the answer to Diebold is simple
When everyone is voting for the same candidate, nobody's going to believe anybody else won. So your hysterics are misguided; we don't need less of all these things, we need MORE!!!

Can we Trust the Iowa Straw Poll Results?
Tuesday, 07 August 2007
While the Iowa Republican party Straw Poll will capture votes on the same type of electronic voting machine that were decertified in California on Friday of last week and found to be "flawed" in a Florida study , party officials have stated that they have no plans to manually count the ballots.
"It is very concerning that there will be no checks and balances into the accuracy of this election," said a Ron Paul Meetup representative.
A recent "Red Team" report from the University of California found serious security vulnerabilities within the Optical Scan election system manufactured by Diebold, which is the same system to be used in the Iowa Straw Poll. The team's findings included:
I. The ability to "alter vote totals in order to change the vote results on the optical scan unit."
II. Two different means for gaining unauthorized access to the [GEMS] server that collects and tallies all of the votes collected from the optical scan units used on Election Day. This included "a remotely-accessible Windows account that can be accessed without the need to supply a password," allowing an outsider to log-in to the server.
III. The team was then able to use this unauthorized "access on the server to manipulate and corrupt GEMS databases [i.e. election results]."
All of the voting systems studied contained serious design flaws that have led directly to specific vulnerabilities, which attackers could exploit to affect election outcomes," California Secretary of State Bowen said.

Gallup and US Today poll
I am from Slovakia and I support Ron Paul.
In the newspaper www.sme.sk is today a text about GOP candidates and todays Gallup and US Today poll. There is nothing about Ron Paul, only Rudy Giuliani 33 percent, Fred Thompson 21 percent, John McCain 16 percen, Mitt Romney 8 percent.
Is here somebody, who can explain it for me?
Apparently...
In media-bias land, 33+21+16+8=100! Does that explain it? ;)
At least we get to make fun of them.

VP
There is no way that he should choose Murtha. There is only one person that comes close to being qualified to be Dr. Paul's VP. That person is Allen Keyes. If you don't know who he is, look up his videos on Youtube.
It's Alan, not Allen
I wouldn't be so dogmatic there, Will. There are reasons to doubt whether Alan would be the ideal VP choice. I volunteered some time to his 2000 campaign, so I'm no hater; fact is the guy isn't perfect. He's a good speaker and many times persuasive when people listen to him, but he also has done some stuff I can't get my brain around, like stumping for Orrin Hatch (ugh!) and losing badly to Obama for the Senate in Illinois as a carpetbagger.
Overall, there are worse choices, but there are better ones IMO.

What is begun in anger, ends in shame.
Can't blame him..
I spent a bit of time in Chicago during the campaign that he lost to Obama. You can't really blame that on him. He was up against some BIG odds. He was a relief pitcher that came into the game LATE. Not only that - the dems kept telling people that he wasn't even from Ill (he wasn't) and that he was an Uncle Tom. He simply couldn't win that particluar election.
Of course, I can only judge him by what I've heard him say. I really like him any time that I listen to him speak. He seems to explain all of MY stances (even though I'm not religious).
As for the spelling of his name: I got it wrong - shoot me...
no idea on frontrunner for VP
Something tells me Ron will have his own thoughts on it and they'll be good ones. ;-) So, I'm not too concerned on that front. It is fun to speculate though, isn't it?

you mean John Murtha?
Well he'd be great, for a 73-year-old Democrat who says "Social Security is one of the most important and most successful programs ever created by the federal government." Of course, when running a 72-year-old who says "Government exists to protect liberty, not to redistribute wealth or to grant special privileges." for the GOP nomination, that might not be the ideal VP choice.
Yeah, this is a groundbreaking campaign, and some things may be different than in other campaigns, but we do still need to think strategically. One of the biggest hurdles to put in front of GOP primary voters would be a Democrat on the ticket. I can't see Ron doing that, even assuming one could be found who shared his small-government views (and there are a few of those around, if you look far enough). *MAYBE* a Libertarian, but even that would be a stretch. It sucks, but people are herd thinkers, and we have to remember that it'll be a real battle to get the full message out to *everybody* in this primary. So, we need to think about making the ticket pass muster to those primary voters who don't know very much.
I just talked today with a Republican friend who attended a GOP meeting in her area recently. She said to me that when she asked about Ron Paul, they told her he'd accused America of causing 9/11. I straightened her out on that and she's back on board, but that's the kind of thing we don't need to ADD TO by doing anti-Republican stuff like putting a Democrat on the ticket.
Sorry. Maybe next time. ;-)

Jack is my Congressman
I have supported in him some elections (like the last one) and opposed him in others. He has been great at getting pork delivered to our district which makes him very popular here and his staff is top notch in helping his constituents. When I spoke with him last fall he told me he knew his vote for the war was a mistake a week after he cast it. At least he was man enough to admit his error.
After saying all of that, I say no to Jack as VP. I'd say maybe to Jesse Ventura but I'm sure Ron will find a worthy running mate.
yes go take the bus
if they are willing to steal this country in front of our faces why not, i mean think about if we lose the overall fight for america and everything goes to hell in a hand basket, im sure you and your family will be forced to steal food or maybe even kill to protect your family, think about that, so in that regards stealing a bus ticket is the lesser of two weveals

Should a Ron Paul Supporter take Mitt’s Free Expenses to Ames?
Here is an intersting thought:
http://ronpaulpledge.com/...
I'd do it in a heartbeat
If I lived in Iowa I'd take Mitt's free lunch then vote for Ron. There is nothing illegal about it at all. This is nothing but a fundraiser for the Iowa GOP, let's not forget that. Ron campaign has purchased 500 tickets for his supporters, by the way. And knowing that I'd still take one from Mitt and vote for Ron.
Pat Buchanan Slams Ron Paul
Pat Buchanan just said, on Morning Joe, that Ron Paul told his supporters to ride on Romney's buses and take Romney's tickets and then vote for Ron Paul. Does Pat Buchanan read Daily Paul? Is this something that Ron Paul would actually say?
In Ron's own words
Ron can't be held responsible for the actions of his supporters... I personally think this is a great idea!!! (Especially for those young college kids that can't afford it)
If Romney objects...
If Romney objects, then he must feel that he has a right to purchase votes. That's illegal. If I were in Iowa, I would DEFINITELY take Romney up on the offer and then vote for Ron Paul. Then I would thank Romney for leveling the playing field by taking big money out of the contest.
Not that I disagree with your sentiment...
..but is it actually illegal in a straw poll? I know in a government run election it is, but this would seem to be outside of those rules, to me.
Thanks Pat!
Thanks Pat for a great, fair idea!
I just sent another donation.
I hope they use it all in Iowa, but whatever they do is alright with me. I wish I could help out with the phone calls, but I really hate it when others call me and I'm scared my own calls to others would too-easily reflect that, to the detriment of Dr. Paul's chances at that particular Iowan's vote. Anyway, yesterday's sign waving was a success, people honked and waved and took literature, even from me (I'm not too good at that, either!). Keep in mind, we rule the meetups and the 'net generally, and that's our ace in the hole over the next 2 weeks! No other candidate has anyone who cares enough to do anything without being paid for it.
I heard a really good idea yesterday -- attend other local meetups and see what they're like, and invite the members there to YOUR next meetup!

You should have waited on your donation and I should have saved my time mailing 100 letters to Iowans because Chris Wallace announced, at the end of Fox News Sunday, that Mitt Romney is the PRESUMED winner and they will be there to cover it.

Kent Snyder, Ron Paul's campaign chair, will be my guest on the Downsize DC Conference Call today (Sunday).
The occasion? Well, there are two things.
First, the Iowa straw poll is coming up in just under two weeks. What are the campaign plans? ...expectations?
Second, an online writer speculated that Congressman Ron Paul's presidential campaign was provoked by a call from Karl Rove who wanted the Congressman to run in order to undermine the Libertarian Party.
Now, it should be noted that the online writer suggested a day or two later that his column was designed to make another point -- namely that conspiracy theories are stupid. But he's written about the Paul campaign at other times and suggested that it was a net negative for libertarian causes, so it wasn't immediately obvious to all of his readers that he was kidding or making some other point.
And it appears, that for some, it's still not obvious. And this writer is not alone in publishing this kind of opinion. Is Ron Paul hurting or helping the cause? And just how did this campaign start?
We'll ask the man who was there at the genesis of the Paul campaign, Kent Snyder, these questions, as well as yours . . .
If you call 1-800-259-9231. Preference will be given to callers, but you can also email me at -- CALL at DOWNSIZEDC dot org.
This show, which is sponsored by DownsizeDC.org and Gun Owners of America, broadcasts live at 4:06 PM Eastern (3:06 PM Central, 2:06 PM Mountain, and 1:06 PM Pacific).
It's on a few small market stations. However, the best way to listen is online at http://www.GCNLive.com/listenlive.htm
If you listen, you'll hear questions that won't be asked anywhere else. You'll learn something new. I hope you'll join us!

Thank you everyone!
Thank you all for your support. My apologies to everyone who has written me emails, and written me comments that I have not responded to. It is not that I don't want to, of course! It is everything I can do to keep my job and this site together.
I just got back from a meetup in Harvard Square, Republic of Cambridge. One of the members of the Boston meetup group organized a public showing of Ron Paul DVDs! He bought a huge screen, and hooked up a projector and a laptop to a quiet portable generator, and we had a movie showing right there in Harvard Square. It was great! Lots of people stopped to watch, and we handed out lots of brochures & literature. Very interesting and exciting to get out to meet the people.
Please everyone, do what you can. This is our big chance to take the country back. Please do what you can: call, write letters, send money, adopt an Iowan. Who knows how far your influence might extend? As I've said before - it is not often that you get a chance to participate in a real, live revolution. And a not a bloody one - big bonus!
Thank you all.

The Tonight Show idea is great!
I emailed them as soon as I saw that idea. If we keep emailing them, well I would say it would be tough not to invite Dr. Paul on the show. As long as we are not too pushy and request with a please.
I also heard of a Straw Poll in Ft. Worth, Texas on Labor Day Weekend. Not sure that is correct but that could be a HUGE crowd!
Lot's of upset people down here. We need a Constitutional change.
Iowa Dispatch: Dedicated to Dr. Paul
I just spoke with Jen in Iowa, a few minutes ago. The Iowa DVD distribution is going wonderfully. And I must say, I was blown away when she told me that some of the out-of-state volunteers came from as far away as Tennessee and North Carolina just for the day to help distribute DVDs.
That is awesome! That is dedication, and passion. I am seeing more and more of it at every event, every meetup, and every rally across the country.
Freedom is popular, and it's popularity is gaining momentum.
Jen will have the day's recap posted on her blog later this evening... they are still distributing as I write this.

I finally registered to this site been coming here for the last couple months. Great job and thank you for being another continued source for us to hear more about Ron Paul.
I think it's becoming more evident every day how powerful Ron Pauls message is take for example all the songs people are writing about Ron Paul like the new cheesy Ron Paul song featured on Ron Pauls You Tube page. When was the last time Bush or Clinton had a song written about them?
Iowa is going to be won I have confidence in the good people of Iowa and the surrounding areas you can do it!

Just finished sending out 100 letters to Iowans about the straw poll from the address list I got from the RP campaign, also added a slim jim to each letter.

Like a snowball rolling down the side of a snow-covered hill:
It's growing. - Smokey Robinson
That has been Ron Paul's campaign history: it's growing, and gathering momentum every day.
I was mightily impressed with the Ames event on June 30th and how the thunder was stolen from the Iowans for Tax Relief; everybody--especially the Iowans--came through big time. The media noticed; Ed Failor quit the McCain campaign and the snowball gained more momentum.
I have every confidence the Iowans will do it again, and that Dr. Paul will do well in the Straw Poll in a few days. Even if he doesn't I won't be concerned; he is getting more and more light these days and that is a wonderful sign: the message is getting out and attracting more people. The revolution is alive, well and quite healthy. It can only continue to grow, no matter what the Iowa results may be.
But I sure hope he wins.
We Can Win!
Thank you, Michael, for all your great work. I would like to add, rather quickly, that this straw poll could be the deciding factor in whether we have a fighting chance or whether we lose.
Dr. Paul is depending upon us. Are we going to sit back and let others shoulder all the hard work? Think about it.
How many of you have joined the Call Iowa Program? How many of you have sent out letters to the Mail Iowa Program? How many of you have adopted an Iowan? Do what you can. You can’t do everything, but you can do something. Find what you can do.
On the forums there’s a man putting together a radio ad and a newspaper ad. He’s taking the initiative. Other people are pacing around, staying up late every night, brainstorming. They’re trying to come up with creative ideas to help win the Iowa straw poll. They are living, breathing, and dreaming Iowa.
Just as Van Gogh LIVED to be a painter, striking the canvas with his brush with an intensity that few can imagine, so can we rally ourselves, search deep within our souls for that creative drive and harness it.
If for only once in our brief lives can we seize the day and go for it. The Patriots in the American Revolution risked much more. They spilled their blood for our freedom.
Well, I for one don’t want to wait around and see how far the Washington Elite are willing to go with their hunger for power and control. I don’t want to wake up in a few years from now and accept the idea of being ‘chipped.’
Let the Iowa straw poll be our canvas and the grass roots be our brush. Here’s my opportunity to support a man whom the Founding Fathers would cherish as a brother. His name is Ron Paul.
Long live the Ron Paul revolutionaries!
Viva the Creative Paulian Revolutionaries!
Passionately said, Blofeld!
And, a testimony to the creativity of the people that Ron Paul has attracted to the Freedom movement! You folks are fantastic!
YES...WE CAN WIN...
If it is going to be....it is up to WE!!!
