I remember this from

I remember this from college. (We didn't do the experiment it was only explained) In my class the professor told about the interviews with the people that were inflicting the pain. The question was why did you keep going, why did you stop where you did, etc. Our professor talked about the different levels that people were on. For example some said they kept inflicting the pain because they had signed a contract. There were some though that would not go beyond the first couple of shocks. If I remember correctly there were 5 levels that mankind is on. In other words people on level one had love and empathy for mankind (something close to what Jesus has). I can not remember the other levels. I wish I kept my notes. Very interesting though. I have thought of that many times since college (thirty years) and often wondered what level I would have been on.

I think Voltaire has something to contribute here:

"Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities." - Voltaire

Yeah, this is why I too am pretty much done here--here being the States--not that I expect to find any other place that's perfect, but there's got to be a place that's less incongruent...The disconnect between how the majority of "Americans" see themselves and what they really are--that's becoming too much for me to bear.

This is very interesting ,

Also sort of explains why soldiers find that it is okay to go kill people who have never done anything to deserve it . They can absolve themselves of any responsibility by "following orders".

Murder is Murder anyway you slice it.
torture is torture.
Malice is Malice no matter who commands it.

most people suck

I remember this experiment we did in a college psychology course. Generally normal people were of the impression that they were giving subjects electrical shocks- they had "control" over the voltage. There was actually no electricity flowing- but they thought there was- and the louder the yelps of pain got, the more frequent and higher the voltage the test subjects would shock the actors...over incorrect answers to standard tests. We used everyone from young boys to middle aged housewives and sweet little old ladies. As I recall, something like 78% (I remember it was close to 80% ) of the people involved became sadistic. Imagine what people are capable of if they think their cause is "just". We had a huddle afterward and discussed our findings. "What have we learned?" asked our instructor. One girl spoke up "That most people suck?".

I always like to talk about "checks and balances".

I don't find atrocities hard to fathom. On the contrary, I find it amazing that atrocities don't happen more often.

As a simple "thought experiment", imagine what would happen if no-one resisted me, no-one held me accountable and everyone obeyed me.

Can you imagine what a horrible monster I would become?

Two rules that people can be relied upon to break.

1. Don't initiate force.
2. Don't steal.

How about

Don't tell a lie?

Three rules.

Yes this is so true. I had not seen this one but I did see the latter one.

It is already happening now though by the people ho enforce the theft of property and the fruits of our labor. And they don't even think twice abut what they are doing to thier fellow man.
